The Waking of Neran: Comms

Talk to All

Talk to Team

Talk to Individual

For the third option, a list of passengers appears and names can be searched for by letter. Anyone who has been working to try and make communications happen on their own devices will find those linked in to this network- though it is still only possible to use voice. If they have headphones from the music room they can make it so they work like earpieces.

Day Two, relatively early

[personal profile] fivemilesdeep 2021-12-16 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[These days are long and he's had enough food-related mishaps already to turn to the rest of the team for help.]

Does anyone know how to tell which food is spicy before you try it?

[A beat, as he thinks this over.]

Without asking, I mean.

[personal profile] monkeyinthewrench 2021-12-16 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends on what the food is. I know for Earth foods, they usually have some kind of red or black seasoning on them. Chili powder, paprika, pepper. 'Course, then there's jalapeƱo, that's green.

But the easiest way is to bug a friend to take a bite first. And if you get too close to it cooking and it starts to burn your eyes or throat, that's a sign too. Trust me, there's concentrated spice so powerful that if you let it evaporate, it'll literally burn you.
fivemilesdeep: (But if we try this)

[personal profile] fivemilesdeep 2021-12-16 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I meant the foods here. And if I have someone else try them, either they like spicy foods and I can't trust their judgment, or they don't and I've asked them to eat something painful so I don't have to.

[Please, please tell him Jake can see the problem with that situation. Please.]

[As for the fun fact:]

Do I want to know how you know that?
monkeyinthewrench: (the evidence)

[personal profile] monkeyinthewrench 2021-12-16 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
...yeah, that's a tough one. Seems like almost everything has some level of spice here. I deal with it by trying to find the milk substitute.

[ And oh boy, story time! ]

So as you know, spice that's concentrated enough can cause pain. Where I'm from, people who feel they're in danger but can't carry a gun carry pepper spray---basically, it's a liquid extract of the spiciest peppers, and when you spray it at someone, it blinds them for a while. Police officers have to get sprayed at the academy so they know what they're wielding and figure out how to work through the pain, and that was definitely not fun.

But joke's on them, 'cause I got sprayed before that! I got a super-spicy lollipop in high school, and my friends and I thought we'd microwave it to make a sauce, right?

Well, we forgot that heated liquid becomes gas. So we gassed the whole apartment and our moms found us pouring milk on our eyeballs and crying for mercy. Think we might've gotten a few things backwards there.
fivemilesdeep: (But if we try this)

[personal profile] fivemilesdeep 2021-12-16 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Fair enough.

[That's been Ryo's strategy so far too; it's not great, but it's functional, and sometimes that's all anyone can ask.]

[There's definitely a pause after the story, partially to commit the idea of pepper spray to memory (Ryo no) and partially because...well, that sure is a story, isn't it.]

And you only did that once, right?

[It's...rude, honestly. It's also in line with the kind of person he knows Jake to be so far, and repeated injuries caused by not learning from one's mistakes is a known and understood problem amongst healers.]
monkeyinthewrench: (spy work)

[personal profile] monkeyinthewrench 2021-12-16 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. That happens once and you don't forget. My eyeballs still hurt thinking about it.

People from other worlds visit here all the time right? And every food culture has a different spice tolerance. I'm sure they've heard the question before, you won't offend them by asking if that's what you're worried about.

I'm not worried about offending them - I just don't think I can trust anyone's judgment on what counts as spicy if they already like spicy foods.

[ Completely serious. ]

Have someone else eat it first.

[Okay, he kind of expected the "throw your friend under the caravan" response from Jake, but Thanatos?]

Are you volunteering?

You already know that I do not need to eat and usually refuse food.

[ So no. ]

Sounds like that makes you the perfect volunteer.

If that is what it sounds like, then your SCA isn't translating correctly.

Sounds like the obvious solution has been mentioned already.

[Masumi too on the 'make your friends try it' thing?]

If it helps though, I'd be willing to try whatever it is and say if it's spicy. That way you don't have to force someone else to do it.
fivemilesdeep: (Default)

[personal profile] fivemilesdeep 2021-12-16 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
...thank you for volunteering yourself instead of someone else. I might take you up on that.

[Thank you, Masumi, for clearing that bar. He knew he liked you.]
tactlesstantei: (small smile)

[personal profile] tactlesstantei 2021-12-17 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Alright, just let me know if you need me to try something. I figure it's better if you have someone willing to voluntarily try things, especially since you don't want to make someone else do it.
fivemilesdeep: (A good idea)

[personal profile] fivemilesdeep 2021-12-17 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
It is - I'd rather not put anyone in a situation they don't want to be in.

Have you found anything that isn't spicy? I should probably start keeping a list.
bakegarasu: (can you feel the sunshine?)

[personal profile] bakegarasu 2021-12-16 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I can try it first.

I can't feel pain, but I know what spicy flavors are like.
fivemilesdeep: (A good idea)

[personal profile] fivemilesdeep 2021-12-16 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
...oh!

[It's a bit surprised - he honestly hadn't considered asking Otoha, but "making your friends feel pain" isn't really a concern for a friend who can't feel pain, is it.]

I hadn't thought of that, but...yeah, I might ask you to help.
bakegarasu: (who's that rapping at my chamber door?)

[personal profile] bakegarasu 2021-12-17 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
No problem. I mean, we're here so we might as well enjoy the food, right?

... I've also won more than a few bets with people based on my 'spice tolerance'.
fivemilesdeep: (A good idea)

[personal profile] fivemilesdeep 2021-12-17 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Right. [Otoha can probably hear his smile.]

...here? [Did. Did you hurt yourself. Please say no.]
bakegarasu: (quietly listening)

No, no. Mostly in high school.

The smell will frequently tell you if it has any truly significant heat. If you haven't the stomach for it at all, however, you may well have to ask regardless of your preference not to.
fivemilesdeep: (Default)

[personal profile] fivemilesdeep 2021-12-17 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'm trying not to ask because people who make spicy food generally eat spicy food, and people who eat a lot of spicy food don't really have a good measure for whether something is spicy or not.

...the smell is a good idea, though.
faithburned: (It bears consideration.)

[personal profile] faithburned 2021-12-17 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
If you're trying to avoid spice altogether, than any chef who has any business at all working commercially will know what ingredients lend heat to their food. If what you're looking for is something mild, however, you will have a more difficult time.
fivemilesdeep: (Default)

[personal profile] fivemilesdeep 2021-12-19 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
...you know, I didn't think of that. Thank you.
