The Waking of Neran: Comms
Talk to All

For the third option, a list of passengers appears and names can be searched for by letter. Anyone who has been working to try and make communications happen on their own devices will find those linked in to this network- though it is still only possible to use voice. If they have headphones from the music room they can make it so they work like earpieces.

Day Two, relatively early
Does anyone know how to tell which food is spicy before you try it?
[A beat, as he thinks this over.]
Without asking, I mean.

But the easiest way is to bug a friend to take a bite first. And if you get too close to it cooking and it starts to burn your eyes or throat, that's a sign too. Trust me, there's concentrated spice so powerful that if you let it evaporate, it'll literally burn you.

[Please, please tell him Jake can see the problem with that situation. Please.]
[As for the fun fact:]
Do I want to know how you know that?

[ And oh boy, story time! ]
So as you know, spice that's concentrated enough can cause pain. Where I'm from, people who feel they're in danger but can't carry a gun carry pepper spray---basically, it's a liquid extract of the spiciest peppers, and when you spray it at someone, it blinds them for a while. Police officers have to get sprayed at the academy so they know what they're wielding and figure out how to work through the pain, and that was definitely not fun.
But joke's on them, 'cause I got sprayed before that! I got a super-spicy lollipop in high school, and my friends and I thought we'd microwave it to make a sauce, right?
Well, we forgot that heated liquid becomes gas. So we gassed the whole apartment and our moms found us pouring milk on our eyeballs and crying for mercy. Think we might've gotten a few things backwards there.

[That's been Ryo's strategy so far too; it's not great, but it's functional, and sometimes that's all anyone can ask.]
[There's definitely a pause after the story, partially to commit the idea of pepper spray to memory (Ryo no) and partially because...well, that sure is a story, isn't it.]
And you only did that once, right?
[It's...rude, honestly. It's also in line with the kind of person he knows Jake to be so far, and repeated injuries caused by not learning from one's mistakes is a known and understood problem amongst healers.]

People from other worlds visit here all the time right? And every food culture has a different spice tolerance. I'm sure they've heard the question before, you won't offend them by asking if that's what you're worried about.

[Masumi too on the 'make your friends try it' thing?]
If it helps though, I'd be willing to try whatever it is and say if it's spicy. That way you don't have to force someone else to do it.

[Thank you, Masumi, for clearing that bar. He knew he liked you.]

Have you found anything that isn't spicy? I should probably start keeping a list.

I can't feel pain, but I know what spicy flavors are like.

[It's a bit surprised - he honestly hadn't considered asking Otoha, but "making your friends feel pain" isn't really a concern for a friend who can't feel pain, is it.]
I hadn't thought of that, but...yeah, I might ask you to help.

... I've also won more than a few bets with people based on my 'spice tolerance'.

...here? [Did. Did you hurt yourself. Please say no.]
