Yondu's crew hadn't been worth trying to bond with. Yondu and Peter had their moments, but there was a significant difference in that T'Challa would call his Yondu for help easily, and Peter only would if he was at the absolute end of his rope. Still as reliable, but one was a regular resource, and one was the nuclear option of desperation.
