What he gets scared of is losing them, and he doesn't want to run his mouth and ruin this new little group of people he's collected for himself.

It's a tough thing to realize, but a necessary one. He loved his old team, still does in fact. But he's gathered this new group of people that have suffered through being parents in dangerous circumstances. That have fumbled and been too rough or made mistakes. That are just relatable to who he is now and not who he was then.
