( He has to ask respectfully; Wen Ning is a senior, and one he respects, as he should—the man's a martial genius, whatever his other complications of soul, and he's Lan Sizhui's family, from his birth parents.

He leads the young woman into the light, and across the river, having to practically carry her as she drags her feet then clings tighter, sobbing, saying it's too much, too
much, it needs to end.

It does, once he practically pries her fingers off his arm and nudges her through the far side, where she goes willingly, once the fear lets her breath even a little more. Back to the river's start with him, and he breathes in himself, before looking out, for the next person.
