It's not like they were staying on this planet, so why should he bother to study it's environment? "It seems closer to icing than snow as it accumulates... maybe it's just so cold here it's changing it's structural state before it lands, considering it's in darkness for such a long time." That last part is mostly for himself, trying to puzzle it out.
