No Place Like Home: The Return

NO PLACE LIKE HOME: THE RETURN

a silence broken...
It's been a very difficult few days. Rocking and rolling into the void and out again. Watching their friends out of the window as they wander from world to world. Meanwhile those lost on worlds continue to wander unable to return to the train at all.

"All attempts at returning those who left have failed. This voidcraft cannot do it alone. It is lucky that unlike those that have left before them, I can still sense them.

But I cannot bring them back alone. This is perhaps too advanced for Voidtreckers, but you have done the improbable before. You say you wish to help. This is how you help."

Their SCA's light up with a message. Or rather, a series of instructions:
In the unlikely event a tether gets stranded on a liminal space platform or between their own world and the platform space, you should, in the first instance, contact the Void technicians who monitor their non-travelling self. However, in the case they cannot be reached or there is a mass displacement of tether, an anchoring procedure can be carried out.

Ideally, this will involve two fully tethered individuals to retrieve the lost tether. One should be a stationary anchor. They should be outside of their void craft, if possible, and in physical contact with it. The second should be a roaming anchor reaching to draw the tethers back. In situations of mass tether displacement the stationary anchor can hold mutiple roaming anchors but it is recommended to not exceed five. In this situation, it is recommended that anchors rotate between stationary and roaming.

To start an anchoring of this kind, those anchoring should activate their anchoring program. Those staying station should reach out to the tethers of those they plan to steady. This might cause some emotional upheaval, and they will need to stay steady, especially if connecting to more than one roaming tether. Roaming anchors then must hold the person they search for in their thoughts and move towards them. It is recommended that the lost tethers activate their emergency beacon to facilitate being found and returning but this is not a necessity.

Once the roaming anchor has found the lost tethers they must keep hold of them and guide them back towards their craft, the stationary tethers must draw them back, pulling them through.
There is an additional note at the end, in different font.

It is as Anan told you. Your minds should visualise it. Be strong Voidtreckers.

... a short-lived dream
The doors open and anyone who wishes to try this can leave onto the platform. It is empty, devoid of the figures they had seen before; and, beyond the fog, devoid of anything. But searching requires their SCAs, not a path, and as people get into teams, they can activate their anchors and begin.

For those who will roam, their minds become filled, visualising light, void, voices and chaos; their bodies feel less stable, like they might unravel if not careful. But for those who will stay, when they touch the Voidtrecker Express, they will feel more stable, grounded. The fog shifts, but the world moves around them without pulling them in.

Thinking of the person they wish to keep stable, a mental and emotional link will be established, and they will feel each other as the roaming anchor sets off to find their missing crew.

Outside the train...

For those that had left - either by choice or by strange happenings - they have found themselves back at their anchor point during Poi 26, regardless of where they were before. For those unfortunate enough not to have a world to return to, or those who were stuck between in the first place, they will find themselves alone, in a fog filled space where no matter how far they walk, nothing greets them.

All those in fog or back in their world receive the same message from their SCAs.

Hold fast. Press your evacuation button. Your friends come.

RETURNERS: FLEETING HAPPINESS
But it's likely before the message arrived, that something wrong has been noticed by those outside the void. More than the bizarre ability to travel between existences, an inability to move far from where they appear. Back at their anchor points, they may notice - in time - colours sometimes flash across the sky, streaking through clouds or making trails in a night sky. At first not much, something to be easily dismissed but it builds. People talk, wonder at what is happening.

For the colours aren't the only thing. Across worlds, in cities, kingdoms, villages, underworlds and space stations, people are dreaming. Bright colours, vivid dreams. Prophets spring from nowhere, people claim to know the future or to have seen the past. Some talk of places and worlds they could not have seen.

Perhaps at first it can be explained away, there are always such people. But more people talk, from urchin children to commanders, people dream and the colours dance.

ANCHORERS: A STEADY HAND
While the stationeries will feel grounded, they aren't blind to what's happening to their roamer. It's as if they're both linked, intimately, meshing together, and they will need to work to keep their feelings separate; hearing each other's thoughts, their feelings. Images of what the other thinks and memories shared between them.

And then there is the search for their teammates, amongst the multiple of realities. Existences move past the roamer, threatening to lose them in the mess, but they must persevere, keep their thoughts on the individual, their stationary anchor to help them. Until finally, they appear - in a world they perhaps know, don't, the kaleidoscope colours of the void faint above their heads.

