Yondu's done a couple of desperate missions here and there for the train. Not too many, but he always prefers to work with a team when he does, one that he has a good bead on their abilities. Like teleportation, spells to go unnoticed, or even well-practiced or trained stealth or quick combat (like he generally does).

If the guy can fight with a knife alone, he's also assuming that he's nimble and quick and hard to catch. And that's valuable to have around.
