"I see." He could understand how something like losing one's mother would stay with someone, being someone who had lost his mother at a young age and had continued to go to her cottage to wait for her for months after she had gone. He still visited the cottage on occasion even though he now understood what her being gone had meant. And he had lost the person he had loved for so long. "It is good that he was understanding of that."
