[ How come Tidus decides to try and get rid of the awkward with jokes, only to make the one joke that could actually make the awkward worse? Mostly since the joke doesn't flow as naturally from their line of conversation for Inigo as it does for Tidus, considering the entirely different things they imagined were on the line here.

So Inigo's eyes widen, his gaze finally turning towards Tidus. Whereas Inigo made sure to cover everything else with a layer of laughs, of downplaying everything, he isn't in time to do that now. There's clear pain in his eyes - and almost a hint of something like betrayal.

If this were anyone else, Inigo would have made sure to get the hell out of this conversation. But thankfully he has at least learned that walking away from a conversation with Tidus is just bound to not end well. So he'll try to use his words - even though it's hard, even though it hurts. ]
