The Waking of Neran
It is indeed, with thick winter coats, hats, scarves and gloves in all sizes. There are also some bags suitable for carrying food, for anyone who wants to add to the festival food with more food!
They have the morning to prepare before another announcement.
"Shortly arriving in System #78961112094711. The weather is extremely cold, voidtreckers and passengers should wrap up warm and wear their SCA's at all times. Arriving in ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one."
The train shakes as they leave the void and they will see dark skies with glowing flecks of light falling down around them. It's only a glimpse before there is rock to both sides as they enter the landing area.

The Waking of Neran
... ARRIVAL TO OSIGA

For those turn their gaze to where the cold comes, they will see a view of the world: a landscape of mountains lit in burning bright blue. Like Christmas and city lights, they can be seen in the far distance, and the sky too glows with a shimmering, falling blue. It looks like a slow rain, while farther up, the twinkling of actual stars can be glimpsed.
This will be their view of the world for three Osiga days - 210 hours, give or take.
The lower floor widens into a train-like station, shuttles ready to take them into Osiga proper in short five minute rides. They just need to figure out they need to scan their SCAs at the turnstiles, which will beep with approval, and send a map to their SCA of the grotto.
With a handy dot to their hotel.
... THE IRUE GROTTO

There's stairs that can be taken, but also elevators. The bedrooms are much the same as the lobby, with paints and furs all around - the furs especially covering the beds, along with hand stitched quilts. In the centre is a fire pit, set with heatstones than wood or coal, and extras in a container by a wall with safety instructions of how to move them (with tongs and gloves).
Outside the rest of the grotto can be seen, a mish-mash of layers closer to a labyrinth. There's curtains for privacy, and also a screen to help blot out the sound.
FOOD & SIGHTS.

Water runs through constructed streams, small but always in travel. They fall off into small waterfalls, eventually gathering into pools that always ensure drink is around. But there's also drinking spaces around, wall coves where servers mind the drinks, and people gather around on crouched seating. Privacy isn't a big deal in Osiga; visitors welcomed into conversation freely. The drinks favour the strong, spicy and sweet. Their traditional drinks are a fiery whisky and a sweet creamy milk drink flavoured by spices that taste very much like cinnamon and nutmeg. It is strongly alcoholic though there is a non alcoholic version as well. There are other drinks available of course from other planets but visitors are encouraged in a good natured way to try the good stuff.
And let's not forget the food. Most traditional Osigian dishes are spicy yet sweet, fatty, and largely meat. There are also food baskets all over, filled with wrapped snacks free for taking, or to add your own. Never let your neighbour go hungry. What will you find, dipping your hand in: a treat, or a mistake?

Keeping company is better than not. Anyone who goes in alone will find the chill uncomfortable to those who have someone else nearby, SCAs working stronger together. Paths somehow stay free from being covered in the icy mess, and every few yards are grit bins with small bags to put the contents in, instructions as to what to do.
And that's to throw them at the sculptures, into the air, and watch as the hardened ice disperses into a fizzle of lights. The sight is considered beautiful, and especially fun for kids and couples.
... ANAN & THE MINISTRY
It's maybe an hour or so after their arrival when a message comes through the comms on their SCA's.

For those that wish to go and meet her, they can.

