Onward: Purple

Rescue Efforts

Progress has been good, with many of the trapped citizens now rescued and parts of the city put to rights. There are only a couple of pockets of trapped people remaining, where it is proving difficult structurally to clear the tunnels. Even so, spirits are high; it’s believed they’ll be able to do so with the Voidtreckers’ assistance.

Work is still done in shifts and continues through the night. Voidtreckers are encouraged to rest after their shifts, and stagger themselves. It’s likely that there’s a mix of people awake and asleep as the sun rises on the third day.

Dawn Attack

Not long after dawn many of the Terran phones begin ringing with notifications and alarms, and there is a general wave of panic that spreads through the adult Terran. Followed by a rush of activity, as those asleep are quickly shaken awake to get ready.

It won’t take long, they’re told. There has been an attack. Not here, but in another segment of the city. Unknown forces, monstrosities of some kind coming down the service tunnels. Forces are holding them off but they need backup. Transport is quickly arranged and any Voidtreckers who wish to go and help can do so.

Transport is a train, one that is sourced incredibly quickly and filled with combat-ready Terran civilians. Not all go, since people are still needed to finish the rescue efforts and prepare for any attack in this sector.

Those that do go will find a battle raging between Terran and monsters. It may be that shortly after the Voidtreckers and their Terran friends turn up they will be joined by some more adventurous members of Orange Team who followed the monsters down the tunnels.

Days of Fighting

Throughout the next few days (G7-G11), fights spring up around the city. Though the first fight was against monsters from the lab, it seems others have found ways of getting into the tunnel system. The Terran are practical and quickly set up systems of transport for quick response. They don’t have much in the way of lights; their own decorative lights are soft, which will drive the creatures back from illuminated areas but be unable to destroy them.

They will happily accept as much help as the Voidtreckers can give. The fighting is lessened as the day goes on, as no new monsters enter the tunnels, but sunset brings fresh recruits.

For those who cannot or do not wish to fight there is plenty that needs doing. Centres are set up for the injured. Fighters need food and water. There are still collapsed tunnels that need repaired and cleaned up. The final trapped citizens need to be brought to safety. Children need to be watched and kept out of danger.

A Rumour

Talking of children, as the days go by the Terran teenagers get more and more agitated. A few times they can be seen trying to approach exhausted and stressed adults, mobile phones in their hands as they try and explain something.

They are quickly dismissed. If asked about it the teenagers will tell literally anyone who listens that they think the monsters are going after The Dweller. They will distractedly explain that it is some lifeform within the planet that ‘those Gry’ worship as a god.

‘Those Gry’ are their primary source of information, in fact, and most of their evidence seems to be coming from dream interpretation forums. Probably why they aren’t getting taken seriously by their stressed parents.

"The civilians are staying alive so, y'know...about as good as it ever gets."

Cassie's appearance is strikingly more rough than usual. She's done the best she could to get the worst of the monster blood off her clothes during whatever breaks she could get, but there's only so much one can do.

"How about you? You having any fun out there?"

"Sure. Spending nights surrounded by those fiends, being yanked around by whoever's in charge to trek through a desert? It's great."

He sighs, shaking his head.

"Other than getting the people getting trapped in the tunnels out, I don't know why we're out there in the first place. We could've been stuck with Orange."

"A soldier's job is never to ask why. That's for the politicians to figure out. Though in this case..."

Green light isn't the best option, but it's still light.

"If nothing else, banging sticks together to make green sparks is a new experience for me. Never thought 'make my own sparklers' would be a tactic I'd have to use."

"I never thought I'd be using magic this much."

Or still. But he definitely wasn't the magic guy back in the day unless it was to do with speed.

But despite all that, what she said does have Tidus curious. "You don't care about the why? Just about coming out and doing the mission?"

"I mean, I do," Cassie says. "But I am really, really used to not knowing sometimes. 'Course, I'm also used to it being abundantly clear, but 'defeat this god or the world will end' isn't a mission you want to have to deal with either."
blitzcheer: (game face rrr!!)

"What if I told you I want to get in a fight with a god?" Tidus says, a slip of a joking smile until his tone eases. "I guess, you know, it doesn't matter right now, and I'd still choose to help out here than not, but let's just say being out in the desert with those things all around us at night and the train or whoever giving us nothin' for supplies, I wouldn't mind finding a way to fight them either."

Even if 'them' is the literal train. Whatever. Thomas the Tank Engine is still a silent no-answering bastard.

"Well, I'd give you some advice on that, but word to the wise, it ain't fun."

A slightly more grim joking smile accompanies that response.

"The second part is what bugs me more. We don't have any supplies, ammo, guidance, or proper command. No army would operate like this."

Her grin widens slightly.

"It's a good thing there are at least some people here who are as awesome as me."

He huffs, a small laugh, but there's something that sticks to him, that mention of an army. Turning in his head and being the reason he frowns in a thoughtful way, rather bitterly. Then sighing.

"Maybe we're like an army, what we're doing. But in the end, isn't it more that we're just..." He pauses, struggling to find the word, until- "--disposable? Easy to use? It can take us from anywhere, stick us in an outfit and give us a job. And then it can take you away just as easy."

And then, with a beat: "Expendable." He raises his arms in a sort of shrug. "It doesn't matter what we were in the middle of. Just where it wants to take us."

"Yeah. Like I said, army. The President says 'jump', we say 'into what country?'"

I mean, that's how it is, Tidus.

"Only difference is, you volunteer for the Army and don't get to pick whether you go on missions or not. With the train, it's the opposite."
blitzcheer: (blah blah bluh wuh weh)

[personal profile] blitzcheer 2020-07-19 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
"That's what I mean though. Calling this an army's nice, it gives it too much credit. Even if you can pick to stay behind, you think anyone will?"

It's skeevy and he doesn't like it. Even if he wonders what would happen if they didn't choose to do the missions, he doesn't care for the consequence that comes with it. He'd never choose to.

"We're basically the weirdest version of prisoners who get a nice music car or games room once a month. Gah," and he huffs, shakes his head while folding his arms.

"It's just pissing me off this mission."

"Some countries have a draft," Cassie says. "Our numbers came up. I mean, I get it, it sucks ass. I had shit to do back home. But while I'm here I'll help where I can."
blitzcheer: (eyyyyy summoner)

"I don't want us to stop doing this," he says. "I'll keep going out on these no matter how long I'm stuck."

It was just all the rest, but Tidus didn't want to keep on complaining about it. He tilts his neck to each side, sighing, decides to ask instead:

"When we get back, I wanna ask you 'bout the kinda things you'd have on the road in an army. See if there's anything useful we can try getting with points."

"Well, the big ones would be weapons and body armor," Cassie says. "But yeah, we definitely need to get into specifics on that when we get back."
