Ryu knows self destructing enemies. He flaps and darts away from the bird with a fair amount of speed. He can probably take a hit, but he doesn't want to in this condition. That seems more than a little unwise.

As he flies, he looks for anyone who might not be able to be clear of the blast and attempts to scoop them up and drag them back.