... THE WAKING OF NERAN

People begin making their way to the main streets where the parade will go. Some people may have made candles throughout the day but there are also long candles for sale and 'fire' bearers carrying large torches to light the candles. The main lights are all turned off, plunging the streets into darkness lit only by the candles and the faint distant glow of sors.
The parade itself has large lit floats, literally floating above the ground, the lights are in intricate shapes. There are light dancers- people dressed completely in black to blend in to the night, with ribbons of light doing feats of acrobatics to music- instruments and volcaless voices weaving melodies.
After the parade passes by people move to the streams, where their floating candles that can be lit and sent on their way. There are designated areas for the tall candles to be placed- almost shrine like with areas to pray or think or sing- the helpful guides will assist anyone and are very open to the different ways people from various worlds and cultures may wish to remember their dead.
Afterwards people are encouraged to drink, eat, spend time with the living and swap stories of the dead. Dance and sing. It is upbeat, joyous and the tears are meant to be cathartic.
NIGHT TWO: PERSEVERING. After another day of activities- or resting and recovering from the excess of the night before the grotto again is ready in anticipation. The side of the grotto open to the sky is packed with people, ledges and railings packed with people. Even the buildings on this side of the grotto have opened their doors to allow people up on their roofs to watch the firework display.
Sparklers are sold, as are snacks and drinks and a voice comes through speakers throughout the space.
"NERAN! On this night you fight!" The crowd cheers. "Hear our dedication, return to us! For tonight is a night of COURAGE!"
The crowd cheers again and the fireworks begin. Loud and colourful, beautiful shapes, almost like dances in the sky. It's loud and it's busy but the atmosphere is great, throughout the night within the crowd there are marriage proposals, declarations of new jobs, decisions to travel the void. Bravery and courage abound- helped probably by the strong whisky that is flowing freely.
NIGHT THREE: UNITY. The festival continues, though it's a slightly later start on day three for many who are nursing hangovers, having a well earned sleep in preparation for the final night or just frantically trying to remember what declarations they had made the night before.
But the activities are still happening throughout the grotto- though the guides might advise any obvious voidtravellers that they may wish to nap before 'night' time, especially if they are not used to day/night cycles this long. The final night doesn't stop til sunrise after all and no one wants to miss the sun rising!
As the time comes for the party to start every square and every street is packed, music blares through speakers. Traditional Osigan music mixed with styles and music from other planets in the galexy. The traditional Osigan music has many layers, deep bass instruments that seem to make the ground itself rumble.
There is dancing, led by guides and locals. They are big circle dances, loud energetic and done in unity. There are callers who keep everyone in time and remind them of the steps but it is mostly an exercise in organised chaos.
But very fun organised chaos. There's extra chairs and benches set around for people who would rather watch or need a break from the endless swirl of dancers. There's plenty of water in large barrels for people to help themselves and other drinks are available to buy.
The party goes on for hours but eventually the music stops and there is an announcement that they have an hour left until sunrise. People begin moving out to find the best spots to watch. Up high on the cliffs people spread out rugs and blankets and settle, waiting.
The atmosphere is one of anticipation, people passing around drinks and snacks. Then there is a hush, a cry as for the first time in a month the first ray of light streaks across the sky.
Neran has awoken. The sun has returned once more.

