The talking without having to use his mouth trick is yet another thing this kirin has in common with Jethro. (Though Jethro sometimes does it anyway, to show off his terrifying needle teeth.)

So... Tannusen isn't startled, at least. Mildly frustrated that he can't also do that trick, but not startled. But he understands words, at least, and actually shakes his head very deliberately.

Wrong vocal chords, and no magic mind-speak. His many talents in this form aren't in communication.
