"A lion is kind of like a panther. It's also a very, very big cat, but the difference is that a lion has a mane! So it has lots of hair around its head. I don't think any of them live near the sea." So that'd be an explanation for Tidus never having heard of them, even if they do exist somewhere out there in his world.
