Taiki agreed wholeheartedly. Or more his heart told him that fighting was always wrong but he knew that worse could come if people sat idle whilst others were in danger.
Such was the heartbreak of being a kirin. "Ah it was in a place called Tetsui. A long time ago. Before I was born because it was when the old king was on the throne. It was near the end of his reign... He had lost the way so was not a good king to his people and the people of Tetsui rebelled, refusing to pay taxes and cutting off trade. Um... So Lord Gyousou was a general then and he had been ordered to put down the rebellion and open the treasury there to reclaim the taxes." It was clear Taiki has heard this story third or fourth hand, but he is doing his best.
"Um he took just a division and left most of the army further back. His men wanted to fight and put down the rebellion hard, so that they would not be stuck in the mountains over winter but Lord Gyousou understood um... The people they were hurting. They were rebelling because the summer had been cool and the winter would be hard. He couldn't go against the king because um... that's going against the gods. In our world... but he knew it would be wrong, to punish the people for being desperate and taking matters into their own hands."
It must have been hard, to know the king was hurting the people yet to have the king still on the throne, not rejected by the gods yet. "So he said... um Lord Gyousou that is that though the imperial decree said to open the stores and the treasury it said nothing about harming even one citizen of Tetsui. So he forbade his men from carrying swords. Instead they made shields and covered them in white lambs wool. They were for defense only, the white was so blood would show and they would know which soldier was responsible for harming a citizen. At first people were suspicious but then they saw it was true... They wouldn't be harmed. Anyone they captured was spoken to and released. For forty one days they were at a stand off but in the end the people and Lord Gyousou's troops found a compromise and the stores were opened. So um... In those areas of Tai a Tetsui shield is a phrase for... a gesture of good will. Because of Lord Gyousou."
