Under the Sea: Conclusion and aftermath

Ritual

The jellyfish is no more and as red team take stock of their injuries, or collapse from exhaustion the lights zip around them, singing their song of joy. They gather around the light that had been inside the jellyfish and now that it has been released it is obvious this light is different. Stronger. They surround it and the song gets even louder as they begin to move towards the plinth.

In the caverns where the purple and orange team are there is a stillness. For those in orange team still in the cavern they can only hope that the instructions they gave out had been followed. Luckily for them they have been, Purple team have done a remarkable job of defeating the crabs and cleaning the temple. The priests gather around the shell on the alter, arms linked together in prayer as they seek to re-sanctify their temple. As their prayer begins they will invite the voidtreckers to join them, though no one is forced into taking part in the ritual. They suggest that they use their strange wrist jewellery to open communication with their friends in Bui.

The monster on the beach is defeated and though the fight is still raging against the crabs, a beacon has been built and lit. The islanders who are not fighting gather around it, linking arms, drawing any voidtreckers who don't object to joining them into the circle.

The song begins hesitantly, almost as if everyone has forgotten the words and only half remembers the tune. The SCA translates, the prayer is simple, a blessing on the land and its people, deliverance from the darkness and hope for the future.

The light from the jellyfish reaches the plinth and is set upon it. The song heightens and the light shoots upwards, blinding in its brilliance.

Through the dark storm clouds a light streams towards the island, most of it towards the beacon on the island though there is a break away light that goes towards the train, where some of orange team have set up a second beacon. It swirls around those on the train roof, singing a song of happiness and bounces back towards the island.

The light reaches the main beacon and hits it with a strength that lights up the whole sky. The light splits more solidly into two and speeds off over the ocean. Light pours into the underground caverns, not caring about the ocean and rock in the way, the light pools into the shells, the caverns glow warmly.

Outside the storm calms, clouds roll back, the sun shines. The sea stills. The wind stops. The sun is rising, a beautiful dawn. Any monsters left scuttle away, vanishing into the ocean, away from Bui.

Those with any powers that they couldn't reach before find them returned in a rush. Those who can sense life find this world teeming with it. A song that dances between every plant and creature.

Some of red may have evacuated to the train but those who stayed to see the ritual through, the world around them seems to melt away and they find themselves back next to the rock pools. Among their number there are some confused looking islanders who intrinsically draw closer to those who helped free the lights.

Orange and Purple

Down underwater there's noise and a babble of voices as the citizens of Bui wake up. There's a shimmering around the city now, like a shield though they can pass through easily. Parents scramble to locate their children and all check on loved ones and friends.

The familiar voice of train announcements is heard through Orange team's SCAs. Orange return to the VoidTrecker Express. Once everyone is on board it flies low over the ocean, skimming the waves.

In the underwater temple the priests finish sealing the ritual and then it is time to begin the return trek. There are no monsters this time and after a few hours, as they emerge onto the first of the sandbanks they will find the VoidTrecker Express is waiting for them.

Red and Blue

The monsters gone, those of the island gather everyone from the rock pools and for a few hours everyone sleeps.

At about noon the islanders begin to stir, begin putting things to rights. Wood is moved from the strategic points to more communal campfires on the beach. Any dead monsters that haven't been gathered for food have been washed out to sea, disappeared into the depths. They begin to prepare food and won't turn away any helpers. Though those who have been fighting are encouraged to rest.

The islanders bring blankets and start to gather. Everyone is exhausted but the children, in the way of children find the energy to play in the sea and the sand.

Beach Day

Early afternoon the train lands on the beach and everyone gets a holographic message to their SCA.

Mission successful. Well done Voidtreckers. Enjoy the rest of your day. You will find suitable clothing in the dressing room. A new recipe has been added to the kitchen information points.

The dressing room is indeed open once more, this time it holds swimsuits of every style, shorts, t shirts, wraps and beach skirts. Sun hats and sunglasses can also be found. It's a bit of a mush mash but they should be able to cobble together something other than their uniform wet suits.

Time to laze around on the beach or for those who still have energy swim or play. A few hours later a ripple across the water brings some of those from Bui and they swim or lounge on rocks to talk.

Food and stories

Food is cooked and shared, the islanders will happily try the voidtreckers' offerings and share their own. As the sun begins to set they gather around the fires. Stories and songs are shared and there's even some dancing for the brave.

Voidtreckers can choose whether to sleep in their own beds or spend one last night on the island before the train flies off into the sunrise and into the void.

“A pleasure, Reno,” Joscelin replies dutifully, though without enthusiasm. He feels so awkward. The old him would have never accepted this kind of help. His pride simply would not have allowed it.

(But the old him also wouldn’t have collapsed from exhaustion.)

He’s briefly tempted to correct Reno about his true age, but that’s another awkward conversation, and it’s not as if it’s even strictly true anymore. So instead he just replies with: “I’ll be eleven in January.”

Which is true, for the first time in 670 years.

"No."

Or.. well, maybe there have been in a distant past. But Inigo never got to experience much of a childhood before things went to hell in a handbasket, so it's at least true that he's used to a world where no one played those kinds of games.

"I mean, if we wanted entertainment, we'd go play 'poke the wyvern' or something." Clearly a much more child-appropriate game! Totally not dangerous. He says it so casually too, although that might be blamed on the fact that he's also starting to relax now he's sitting here. "Although playing a ball game sure is better for these kids here."

Thankfully he seems much less scared now he's actually on top of the whale. Partially since Nita is just that good at reassuring him, but also since the water is the real problem here, honestly. Riding something across the water? Much less scary. Especially now he's sitting up there and realises it's stable enough that he won't just fall off into the water.

