"I lived by myself," Nell said. "And I, well, I wasn't around my family anymore and they and the church had been all I knew. So, after Leah and my husband died I was just alone. Didn't know just how alone till I started making friends here."

She smiled a little ruefully. "No doubt I was awkward in going about it."
