On day Ten of the month of Fiddlesticks the SCA's light up and a holographic screen appears.

It has three options.

Talk to All

Talk to Team

Talk to Individual

For the third option, a list of passengers appears and names can be searched for by letter. Anyone who has been working to try and make communications happen on their own devices will find those linked in to this network- though it is still only possible to use voice. The short distance radios in their helmets also automatically connect so they can use their SCA communicators without removing life saving equipment!

[ There's a sigh of relief she can't quite hold back when she hears that voice. ]

.. it's good to hear you. You're alright, aren't you?

I'm alright, being useless doesn't give you much room to be anything else.

[irrationally]

Sometimes being safe is more important than being useful.

[ But she gets it. If there's anything she understands, it's a feeling of helplessness. So after a moment of hesitation, it doesn't feel right to just leave it at that. ]

That.. just means that I am glad you are safe. But if you want, we could look into seeing if there is anything you can learn to be able to help out.

I... I suppose I should learn SOMETHING so I'm not- this is so silly. I shouldn't... I'm trying to learn to be useful for a place that kidnapped me.

It's not for this place. We don't own this da-- [ Oh god, can't curse in front of the little ones. Alice quickly bites her tongue. ] --this train anything.

See it as learning something for yourself. Or for the people around you, if there's anyone you want to help.

What should I even learn? What's the point of learning French or Latin when we go to worlds where they mayn't even have mouths to speak?

Why learn to sew when there's a spider who can...

I suppose cooking might be of use.

There are so many things you could learn. Sure, there may be someone who can sew already, but more helping hands would always be of use, don't you think? There's quite a lot of people on this train.

[ And honestly, who would people prefer to talk to - a spider or a cute girl? ]

But of course cooking could help. Or first aid. Really, there are infinite things you could do, Alice. [ She's trying really hard to keep her tone as gentle as possible, no matter how tired she is from all this dumb crab fighting. ] You just need to find what you like, and what suits you. And I know you're a formidable girl who can do as much.

[She blushed. She was being dramatic, she knew there was plenty she could do, but she's also seven, she's allowed to be dramatic.]

Well, I don't mind cooking so much... perhaps I could help in the greenhouse, help with all the flowers. I'm sure their flower beds have been so soft, they haven't woken up since being planted!

[irrationally]

Oh, they are. I've tried speaking to them plenty of times, but they never say anything back.

[ She may have had some more difficulty saying that out in the open, but since she's just talking to the other Alice now, the main person who would actually understand that without judging her, it comes out a lot easier. ]

I'm sure they're all fast asleep.

Hmm.... then, we'll fix their flower beds and they'll be sure to awaken!

[irrationally]

[ She smiles. It's good to hear the younger girl get more excited. ]

You'll have to tell me what they say once they wake up. I'm quite curious what kind of stories flowers grown in such a place could tell.

Do we bring back flowers from every place we visit?

[irrationally]

That's a good question. Perhaps some do?

[ Alice herself hasn't bothered, but there do seem to be quite a lot of flowers in the greenhouse.. ]

Have you seen any flowers here so far? You could bring them along. [ Especially if the younger girl wants to be helpful. It could give her something to do for the moment. ]

Just the ones in the greenhouse. I shall ask... on this... device. I'm still learning everything about it.
