Which meant that someone needed to keep the searcher distracted until Rezo finished the more powerful spell. Zelgadis gambled that the invaders didn't know all that much about magic, so moved farther away from Rezo, loud enough for both Rezo and the beast to hear him, and threw up a basic light spell. Mostly harmless, but it could blind the creature without affecting Rezo, and made Zelgadis a larger target.

(He still wasn't used to thinking of himself as just as vulnerable as a typical human.)