Speak to each other, keep each other focused, certain, and find who you came to save.

BOTH: HOLDING ON
Searching for individuals, the anchorers will find themselves at a character's anchor point; if they haven't moved far from here or another world, it will be easy to locate them. Now is the time to convince them to come back, and then the eventual work of doing so.

It can be in agreement, or force. Taking a hold of the person, the anchorer can pull them into the mass of chaos. Just like when they helped the guests return to their worlds from the false Diagad, all parties become battered by images, voices. Voices like sirens; 'Just stay,' the voices encourage. 'Just let go and drift into the chaos. It will be easier.'

But they must be strong, move towards their anchor and towards the craft. The crossing doesn't take too long, perhaps ten minutes each way, and once they get to the craft the person they are rescuing glows gold and vanishes. The anchors will know instinctively that they are safe on the train.

And indeed, the rescued will find themselves within the luggage carriage - exhausted, but safe.

TRAIN: AN INEVITABLE RETURN
Exhaustion is something all parties will experience, once everyone is returned to the train and the adrenaline wears off. Those who anchored will be hit with a total exhaustion, leaving them unable to do much more than eat and sleep for a few days. Those rescued won't be as bad, but if they decide to join in with the efforts, they'll too face the soul-tiring experience that other anchorers are.

There's likely to be efforts, to help soothe people over this time. And as people return to their life on the train, they will see the marks of the last few days for those who stayed behind. Broken ceramics, books out of order in the library; the ICPs in the standard coach, storage, sports and games carriages broken, and some damage to furniture.

But for the scars brought on by this event, surely, they will heal - eventually.

OOC NOTES
OOC post. Ask questions here. New second part OOC post here.

First phase of the event took place during Poi 22 to 25; the second phase takes place during Poi 26 to 28 (20-25th February).

VISITING WORLDS: While during Poi 26, it will be possible to go back to wherever they were, or other spaces. However, they will have increasing difficulty doing this, and will feel themselves getting more lost if they try world hopping too much over the next 3 (void) days. It's like something is trying to pull them back, or pull them, but into nowhere.

SCAs: The SCA's comms will not be active at this time.

What might be surprising is that on knocking there is a small well of aether. A small spell sigil that appears and disperses with apparent harmlessness. If the miqo'te is a particularly scholarly type, it was just a spell that sends an alert to someone that it's been triggered. Odd only if you realize it's strange for someone of the Ascian's stature to be using such 'simple tricks'.

In honesty it's all Elidibus could muster by way of defense. At least he'd be awake if someone came to the door. There's a long pause before K'zeka's knock is answered.

"Come in." The voice is certainly belonging to the person sought. The door unlocks but is not opened for the visitor's sake. That's left to whether they want to come in on their own.

Shades on the window will be drawn and the room will be lit with dim but serviceable lighting. Elidibus took the time during that long pause to address his position on the bed; now seated, the duvet still around his waist and his back resting against the pillows and wall of the sleeper. A lighter sheet is draped over his shoulders and covers his torso but it's probably evident that he's wearing no shirt underneath.

The facilities to make beverages have seen their use by way of a used cup on the table next to the ICP and he or someone had brought a meal; the plate and utensils have long been set aside but not yet cleaned up. Nothing of particular remark about it, except that it points to the notion that he hasn't left the room for some time since occupying it. Nor does Elidibus move from the bed, watching silently.

"K'zeka Tia. What brings you to visit?" He sounds fine. Looks... exhausted? Many people who have been serving as anchors are starting to flag in that same way. Yet Elidibus was never seen or notice serving as one in the last couple of days.

"I won't. I swore I wouldn't. But...the train's hurting without them too. I tried to reach it while we were stuck and it was shutting us out, and I got drawn into its mind for a moment. I felt all the pain of loss at once." Seto's usual conviction is there, even if he's rather sleepy. And sore.

He blinks slowly over at Yondu. "You won't be stuck. We'll get you traveling."

Seto is trying his best to focus, but this is a painful test. He's still sore from having had the train in his head a few days ago, and now this whole group is piled in....but he can't let Eva be lost. He's too aware of what could happen.

He tries to project calm to all entities inside and poking at the link.

