"Mm," Gen hummed in understanding. "I think a little flair wouldn't make you too great a target. Certainly I'd hold back from wearing a jeweled tunic or a sash with gold threads to go with that - but there's a danger in seeming too poor as well. We're strangers in the town, we won't want to look like thieves or vagabonds."

Gen tilted his head, considering the question. "Ah, perhaps some people did, once? I remember reading about people who would dress up like this for fun when I was a teenager. It seemed like a good time, though I never did. During the point of time when I'd been taken, people's usual modes of dress could be described as more ... well ... primitive."