OOC NOTES
have tidus come cry at my guys, watch them bluescreen instead
A pause as he blinks through the whole of the technomagic that is forever going to give him headaches as well as provide avenues to access things in a way he hadn't dreamed; Jingyi isn't reluctant to try new things, though if he doesn't see the practicality or fun in some, he's less enthused.
This, however, a planet on display from this individual's hand, their fingers?
He steps forward, tail giving a shiver as the fur stands on end, not alarmed, but engaged. Overly focussed, for a moment, on that planet, a world of itself. One not on the brink of total destruction in an anomalous way, and hah, so that brings to mind other questions, but not for himself or his world. If this is his, and he can allow himself to believe it may as well be.
"There's something surreal in being the first person from home to see the whole of my world," he says, quieter, studying the planet shown from its different points. Not meant for commentary, but stated nonetheless. Then a nod, accepting the evaluation for what it is, while asking what had come to mind.
"Worlds destroying themselves from causes inherent to those worlds, would those indicate any kind of anomaly?"
no subject
"Depends on scale. A world destroying itself, well, yes, that would be of concern. People, individuals, needing to be reassigned to a new world if possible, advisable. Do you mean the planet itself? We would watch out for that. But, every world is different. It can take time to read it properly. Is the world destroying itself? Planets do that sometimes."
And wouldn't that be concerning.
no subject
His own world, however, whatever balances and imbalances were present, shouldn't be that upsetting. The wars that plagued it were far more regional, far less on the scale of world-ending levels. As far as other ways for a world to destroy itself, ones caused by world... what, instabilities?
He's just glad there doesn't appear to be indications of the world-unmaking shapes around his homeworld. He can be simple and unapologetic about it.
no subject
An answer for Jingyi's concern, which Ten-Nank can understand - since Jingyi stated it, plainly enough. The floating images of the world continue to be between them, Ten-Nank only then bringing their suspended arm back towards their body.
no subject
"..." He sighs, sounding temporarily resigned. "Wonder if that means he'll be pissed off that I said anything."
A shrug, but it's that scale he wants to know, given the rest even annoyingly made sense. Gods aren't much of a concern to him in a personal sense, between being a divine being and knowing true "gods" on the train. Cultivators don't often attempt ascending back home, but they could, if so inclined.
So different understandings, different areas of influence, it's logical. Not personal, as it is.
He reaches towards the floating images, seeing if there's any response to his touch.
"Were you offered any choice in this assignment?"
no subject
Certainly, no amount of them moves in their seat.
"I had a choice," they answer, simple as. "I accepted it."
no subject
"Why?"
Asked while still attempting to touch one of the floating images of his world. Curious in learning it was a choice, not the kind of assignment he's used to back home; curious why they accepted, and expecting no answer.
Still asking. He always does.
no subject
"I observed no reason to decline it," Ten-Nank replies. A simple answer for a simple question.
no subject
"Is this really the first case of people being tethered by a process no one appears to be controlling?"
He tests the strange feeling against his spread digits, then sighs in a much more personally aggrieved way.
"Are there any other photograph illustrations, or just these ones?"
no subject
Then. "As for your first - yes. Well, with all the factors in. A system that doesn't exist tethering individuals in a way we can't analyse. People, individuals, beings, have been forcibly taken from their worlds, planets, places of being before. Taken to work on missions without apparent cost to those aided? Unusual. Especially connecting those who should be perished beyond the ability to hold a connection."
no subject
It's a tantalizing possiblity, his hand dropping away from the floating images, gaze moving toward the one speaking.
"If there's any from a region of the world called Gusu, locally, I would really appreciate knowing how to get ahold of that." Assuming, as he does, that no one would have tried to infiltrate his sect's mountain, between it's wards, flying dragons, and the obscuring fogs.
The whole of what is unique in their situation being the collective factors further gives him pause, his grown obvious.
"That they're bodied is stranger to me," he says, "Though in at least one case, I know they only do with the tether strengthening the belief in his reality. Spirits being tethered after death and made to take action isn't impossible on my world."
Not great, so heavily depending on the person and that use. His tail sways behind him, low and contemplative.
"What do you mean by, without apparent cost to the aided?"
no subject
And from the Ministry's reports, there was nothing involving that and the voidcraft The Voidtrecker Express.
"And to reverse answers again," Ten-Nank says, though allowing a pause before doing so: "--Libraries, there are probably a few public places for networking. I could search, I suppose. Easier to search by system designa--results."
They cut into themselves, lift what mimics a chin on their head, and with the other floating images appears two more, book covers.
'Photo History: #41817154201354'
'Ten Moments of...(Name of world here)'
The Photo History cover has an aerial view of somewhere, whether known to Jingyi or not, while the other cover has a more grounded spot for its photography. Both are beautiful in their work, if only a touch - a moment - of the world.
"Gusu, I don't know if there's a Gusu inside. The Photo History book is larger. Or you can download it. On your SCA? I don't know what you can do with your SCA. You have to pay for it."
no subject
It's so strange yet again, but being homesick is something that's sung in his bones over the scant months, humming louder. He picks at the SCA on his wrist, abruptly pulling it off, handing it over.
