The creature was very much preoccupied with the lion, twisting it's arm to try and free it from the jaws of the creature. Stretched like this, twisting and turning it would seem the middle was the best way to aim. It is hard to tell if there are areas that are more vulnerable on a creature that is sand and sea water but what passes for a torso is at least a large target.

The foot swings out again, this time in a sweeping kick, to try and push anyone still in it's vicinity backwards, preferably into the sea itself.
