Fierce New World- Mission Start!

"Good Morning passengers. Today is day six of the month of Jelly." The voice echoes through the train as passengers wake up in their beds. Not long afterwards their SCA’s glow with the colour of the void and a holographic image will appear.

Preparation and Arrival

They have a short time to prepare for their mission, enough time to read their briefs, make decisions, meet in their teams and gather anything they may need.

A few hours later there is another announcement. "Shortly arriving on System #2207385. All passengers get ready to disembark. Next stop world #2207385. Exit from void in ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one."

The train judders as it leaves the void, the colours from the windows turn into the blackness of space but quickly white as the train descends into the entrance of the biosphere.

The doors of the train open and passengers can enter the large white-walled holding bay. Currently, they are the only vehicle inside. There are four large doors around the bay each labelled with where they lead. Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

The doors open easily, and their SCA’s show a basic route, though the non-linear nature of the sectors mean that obstacles will need to be navigated. While they are in a closed world, there is a day and night cycle: the panels far up above are designed to make it seem like there is a natural sky, brightening and dimming every ten hours.

Red/Summer

Empty Streets

Wide streets divide sealed-off factories and manufacturing pods that tower up towards the ‘sky’. It is hot here, though the fumes from the factories are vented out, leaving the air breathable if overly warm.

Sometimes the pods are not yet finished, empty shells that can be sheltered in. There are also stations for living, with plumbing and basic amenities scattered through the sector. Places to rest as they move towards the center and the Great-Summer that they seek.

Helpmates

Where factories are still being built they will find Helpmates, operating machinery or moving materials.

They will not pause in their tasks for long but are programmed to answer questions so can be drawn into a conversation. Or, if the Voidtreckers are unfortunate, they will find those that are malfunctioning turning on them as they approach.

They aren’t too difficult to fight, but can do some damage with the machinery if they manage to take a Voidtrecker by surprise. They can be fought with weapons or magic, or for those that think to use the panels they can be shut down outright.

Wild Weather

Though warm, the corridors remain a constant temperature that is not too unpleasant for people. For the most part. Unfortunately, due to the malfunctioning state of things routes may become impassable. Boiling air, freezing blasts, electricity crackling across a pathway.

Their SCA’s do a good job of warning them, allowing them to change direction or shelter in nearby buildings.

Purple/Autumn

Exploring

The Autumn sector is the least complete of the sectors, with shells of habitation pods and not much else. No one is expected to live here until nearing the end of construction, and so the pods are unfurnished, many missing doors, some missing internal walls.

Outside the streets are wide and clearly made to be pleasant to walk on; it is airy, bright and spacious, if a bit eerie due to the quiet.

There are panels on the walls, to call Helpmates to appear. Here they are primarily for helping citizens, giving directions and offering aid.

Malfunctions

Since there are more helpmates there is more risk of them malfunctioning. They attack with or without weapons, using any tools they can pick up to attack. They can be fought with weapons or magic, or for those that think to use the panels they can be shut down.

They won’t chase people into the houses, their privacy programming preventing them from doing so.

Turned Around

The roads seem simple, built in a grid pattern around the houses. However, whatever is going wrong here is affecting the very streets themselves. Sometimes there will be a wall where there wasn’t before or roads go in circles. Sometimes they find themselves at a dead end, trapped until structures shift again.

Their SCA’s do their best to keep up but it can take a while for them to reroute and by the time they do, that path might be blocked too!

Blue/Spring

Patchwork Forest

The Spring sector houses the hydroponics and pastoral sections. It alternates between grazing land and more heavily forested areas with rows of pine-like trees in a checkerboard pattern, with empty plots interspersed. Walkways divide each square, but all squares appear able to move about as required, as though on a conveyor system.

There are clear walkways to avoid stepping on any newly growing plants. In the grazing land live flocks of camelid creatures resembling alpacas with blueish wool, on average a metre and a half tall at the shoulders. Helpmates appear here as if on a timer to feed the animals and tend to plants.

Destruction

If the Helpmates here malfunction they attack anyone nearby, cause havoc to any farming equipment and frightening the animals.

They can be fought with weapons or magic, or for those that think to use the panels they can be shut down. The panels here are less obvious than they are in the more urban sectors, low to the ground, looking almost like energy panels. But once they know what to look for they will be able to use them to shut down the Helpmates.

Stampede

Frightened animals are likely to flee and unfortunately in this case it means rampaging across the grazing land to the newly growing trees.

They will need to be calmed, returned to their grazing lands and the plants restored. Or it might be that the Voidtreckers can stop the Helpmates before the creatures get too spooked.

