He brings them to a place where they can look at the blob without being immediately spotted. But it's definitely wobbling forward with... purpose? Or at least alert for the possibility of something to act agressively at.

One of the advantages of these things seems to have been that it largely fixates on whatever it is targeted regardless of what attacks it. When that happens to be 'something else' it's easier to dispatch before it reaches the goal.
"Though how you describe it now. I wonder if it only prevents something from approaching. Can it be moved after activated? Perhaps instead of something stationary, attaching it to a branch that you could discard and run if it proves ineffective." After all the storms there should be plenty of debris laying around.
