They couldn't sit around doing nothing. Doing that would have hurt them more than being run through with a sword or shot in the heart. It was a wound that would run deeper than any an enemy could deliver.
"You also... forget. I'm the servant. Madoka is my Eve... I do what she asks." He could suggest she not fight, but in the end if she wanted to, he couldn't make her do otherwise. "... But I can promise to keep her as safe as I can."
