That answer invites still more questions, and Ran's eyebrows knit, watching the woman tear her shirt and wrap Ran's wound. When would she have smiled at Vermouth? The only time she can remember seeing her is that time before with Ai; she certainly wouldn't have smiled then. She's smiled at her on the train, of course, but that can't count; this sentiment was in play well before they were on this train. Something about the way that Vermouth says it, too, gives Ran the feeling that it was some time ago.
Ran's memory for faces is excellent. She rarely forgets. And more than that, Vermouth, particularly in the homogenous country of Japan, couldn't possibly help but to stand out.