Orange/Winter

Exploring

The Winter sector’s primary concern is life support. Huge banks of air scrubbers form artificial cliffs, while other sections are tanks filled with water in varying stages of processing or recycling.

The paths here are a lot narrower than they are in other areas, sometimes requiring moving between pipes or scrambling over layers of railing.

There doesn’t seem to be any easy or straightforward path through the sector, their SCA takes them on wild winding routes through the machinery.

Help or Hindrance

The fluctuating temperatures here are causing problems with many of the pipes, several sections are flooded, others are in danger of being so.

There are patch kits in easily opened panels, designed to be used by the helpmates and indeed there are many helpmates out.

But some are less helpful, those that are malfunctioning are more likely to cause more damage than they are there to fix. They will attack any one who tries to interfere with them. They can be fought with weapons or magic, or for those that think to use the panels they can be shut down.

Patch Job

Once the malfunctioning Helpmates are dealt with the pipes still need to be fixed. The patch kits do not have any instructions but are simple enough that anyone with a basic knowledge of how to fix things should be able to figure them out- though the more knowledge and expertise they have the better the fix!

For those that don’t, many of the jobs will need more than one person and so for those that don’t mind taking instructions they will find an extra pair of hands is always welcome.

"Yeah, well, keeps me in the Mentalist's good graces, and uses up some of what I have on hand." It was a bit of a win/win that way.

At the change in tone he glanced at Roland. "Yeah, of course. I'm not afraid to cower behind people." He admitted with a bit of a chuckle. "Keeps me alive."

At the last question, he hesitated, and it was clear he was hesitating. "There is an experiment I'm going to run, but I didn't think you wanted to hear about it." Senku admitted. "The results, obviously, but not the experiment itself considering..."

Roland tries not to let such language deter him from approaching Senku with characteristic determination, despite the upcoming mission when they disembark. He still wants to help him, empower him to at least defend himself no matter how many times Gen and Senku tell him it's been done before. He's stubborn too, and desires for Senku to be able to protect himself if no one else would be around...At least, just to buy him enough time to run for help.

But that's Roland for you, and thankfully the shift in conversation stops him from speaking such things out loud.

"Considering what?" He supplements easily, calmly. If Senku's already apprehensive about it, then he won't add to his mounting concern. "What is it?"

It was definitely a topic for another time. Senku sighed a little bit. "I was wary, because of how you reacted about my SCA. But hear me out." He said, to preface his plan.

"We think it's tethering us. We know it handles the translations. We think that's about all it does. That's something we haven't proven and trying to order books about it has failed. I don't think we really know what this thing is capable of, and I think that understanding that could be an important step in understanding the tether."

He paused and considered his words. "Tidus has taken his off before, on a platform, not a world. His experience was completely different from mine. Why is that?" Senku asked. "Is it because it's tied to us individually? Or does it do different things between locations? Those are just two variables I can think of." He didn't know if Roland knew about Tidus being potentially a special case.

"It's a dangerous, risky, experiment, but I'm planning on mitigating the danger."

The moment the SCA comes into question, Roland is all ears and then some. He's fully facing Senku, and nothing else would have distracted him from the conversation. Especially not after what's been said, and the deepening frown on his face that indicates clearly how he feels.

"I was there when he did." Roland answers shortly. If he's protective about the issue, it's only because it isn't a memory he enjoys revisiting. There's a thought to explore here, with the ideas Senku is throwing his way received with a mildness that's betrayed by brewing apprehensions. He'll get to them in a bit. He will. Just that for now, he has to be certain.

Roland waits for Senku to finish speaking before his brow furrows, meeting in the middle. "You know what happens to Tidus if he takes his off, don't you?" Whether that was rhetoric or not is something he'll discover regardless. If Senku knew, then -

"I really hope you're not proposing he does that again. If that's where you're going, then I'll volunteer in his stead. He can't take his off ever again. No way." Not if Roland can help it.

"I know." Senku responded, it was a short and sweet response, but that suggested he potentially knew why.

"I was not suggesting that he take his SCA off, however, he wants to assume the risk under certain conditions. If the train remains, as a back up, then he wants to try." Senku sighed. "That's what he said. I don't know if when the time comes he'll still want to but that's his decision." That was what he had told him.

"I was suggesting to him instead that I assume the risk, of course. Gen is not going to have that, and I know he's going to help me by doing the same." Senku let out a little exasperated, fond sigh at his boyfriend.

"I asked Tidus who else to ask because we weren't sure about you, and I'm going to ask Inigo to do the same. Gen is a good volunteer, but we're from the same world. That's another variable. It might amount to nothing, it might amount to something. Because I can't rule out the usefulness of the experiment and we're flying blind, it might be worth doing."
adregem: (dammit we're getting caught.)

