.. Tidus's question feels a little hard to answer, mostly since the answer is so wrapped up in the fact that there wasn't much of a kingdom left by the time he was old enough to even remotely get close to an age where he could be treated with respect.

And that's definitely something he doesn't want to drag the mood down with right now. So he instead focuses on the other thing Tidus says, which just makes him laugh. Especially with that tone.