"You know, this is actually kind of nice." Although not the kind of experience he ever imagined he'd have! The train is good at giving people those, huh.. "You could make this your day job."

At least that's just a light joke. He knows that whole wizard business seems pretty important to Nita.

"What's a wyvern?" Tidus asks, a brow raised and his body turning slightly to face Inigo. A sliver of humour as he gathers, from the whole poking thing, "Something you don't want to be poking?"

The thing your parents would tell you not to poke, anyway. And therefore a challenge to a kid.

Tidus laughs at that last part. He can understand, or sympathise.

"That's all of us, huh? I tell people about the biggest sport where I come from that's been around a thousand years, and people give me nothing." No reaction, nada. He's gotten used to it, even if it's still outrageous. All this water, and when will they be around a sea again? And he can't even play a good game of blitzball.

"So what, you've gone to different worlds before? Or do people just...come over from other worlds to yours?"

Which he asks with some bewilderment. He's getting used to hearing this too, but it hasn't lost its sheen yet.

"You seen a shark, and a thing called a bear? Stick a shark's head on top of a bear, this furry thing with claws--" because apparently, Tidus feels the need to describe what a bear is more than a shark, though he's risen his hands on either side of his head to give an indication of the head, "--and we got that. Faster than they look!"

Was that an apt description? He was bound to see the parts of the creature around if he poked around the village enough, anyway.

But this Red guy... Tidus hums thoughtfully. "So he's someone you know back in your world?" Barely, but still. "He arrive the same day as you? That happened to me too," Tidus explains, even adding, "There's also someone here who knows me I've never met."

From the way the panther springs to action at Nita's return, it's clear that was exactly what she'd had planned and the bats the ball in Drizzt's direction. Guenhwyvar wasn't an expert on projectile accuracy, but the quick and agile Drow was able to recover it with another tumble through the sand.

He came up grinning, eyebrows raised in Nita direction as he raised the retrieved ball questioningly. He doesn't give her much time to respond before he lobs the ball in her direction. He's extremely glad Tidus showed him how entertaining throwing a ball around can be.

She had her eyes open, looking down now and again and seeing what there was to offer. So far she couldn't really see any shells that she particularly liked. But she was going to keep searching.

"How many are you hoping to find?"

Well, she wasn't wrong, so long as she understood that Zetta was to be judged far more by his actions than his words.

"Divinity's a hotbed of politics where you're from?" This was his first thought, not, 'hey people around 20 can be turds'.

"Ohhhh I see. It's really not, but I gjuess that means you enjoy things like this a little more when you can, right?"

She nodded slightly. Now that she knew the other was in the army, she had a feeling this person will hit the ball hard and that was just fine with her.

Throwing the ball up she served, going to hit it over.

"The only difference is the ground beneath us, so if you can adapt to sand you should be fine." She knew she probably would quickly anyway from the amount of time she played volleyball in general.

Soon she threw the ball up and hit it over to the other.

Minako watched the ball, seeing where it was going before she went to hit it using her wrists. She was staying with hitting it lightly for the time being.

"I am good at it, but not an expert." Her eyes were once again back on the ball even though it wasn't on her side. "I'm... from Japan. If you want me to be exact I can be? What about you?"

Hmm - to thread wrap, or bring this back around to Zetta? And yes, I'm enjoying this thread! o7

Not quite rolling her eyes, smiling to herself in bemusement, she set off for what could charitably be called a cruise.

As long as the Prinny stayed put - and didn't try, say, tap-dancing on her back - the ride would pass in peace, with no further incidents.

But, alas, all good things come to an end, and once Nita came around to spot a familiar overlord-book, she called for her passenger's attention.

/Okay, here we are. Thanks for keeping quiet and everything. You all right getting back to shore?/

[personal profile] unfavorableinstigation 2020-05-26 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
/I wish it worked that way for me,/ Nita said wryly.

/I can change my clothes, and my shape, but not both at the same time!/

It would indeed be a few minutes, but a brunette human - not all that tall for a human, but at 5'4 or so she was still taller than Tangle herself - in blue shorts and a t-shirt walked back along the beach to continue the conversation.

"Thanks for waiting," she said, holding out a hand to shake.

"That is strange. Wish I could say it was the strangest thing about this world, though," Nita replied, once she'd finished swallowing again.

"And normally, yeah. The Speech is there to facilitate communication with all kinds of life, animate or inanimate, even the abstract if you can sustain the right mindset."

Hence why the train's refusal to interact felt alarming to her, at times.

So it was the whole unrequited style. Something he was sort of familiar with. the only difference was he never said anything before she left rather than a situation like this happening. But wasn't it the same thing for the sense of heartbreak and in Allen's case regret.

"I'm not going to lie and say it's not your fault. By not saying anything you subjected yourself to him finding someone, which he seems to have. With worlds like this not saying something is actually a very terrible idea because you never know what will happen and then you're left upset and filled with regret. Believe me I never told someone how I felt about them before they left the last world I was in. I regret never saying anything, but it also taught me that if I ever feel something like that again no matter what, I should tell them."

He felt bad at saying that he felt like the other was in part at fault, but he figured it wasn't that bad and to try and teach something new... which was new for even him to be doing.

"I am sure that someday you'll find someone that you will be comfortable admitting your feelings to and that they will feel the same way back. But I guess always take the negative and find something positive from it. Don't let worries with not knowing to get in the way because you never know what could happen."

He soon rubbed the back of his neck slightly "I'm sorry if I come across as harsh by the way, but I can at least understand being upset."