We have a purpose. Save Eva, save this world. Keep your thoughts on her.

He's doing his best to contribute to this effort, remembering all their secret talks...all their little training tips. He misses her. Not that it's been too long.

Axel's name stops her. Axel. She has to find Axel. And Roxas. She has to... She struggles back towards the voice, the one promising to take her to Axel. She just has to get back to Axel. He'll know what this place is, how to get ack, what to do. But as her gloved hand touches Seto's hand... the voices, the memories wash over her again; wash over them both.

" I don't know who you're supposed to be. But...you can't fight fire with sparks. This Keyblade, it's a sham--worthless."

Xion's voice, but Xion of then, talking to someone else.

"...Special just means different. Because I'm a mistake."

She struggled. Struggled against the urge to just run away. Running away was one of the few things she was good at. But that would hurt Axel. And Taiki. "Axel..." she whispered.

Would anyone else miss her, if she never came back from wherever this was? Axel and Vexen said she was important, but she still didn't understand what that meant.

The cold voice again. "Well, that didn't take long. Did it break again?"
But this time another voice answered. "She's not an "it"!"

"Roxas..." she whispered, trembling badly. She was no longer fighting to not run away, she was fighting to stay standing. Her head hurt as bad as it ever did, and her knees were weak under her.

Axel's voice, talking to the voice that had defended her. Roxas. "Roxas... I meet up with you two every day for ice cream, right? Why do I do that?"

"Huh?"

"I mean, you think about it, I don't need to go out of my way, right?"

"I guess not."

"You wanna know why I do? Because you're my best friends. The three of us...we're inseparable."

Tears ran down her face as her legs gave out from under her.

"Roxas.. Axel..." she whispered, shaking terribly. She turned her hood hidden face to the person holding her hand. "I...I have to find Axel..." she whispered, voice almost lost under the susurrus of this placeless place.

If Axel thought she ran away again, or went home...

Soldat is tired. But they're used to working missions while on the edge of exhaustion, so they soldier on anyway. Some of the others in their head are getting a little loopy, though, which means... more chatty, which is not great when you're in a goddamn four-way mind link. (Jesus, you feel that? Stop. Guys, quiet. No, I'm serious, do you feel that?)

Normally, Soldat is pretty psychically deaf, with no extra senses whatsoever. But they still know what it feels like when minds fix on theirs, too, and back in Beacon it means some very Not Good Things. They just hope these minds aren't that kind of hostile. Or spend so much time confused by their noisy mesh of thoughts that they don't pinpoint them yet.

"Let's just move. Don't engage," they suggest aloud, and start forward, slow but with purpose.

Seto staggers under the force of these emotions. He'd suppressed things like this since childhood, aware he needed to be strong and rock-like. But a lonely one losing friends....he'd felt that so much over the past few days.

His own feelings echo back, sadness, empathy.

"I've lost friends too. Everyone. But you can find Axel again if you follow me," he insists, gently tugging. Come on. Let's go back.

She tries, stumbling against him. "Axel..." said softly. Her free hand went to her head. "My head... hurts...." she whimpered.

The memory of Xion's voice. "It's just... I remember things about the two of them. But I'm nothing more than a puppet--something that somebody created. So why would I have... their memories? Do you know where Sora is now?"

The one who called her KEyblade a sham, replying. "That secret stays with me."

"Why's that?"

"Xion...your memories...they really belong to Sora."

"So you mean...I'm like a part of him?"

"When his memories were scattered, some of them found their way inside you. Now, Sora has been put to sleep so that we can piece together his memory. Except..."

"You can't, because part of it is inside of me. That means... he can't wake up."

"Yeah. You got it. But, if you go with me to Sora right now, we could give the memories inside you back to him."

"So, do you hate me for taking your friend away from you?"

"Nah. I guess...I'm just sad."

"I'm sorry, but...I can't go with you. It's my friends - they need me. And I need them, too."

"Maybe...you should take some time and think about it. Figure out who really needs you more. And where you belong."

"How will I know where I belong, truly? I'm not sure I can promise you I'll come up with the right answer."

"Well, the answer you come up with can't just be right for you. It has to be one that works best for everybody, you and your friends and everyone else."

She struggled, trying to use Seto as an anchor so she could stand. Now as much to escape the voices as to get to Axel. "I want to leave..." she whispered.

