As with all plans that were only thought through halfway, it doesn't all go according to expectations. Although the laser does indeed hit its mark, it fails to the task of actually killing the mark. When the light settles and the smoke from his gun wisps into the air, Roland is for a moment, convinced that the threat to their adventure to destroy blighted rats is now well and truly gone. Though it may not be the last time they encounter cockroaches down in a sewer, the worst of it, he believes, might have been their congregation right in front of them.

This false sense of security is his first and final mistake. The dust clears to a nightmare as every one of the dozen cockroaches have dispersed, some flying in the air, the others just about to take flight themselves as they flutter to adjacent walls for safety. Roland's time slows for him, and he is left with no choice but to -

"Run, run now!"

His gun disappears into his Arms Band in a split second and he immediately jerks Inigo's closest hand to follow him as fast as possible, out of that section of the sewer, and into the opposite direction.