"I don't know what it does or doesn't do. I don't even know these places, but unless there's a way to take photographs from memories, choosier beggars starve."
Whatever credits on there without access to any particular store, and temperature drop barely a flutter of his eyelashes. It's the willingness to admit ignorance and still seek answers that he can offer, not knowing what kind of store to use.
"If it's the points the train awards, I've those, too. Though that's been weird to me from the start, this whole on vessel merchant options that show up on restocking. Is that normal? Your vessel awards points in some weird way and has you use those points to get other things through it's merchant function?"
Traffick for rewards, in a warped sense. What's the give and take here when the take was presumptive, and the give came at cost?
no subject
They sound more tired than usual in that request.
"You believe I can do anything, apparently. Or think I can figure out your SCA. Or do you believe I owe you? Regardless, I'm not a technician. It's also inadvisable for me to do anything to your SCA more than I have, spook the voidcraft. Upset it. I am an unfavourable, after all. A member of the Ministry."
So, Ten-Nank doesn't take it, simply staying in their reclined position.
"There are different types of voidcrafts. Do I know all of them? No. But, there are some systems similar to this out there. You do what is expected of you, you earn currency for purchase. Some voidcrafts are simply to allow people travel. No reward system."
no subject
"As far as I can tell, it's a weird bribery system."
He rolls his eyes, still holding onto his SCA without putting it back on.
"Why people think they don't sound arrogant for talking about devices like these as if everyone knows exactly how they work, then get annoyed when you point out you don't know, I'll never understand. How do you get to assuming I believe you know everything? What's this technician you talk about? Why assume I wouldn't tell the Voidtrecker Express if you looked at this? Where does owing come into anything?"
He snorts, dismissive and unimpressed with what seems like a whole bunch of logic leaps to him.
"To those of us from worlds that have nothing close to inventions and devices like this. Should we pretend we know what you're talking about, to spare you from having to choose to explain it or not?"
no subject
There's a pause. "I can explain, I can tell you information, answer questions, but you have to ask."
no subject
Another sigh, a shake of his head. It's not new, but the conflict of cultures, expectations, is ever present.
"Tell me what asking questions sounds like to you. How direct do I need to be?"
no subject
Now, they copy the same gesture as Jingyi had made.
"--it can be considered a demand, rude, or otherwise. Intent matters, my programs tell me."
They pause, their hand continuing to stay out.
"It is not arrogance I am trying to convey. Annoyance. Understanding individuals is difficult. I will take you more literally, if you prefer. You know nothing of the SCA - I'll tell you the basic functions of most SCAs, if you like. I will explain, clarify what I mean by a void technician, if you like. Also, you can or will tell the Voidtrekcer Express as you please - I have no reason or ability to stop you."
Another pause, before they add: "Is this agreeable to you?"
no subject
So different, how they all try to understand and interact and find common grounds. Still, without the attempts made, where are they? Without listening, without acknowledging, what have they decided to become?
"This one apologises for having spoken on assumptions as truth." Apologies owed from his perspective, and he straightens, giving respect without turning it into a marked respect he doesn't owe anyone here, isn't stirred to. Though he does approach, coming to kneel in the manner of a student of his world, SCA in his hands and then held up, expression serious enough.
"Agreeable, yes. Taking me literally, or at the least not looking for a secondary meaning, is going to be less annoying for you. I'm direct. Rudely so at times." Not even a blink, because it's true, and he's not going to pretend otherwise to someone who doesn't know him, and has little reason to, not caught in the same cycle he is.
"So, this is what I know. This image, icon, whatever it's called, that is the anchor thing. Where we enter the... rainbow river of chaos void whatever, and bring people across. This one lets us see a map, though what that map shows depends on the place. This here allows us to speak to others on mission, but doesn't connect to the train, and you can search by a person's name, speak to a colour group, or speak to everyone. Also, I think this one means making the SCA generate light." A tap of his finger for each indication, while he blandly looks to Ten-Nank after. "I don't remember, because I don't need an SCA to generate light, but also because when I've been on mission, I'm more often a dragon than in human form, and it's hell to try and tap anything out with a talon."
no subject
As Jingyi gestures to each of the different icons, they watch and listen quietly.
"I see, as some individuals say - I understand, another way of saying it." They speak eventually, once everyone has been explained. "SCAs - they take on many forms, but their main function is to regulate your...being-" they gesture to Jingyi, the chair slightly moving, "-to be more suitable to where you visit. Every planet, every system, has what you can call different rules for how they exist. How your being suffers due to these differences. It also helps to keep your tether strong, while you are away from the voidcraft. This--"
They point a single digit to the anchor icon.
"--is only allowed by higher level missionaries - those who conduct missions. Most functions depend on the needs of those who wear them."
They pause, still in the position of their finger pointed out.
