Down the Staircase: Backdated to Day Seven

Those who were investigating the sigil or fighting crabs nearby would be aware of the ground rumbling as a spiral staircase opened into the dark sand below.

Of course it is less a staircase at the bottom of the ocean and more a terrifying water helter-skelter downwards through the dark.

But they land in an underground cave. It is dark, and ankle deep in water. In the centre there is a white marble plinth, with a large empty shell on top. The walls of the cave are dark and grimy but with the aid of the torches in their SCA's and some investigating will find a hint of colours underneath the sand and seaweed on the walls.

Between day seven and day ten

The crabs are still attacking. It is not a never ending siege but it pays to be vigilant as every so often crabs arrive to launch an attack on the sleeping citizens. Luckily they don't seem to be able to get into the underground chamber, perhaps being too large or unwilling to enter through the twisting passage.

Inside the cave the water is slowly rising, by day ten of the month of Fiddlesticks it reaches the average voidtrecker's chest.

The plinth is tall, above the voidtreckers' heads and so hasn't been submerged yet.

Assuming they have begun to clear the sand and seaweed off the walls of the cave a picture begins to emerge. Simple drawings, very similar to those on the tablets in the market place.

Day Ten

Light from the sky, an island. People gathered around a fire. Beacon. Symbols are helpfully translated for them. A plinth. No, two plinths with shells on them filled with light.

All very useful. If only they had any way to share their ideas with the others.

Which is when their SCA's glow and a holographic screen appears.

Meanwhile on the train...

By day ten the storm hits with a vengeance. Waves are high, rain falls practically sideways. The train holds out well, staying in place and upright through the battering seas. Going out to dive is nerve wracking and there might be some cases of seasickness in those remaining on the train.

It is all in all not a great sea faring experience.

Kaiba wonders about that. "I heard from the others that last month's frequency was unusual, but this is only month six as far as any of the current passengers know. Not enough to establish a clear pattern."

He looks out at the stormy seas. "But we're growing as a team. We should rotate active crew more effectively and give some rest. Plucking us out of our lives to do this with no training, no fitness evaluation, no proper support...it was ridiculous."

"It seems like enough to establish something. I've only been here...Three passenger pickups, if you include my own. But everyone seems to think that having an extra mission was really weird."

As for the rest, it is troubling. Pulling her knees in tighter to her chest, she frowns.

"And all these kids. Wait--how old are you?"

"18, but I've been legally considered an adult for 3 years," he answered quickly. He felt like he'd been an adult for even longer than that, but he didn't need to go into detail there.

"It bothers me. There's a girl who can't be any older than eight here. Why would the train need her?"

Okay who is going around making 15 year olds into adults. And why? She remembers herself at 15, an awkward teenager, unsure. Still--she stifles the impulse to radically question his world's decision and throws in her two cents on the much more unquestioning problem here.

"Exactly. Was she blonde? I met a young blonde girl when I was getting my suit and she wasn't--she's a child. She wasn't some protege, a warrior or a diplomat or something a train would need. She's just a little girl."

"Her name was Alice." Yes, same girl. "I gave her a stuffed bear. I thought she'd need it the most. She's worried and I don't know how to help her."

He's never been great with kids except his brother, despite willing to help...

"Oh, is that her name? We spoke in the dressing carriage. She didn't really know how to wear the suit. Apparently, she's used to dresses. I--I don't know that I was much more help but I did try."

Persephone smiles thinly and offers: "I'm sure it made her feel better. Things that like always made me feel better as a kid."

"Good to hear it," Kaiba smiled tiredly at her. "But we need to do more to help. That's going to be my new plan when this is over...something, to make this a little less frightening."

He reaches out the door to dip his hand in the churning waves. "Maybe if we listen long enough we can get some sleep."

"I know, I do know."

How do you comfort a child in a strange place with everything she knows taken away from her? Maybe some flowers are in order later. Or--something. She follows his movement to the water beyond them and grimaces.

"I wish I could. I'm not sure I can sleep until we get on solid ground."
