It all sounds awfully complicated to the priest, and nothing he can contribute any insight into, so he continues to say nothing.

The only reason he's still here, is because it's at least interesting on some level. Like a book with a convoluted plot, only he's picked up one in the middle of a series instead of starting with the first.