"I will not copy your gestures, not knowing if it would be polite, but this one apologises for saying you believe I know everything, apparently. It comes off as an exaggeration. Direct, I prefer. Fewer processes. A void technician - a technician is someone proficient in void-related sciences. Crafts. So, for the SCA, they would understand how the SCA works. I can look up information, but unless I can download programs, I'm not proficient in ... machines. Equipment. Crafts. I don't care to be. Having information doesn't make me understand it."
no subject
Meaning he agreed, that having information didn't make information understood. Much like he finds himself facing on many days, though right now, with what's been said by Ten-Nank, he can fit that into something like understanding, and accept it. Void technicians are people either trained, taught, or self-motivated to learn whatever, well, sciences were (and his understanding of science as a whole is very, very loose), and that links to the SCA, which is a void-related device, and thus a circle of some kind establishes itself in his head.
Along with a snort, softer than the derisive sort he also indulges. "Yeah, well, that makes two of us not proficient in machines. Thank you for the explanation about the void technicians. And clarifying what the anchor isn't, in a way." Not present for all, not necessary for most, and it provides better context to him, personally. Not context that makes him happy, but something of a frown. The Voidtrecker Express had what, allowed that function? Enabled it? When Anan had made the call, or asked, or was it always there?
"How dangerous is Anchoring, to your knowledge?" Jingyi's assumptions are aligning to far more than we understood at the time. "And what do you mean, when you say the SCA strengthens our tether? I've seen some literal version of it for an individual," he says, thinking of Tidus, and the flirtation with disappearance, with endurance. "And I know it alters somethings to allow us to function on these different worlds, including ones we're not compatible with at all. The tether thing never had a real explanation I was told, aside from it being why the Voidtrecker Express can keep our spirits out of the reincarnation cycle. In terms of how I understand it."
A further frown, eyes dropping to his SCA, staring at the device with evident confliction.
"Where I'm from, that's just about the worst thing you can do to another person."
no subject
They bring up their hands, show their forefingers spaced. One of the forefingers glows, in three colours: the tip, white, a slim band of gold at the ball-knuckle, and then silver around the lower portion.
"The body. The consciousness. Connected." White glows brighter, then silver, then the gold. The gold band then starts to move out, reaching over to the other forefinger. The white colour fades from the tip of the finger, moving over with the gold, taking over that finger completely.
"It is the craft that holds your connection, on this side. The SCA - it is... like a layer. A shield. A barrier. It is like a signal, with the train. It monitors you, and helps provide the support you need. Medicine. Magic. It is not a cure, but as long as you have it, it can support you. It can dull illness, issues."
A pause. "Before I continue, am I explaining in a way you can make sense of."
no subject
"Oh, I can make sense of it," he says, hands lowered to his lap and curling into fists. White knuckled, he frowns harder. "You're making sense, but that's so messed up. That's worse than I thought it was."
A pause, and a twitch of his fists, though he fails to open them.
"Not the SCA, the tether, I mean. We're not just abducted. Our, ugh. Essence, consciousness, whatever words you want to use or I can, that was abducted. If this tether works like the stable tethers you know."
A further pause, because he's starting to let his anger into his voice, and that's not helpful; it's not Ten-Nank's fault, it's the Voidtrecker Express's whatever mechanism stealing all of them in the first place. Fuck that!
"Wait, shit." Unfisted hands raise, and while he leaves his SCA on his kneeling lap, he holds both palms out to Ten-Nank. "What happens when your body's destroyed while you're tethered to a void vessel?"
no subject
The finger in the band of silver fades to a darkened grey.
"Your essence becomes connected only to the craft. You are trapped in the void. And there is nothing to protect a tethered body from becoming destroyed - it can perish, at any point. If your body were to lose a limb -" they point to one of Jingyi's open palms, with the darkened grey digit, the colouration spreading over their hand in a light that he can move his hand out of.
"--either as you are now, as your essence, or, on your physical being's anchor, you would lose that limb. ... unless you can regrow limbs."
Then that's that. The coloured light fades away, except where they keep to Ten-Nank's fingers.
"Otherwise, you will lose it. It would atrophy on the physical being. Become unusable. Even if it appeared 'fine', as it should - your essence wouldn't comprehend it. Acknowledge it."
no subject
He flexed his fingers under the light projected over his hand, lips still pulled into a frown.
"Bodies reflecting what happens to us here? Does that change with the whole stupid forced resurrection?"
Do bodies fully regenerate if essence is so damaged the essence itself has to resurrect. But he shakes his head.
"When it's home system went, if tethers all and only work like you're saying, the Voidtrecker Express was suddenly staffed by Void Essence only. Then some unknown thing happened after those people tried to travel time, and they went missing, and we started appearing on those platforms."
Thinking out loud through something that's clearly bothering him, his tail the best indication of his unease while he continues kneeling. Twitch, lash, shiver: a predatory creature's fidgeting.
"Reminder that I don't expect you have answers to what I'm asking, but I'm going to ask anyway. What signs indicate a tether has been severed on one end? And how does traveling through time effect that?"
Not because he believes Ten-Nank knows. However, they might know directions to start looking, and asking, before all Jingyi does is start lamenting in genuine horror over his departure from the cycle of reincarnation he believes in for his home system.