But when did she ever get what she wanted?

He knows he has friends, but he also thinks of himself as an acceptable loss. It was Devero out there that made him think people would definitely be trying to get them back, that he wasn't the only mistake stuck outside.

But it does occur to him, then, that Seto was probably trying, too. And trying for him. And he went through somethin' real damn rough because of it.

"I guess that turns down my theory that this was a set-up to discourage us from tryin'."

Yondu doesn't make him get up, but he crouches beside him and puts an arm around his shoulders. No hug was invited, but it's one of those gruff old-man hugs, which should be acceptable. A 'dad' hug as that's his default. But it's grateful, because he knows Seto tried for all of them, and for him. And anyone that invites shit upon themselves on your behalf deserves credit where it's due.

That was understandable. He nods, sure that Romeo won't mind either, and trusting the lil' guy to keep the way open back for them.

"Sure. I'll wait here." That should work, right? If he just stands around - now that they're here, it shouldn't be too much issue sticking around. But he does look around, since they seem to be at some kind of camp. Maybe there's a better view? he wonders; mainly to himself, but there's no 'himself' in this instance.

Tidus has his face turned to the ICP's screen, flicking into life as he inserts in the ticket. A half-turn that comes to face Lioriley, but then a nod following.

"Web's is here. --Spider," he adds as a pause. Can't help a nickname that's stuck forever. "Otoha's not gonna be too happy, I bet. He had a big job to do back home."

It's an aside, one of the unfortunates about everything to do with the train: going back and coming here again, being taken in the first place. But the roster comes up, and Tidus sees the passenger list as in his known language, set in its alphabet.

"Okay, here we go! Masumi Sera... I haven't seen her again, pretty sure she went home. Margulis, Malekith...? Not really sure about them." Has he seen them? Those aren't people he really knows. ...actually, he doesn't know a lot about these people here.

There's only one part of this world that Tidus knows, to focus on. Wei Wuxian over the line might have guesses, his own experience with Lan Jingyi - this one, of the train, perhaps stories shared and told, a familiarity that can only reach so far before the differences make themselves known - might come across. Maybe the few reflections their worlds have to one another can paint a better setting for where Jingyi is possible to be; better than for Tidus to go off his own knowledge, when the brush strokes that paint Spira aren't even the same medium, the same style.

It doesn't matter, regardless. Jingyi is Jingyi - strong-willed in his mind, unreasonable at times, confusing, but a friend still; does what he says, simple like that, but still someone easy to stumble with. And that tail! That tail that Tidus sees sometimes twitch from afar, and has some indescribable urge to do as a cat would to a flimsy toy. ... okay, not pounce it, but there's something there he wants to do.

(As one sometimes considers in their bored, idle moments. Wanna poke that tail.)

These thoughts and feelings are what guide him to Jingyi, the most distinct memory being the look shared beyond the doors before the train left so abruptly, the anxiety that burst from trying to get him back in. Emotions rush, from within Tidus and around him, of realities flying by him as he does them, in the search for--

the ground. That path by the woods obtaining one (1) Tidus from a nowhere, but in an apparent eagerness to arrive; and he stumbles with the actual surface under his feet that appears, crumbling rather ungraciously in a pile of himself. His arms happen by some luck to protect his face, and he's making confused noises as he picks up his head, shaking it, blinking as he looks around with his legs tucked under him.

"Huh?" --! "J-Jingyi!"

Hi, Jingyi, hi! It's Tidus, dress in knee-length trousers and shirt and hoodie - as you do, in ancient China. And there's a pause, a consideration for his company, who gets a- "Hi."

Hi, Sizhui! ...who he won't same the name of, since he knows that's weird.

Sometimes it's a little harder to try and find a specific person. After all, Madoka does know Wangji - but she knows several Wangjis, and just that sheer fact makes it a little harder to dive into the void and think of the specific one she's looking for. She tries to mostly think of this particular Wangji, of what she knows about him that sets him apart from the other ones..

And it helps that she's not alone in this, really. Just having Romeo by her side, just having Tidus back them up from back over on the train - it makes it feel all a little more feasible. Like she just has to think hard enough, and hten she'll find herself right there--

.. in Wangji's world. As the kaleidoscope of colours stops around her and Madoka instead finds herself in some sort of hall, her jaw drops in surprise that they managed to find themselves here, only remembering to quickly call out:

"Mister Wangji..!"