[personal profile] adregem 2021-01-22 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Roland's heard enough from the very moment his ears picked up assumed risks and controlled conditions. He's undeterred, even when Senku mentions that Tidus wasn't sure about Roland's involvement in it; in fact, spurred on by hearing Inigo dragged into the experiment too. Two people he'd rather not see in such a situation, but he had promised everyone he would try to weigh risk and rewards more fairly.

So when he speaks, it's abrupt and full of certainty.

"I'll do it. Tell him I'll do it. It doesn't need to be him, or Inigo if possible. I...I can't speak on either of their behalf but..." He shakes his head. Essentially, that is what he's asking to do, even if his words contradict the sentiment. Roland frowns deeply, his voice losing its lilt by a fraction.

"Please. Let me participate. Let me sub out for one of them. I can do it." The risk to him would be minimal. His existence didn't rely on the SCA holding him to reality. He wasn't a prince with the blood of an ancient dragon destined to save the world. Roland is Roland, a president in another life, but a regular guy more than anyone else. This, he's eager to suggest, meeting Senku's eye with a determination unlike any before.

"I won't discount your participation or stop you." Senku explained. "If it can help, the data is all the more valuable, but I also can't tell them not to." He sighed. "I can try, if you want, but they might still want to help."

Senku understood, at least, the sentiment. The desire to protect people, and he knew how much he tended to throw himself into these situations it was partly because it was the best way to gather data, but also partly because he didn't want anyone else to have to. How could he ask anyone to do anything he wouldn't do?

"Gen is helping because he wants to protect me." Senku said suddenly out of the blue. "He'd rather go first because he thinks he has to protect me, like I'm somehow more valuable than he is. I'm not. We're both just people. What traits I have...are shared with countless others. Maybe not in the specific configuration as they are in me, but the world would go on without me. It's the same for any person really." He huffed. "How insignificant we really are..." He mused, although that was a lot more philosophical in terms of sciences.

"I am not taking these risks lightly, and anyone who helps is deeply important to me, and not just as a test subject. I promise I'm not being...cavalier about this. If the potential benefits didn't outweigh the risks, I wouldn't ask for help."

But, he would probably still experiment, on himself.

So this is what it's like to be on the other end of the conversation, about risks and rewards and weighing each out as if its an exact science, not a decision made with consequences. How many times has Roland done the same to Tidus? To Inigo? This talk of it; it's turned things upside-down. He understands how alienating it can feel, for once in his life.

And it's that realization - that neither Roland nor Senku - can change the decisions made by two fully-grown men. It forces Roland to pause some, find his nerve. He isn't the type to say things if he's unsure of how it'll come out, or if he's second-guessing. Plus, if either of them find out he suddenly forced to put a stop to anything, it'll do more harm than good. They'd tell him off for certain; or worse, lose respect for him as someone who doesn't think they know what they're doing.

"...Just let me know what you would like for me to do." Is all Roland can say, steadily, as if he had not gone through the mental hoops to figure out if he's ready to see the results of such an experiment on two people he cares about on the train. "All I know for now is that I want to help."

He wasn't put off by Roland's quiet for a moment as he was considering. Senku's request was not at all something to decide on frivolously, after all, and he wanted people to consider the consequences. The inherent danger makes it risky.

"Okay." Senku said with a nod. "All I need you to do, is on the mission, with a partner, just remove your SCA. If nothing immediately dangerous happens, leave it off for a maximum of five minutes to see if that changes."

He relaxed his shoulders a bit. "I don't think it will change after the initial feeling, but you never know. Then just let me know what happened. That's it. We'll compile the data and then see if it yields anything we can know about."

Senku sighed lightly. "I hope we get some good data out of this."

Roland swallows thickly, but nods all the same. Instinctively, his hand drifts to where his SCA is wrapped tightly around his wrist, rubbing it as if he's already getting ready to perform the experiment.

"Got it. I'll let you know as soon as I can." A beat. "If it matters some, I'll try and do it on the next platform too. We used to...leave messages during those lulls in train activity. There might be something unexplored there for you too."

Roland wouldn't have agreed to this had it not been Senku to helm the experiment. Such is the trust he's already granted the guy.

[personal profile] 10billionpercent 2021-02-01 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"Since we aren't sure about the messages being safe, it might not be wise to keep doing, but..." He mused thoughtfully.

"I don't think it will be any less safe than doing it on the world." It was still dangerous, and he knew that.

"I will be doing it too. I appreciate the help. Let's see if we can figure this out."