Or, well, she sure hopes it's they. Before fully approaching Wangji, she first makes sure to look if Romeo is still by her side.

It helps that Inigo saw Senku's world back during those few days of being lost out there. It definitely makes it easier to reach out towards Senku in the void after having been dragged back to the train himself. Ending back up on the train after all that was tiring enough that Inigo felt it better to be the one staying on the train, providing the stationary anchor that could hopefully draw Senku and Tidus back there.

So he just tries to focus the best he can. Thinking about Senku until he can sense that Tidus must have arrived at his destination, though with that groaning...

'Are you okay?' is Inigo's main thought at that, sending it over towards Tidus. But if Senku focuses enough, then he might be able to hear it too - a voice somewhere in his head, reaching out to him from further beyond.

Tidus can at least help - far back, being their open way that connects them to the train, but he knows who they're looking for. Wangji, the school teacher; the one who likes poetry, who sat there quietly writing protection talismans for everyone, who had an interest in his blade that Tidus couldn't match.

He helps guide the two younger ones with those memories, and though he isn't present, physically, he can be heard like a voice through their presence.

'Hey! Wangji, we're here for you!'

"M'fine, m'fine," Tidus grumbles, resigned to his fate of just never making a good landing. Getting finally on his knees, and then looking around to take their surroundings - wherever they were, whatever there was to see from here.

There weren't any sounds of people, that one was certain. But what could be seen from this point...?

[Both Shuukichi and Mary are startled at Kaiba's sudden appearance, but Mary, in her paranoia, is openly suspicious of him.

It's Shuukichi who responds first, trying to get control of the situation and make sure his sister will be okay.]

Will she be alright, if she goes back? I was worried something was wrong with her return, ever since I confirmed her body was still in the hospital, but she'll be safe on the train? [Shuukichi's deeply concerned about this, but is helpless to do much besides hope for the best.

Mary, meanwhile, continues to glare at Kaiba, but doesn't say anything. She doesn't trust the train to actually let its passengers go, and is worried that the passengers - Masumi included - are being tricked into trusting it more than they should. She also doesn't like that Kaiba is in the room at all or how he seemed to suddenly show up, and that's putting her on edge too.

Wangji is pleased to see his brother, no matter how tired he is. He shuffles up next to him and makes his own cup, forgoing anything remotely caffeinated and picking a chamomile over his usual green.
He does sigh at the smile, his own face softening in a reply only his brother can understand.
"Perhaps we can get clarification on the matter before the next attempt, so we are more likely to succeed."

"Did you visit home?" He asks whilst watching the leaves steep. There is no judgement in his tone, he knows he is in the minority of not wanting to leave any time soon.
He stirs his tea and rests against the counter for that first sip.

"Is there anything waiting for you upon your return?"

A sigil appearing and disappearing isn't an unusual thing, so he pays it little mind when it doesn't attack him for being there. And were it any other situation, an alarum would be cause for concern if he wasn't already trying to see if the occupant of the room was there.

'Come in' says a familiar voice and he does, sliding the door back shut with his heel once his tail is clear of the threshold.

Elidibus is in bed and K'zeka assumes he'd just woken the man up. The second sheet draped over his torso is a little odd, but compared to anyone else the cat's ever met, fairly tame and not worth more than a mental note and raised eyebrow.

"Haven't seen you around the train in a few bells and went looking." And notably not apologizing for apparently waking Elidibus up.

The island they were situated on, was mainly a gathering area so it was clear of vegetation, just dirt. To Tidus' right a large hut on a platform existed. There would be no sounds of people, just birds. He'd be able to see the suspension bridge, and across the way several stone statues curled up in balls among the various huts there. The huts were mostly made of wood and straw.

Senku caught Inigo's response, that strange mental connection that flared open, and not something he bothered to block out either way. He was used to having something in the back of his mind all the time, thanks to his connection to Eva.

"My world is usually a lot more lively than this." Senku commented dryly.

The distortions that were causing feedback from the world were alive and well, and could be picked up on. Various human voices expressing sorrow, or fear. A kind woman's voice who's thought is simply. I trust in Senku.

Another ominous response in that distorted synthetic version of Senku's voice. 12,800,000 metres, one second. 12,800,000 metres, one second.... It was repeating the command on a loop.

It was hard to say if the voices were in real time, or from the past or future of the world.

Just a light sheet around the shoulders. Shouldn't be too out of the ordinary, right? Something to keep the chill off a bare torso. The usual polo shirt and pants are folded neatly and there's no sign of any other clothes.

Elidibus doesn't expect an apology. Though he seems resigned to someone familiar with him to have finally tracked him down to see what he was up to; there were a lot worse options than K'zeka.

"A few bells?" The Ascian knows better. He'd returned to the luggage car the previous day and hadn't been seen. Shaking his head, he fixes the miqo'te Warrior of Light with a direct look. "Since my return I haven't made my presence known. You've come to find out why have you not?"

There is a short sigh before Elidibus continues. "Our relationship is not one to need small talk. Pray feel free to be more direct about your inquiries. I admit I would prefer we not dance around the matter." Perhaps this last is as much a sign that he's truly exhausted and not just putting up a front.

There's a pause on the other side of the lion; maybe his companion fell asleep? But no-- his voice rises over the gentle lullaby of raindrops after a moment, trying to process what he's saying aloud now that he can't just shove his thoughts at someone and have them understand-- the anchoring process is... strange going in, and strange coming out of.

"Thanks. Y' don't have to; but thanks." There's a bit of a break, trying to remember the words that he himself had heard, but Esteban has a lot of trouble finding his tongue at this point, with how sluggish his mind feels after all-- after all of it.

"Worse case, 'f someone falls asleep here, the train gets them back in their bed. I hear they d'sappear in sparks of gold?" A half-remembered warning, in case Esteban himself poofs out from his current company, but he hasn't seen it himself. He imagines it's very similar to the anchoring though; that split second where the returnee approached and vanished out of thin air-- and hadn't that scared him off first, before the innate knowledge that they were safe had registered through his panic.

Come to think of it, he still doesn't know who he's talking to. He knows they're new; knows that any other day, he'd be all over them, talking animatedly but, well... He'll make an exception for now.

It's okay, Tidus. Madoka knows deep down that you're just in there because you're a water boy, and you just clearly can't resist any body of water when it's right in front of you like this.

It's okay. She won't judge.

Shenanigans aside, Madoka is way too preoccupied for a moment here with making sure to pull Tidus back up on dry ground. It's something she definitely can't do herself with her tiny arms, but with Jiang Cheng's help she will manage to pull Tidus out of the water, trying to pat down his wet clothes for a moment but realising that drying those off right now is basically an impossible mission..

.. so she instead turns towards the man they came here for. Madoka's eyebrows knit together into a frown, since she knows that this isn't good news for him, but..

Well, the voice in her head, Wei Wuxian's guidance at their back - it's telling her to be direct. So they should be, right?

"I.. don't know if you noticed yet." He probably did, she figures. Jiang Cheng is smart. "But something is off. The train.. it didn't properly return anyone home."

She may be a little uncertain here about bringing up Wei Wuxian's words themselves, which is why Madoka just leaves it at this, leaving the rest of the decision up to Tidus as to what to say here.

Determination flows back to him, solid and grounding. Ken's determined too - he's just quieter about it a lot of the time.

"We're going to get through this together." Even if 'this' is currently mist and fog. "I won't give up on the people we can save." It might take a bit, but they can get through it. They can find a way to help the others.

Vegeta manages to raise a brow as Yondu started on the 'needed to talk to you' part of all that, knowing how well that went with Bulma... but was surprised to hear what it lead to. "Really?" He was about to question why Yondu was telling him this, then realize that is what friends did. They actually talked to each other. Apparently.

It also maybe helps Vegeta has a variation of this himself with Trunks. "Is he different from the one in your world or is he like Trunks?" It was still Trunks after all, just raised in a very different world.

Vegeta hadn't shown up for that healer meeting that had been held not that long ago, or really officially put his name down on any list. He was still not that confident with his healing abilities he had picked up, it was enough to maybe stabilize someone from death, or heal up minor stuff, but not enough to be a major contribution. However, if they are desperate... "I have a level of healing obtained after our stop at Diagad. I would not consider my skills up to the level of those specializing in healing, however I offer my help if it is required."
