Fierce New World- Mission Start!

"Good Morning passengers. Today is day six of the month of Jelly." The voice echoes through the train as passengers wake up in their beds. Not long afterwards their SCA’s glow with the colour of the void and a holographic image will appear.

Preparation and Arrival

They have a short time to prepare for their mission, enough time to read their briefs, make decisions, meet in their teams and gather anything they may need.

A few hours later there is another announcement. "Shortly arriving on System #2207385. All passengers get ready to disembark. Next stop world #2207385. Exit from void in ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one."

The train judders as it leaves the void, the colours from the windows turn into the blackness of space but quickly white as the train descends into the entrance of the biosphere.

The doors of the train open and passengers can enter the large white-walled holding bay. Currently, they are the only vehicle inside. There are four large doors around the bay each labelled with where they lead. Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

The doors open easily, and their SCA’s show a basic route, though the non-linear nature of the sectors mean that obstacles will need to be navigated. While they are in a closed world, there is a day and night cycle: the panels far up above are designed to make it seem like there is a natural sky, brightening and dimming every ten hours.

Red/Summer

Empty Streets

Wide streets divide sealed-off factories and manufacturing pods that tower up towards the ‘sky’. It is hot here, though the fumes from the factories are vented out, leaving the air breathable if overly warm.

Sometimes the pods are not yet finished, empty shells that can be sheltered in. There are also stations for living, with plumbing and basic amenities scattered through the sector. Places to rest as they move towards the center and the Great-Summer that they seek.

Helpmates

Where factories are still being built they will find Helpmates, operating machinery or moving materials.

They will not pause in their tasks for long but are programmed to answer questions so can be drawn into a conversation. Or, if the Voidtreckers are unfortunate, they will find those that are malfunctioning turning on them as they approach.

They aren’t too difficult to fight, but can do some damage with the machinery if they manage to take a Voidtrecker by surprise. They can be fought with weapons or magic, or for those that think to use the panels they can be shut down outright.

Wild Weather

Though warm, the corridors remain a constant temperature that is not too unpleasant for people. For the most part. Unfortunately, due to the malfunctioning state of things routes may become impassable. Boiling air, freezing blasts, electricity crackling across a pathway.

Their SCA’s do a good job of warning them, allowing them to change direction or shelter in nearby buildings.

Purple/Autumn

Exploring

The Autumn sector is the least complete of the sectors, with shells of habitation pods and not much else. No one is expected to live here until nearing the end of construction, and so the pods are unfurnished, many missing doors, some missing internal walls.

Outside the streets are wide and clearly made to be pleasant to walk on; it is airy, bright and spacious, if a bit eerie due to the quiet.

There are panels on the walls, to call Helpmates to appear. Here they are primarily for helping citizens, giving directions and offering aid.

Malfunctions

Since there are more helpmates there is more risk of them malfunctioning. They attack with or without weapons, using any tools they can pick up to attack. They can be fought with weapons or magic, or for those that think to use the panels they can be shut down.

They won’t chase people into the houses, their privacy programming preventing them from doing so.

Turned Around

The roads seem simple, built in a grid pattern around the houses. However, whatever is going wrong here is affecting the very streets themselves. Sometimes there will be a wall where there wasn’t before or roads go in circles. Sometimes they find themselves at a dead end, trapped until structures shift again.

Their SCA’s do their best to keep up but it can take a while for them to reroute and by the time they do, that path might be blocked too!

Blue/Spring

Patchwork Forest

The Spring sector houses the hydroponics and pastoral sections. It alternates between grazing land and more heavily forested areas with rows of pine-like trees in a checkerboard pattern, with empty plots interspersed. Walkways divide each square, but all squares appear able to move about as required, as though on a conveyor system.

There are clear walkways to avoid stepping on any newly growing plants. In the grazing land live flocks of camelid creatures resembling alpacas with blueish wool, on average a metre and a half tall at the shoulders. Helpmates appear here as if on a timer to feed the animals and tend to plants.

Destruction

If the Helpmates here malfunction they attack anyone nearby, cause havoc to any farming equipment and frightening the animals.

They can be fought with weapons or magic, or for those that think to use the panels they can be shut down. The panels here are less obvious than they are in the more urban sectors, low to the ground, looking almost like energy panels. But once they know what to look for they will be able to use them to shut down the Helpmates.

Stampede

Frightened animals are likely to flee and unfortunately in this case it means rampaging across the grazing land to the newly growing trees.

They will need to be calmed, returned to their grazing lands and the plants restored. Or it might be that the Voidtreckers can stop the Helpmates before the creatures get too spooked.

Orange/Winter

Exploring

The Winter sector’s primary concern is life support. Huge banks of air scrubbers form artificial cliffs, while other sections are tanks filled with water in varying stages of processing or recycling.

The paths here are a lot narrower than they are in other areas, sometimes requiring moving between pipes or scrambling over layers of railing.

There doesn’t seem to be any easy or straightforward path through the sector, their SCA takes them on wild winding routes through the machinery.

Help or Hindrance

The fluctuating temperatures here are causing problems with many of the pipes, several sections are flooded, others are in danger of being so.

There are patch kits in easily opened panels, designed to be used by the helpmates and indeed there are many helpmates out.

But some are less helpful, those that are malfunctioning are more likely to cause more damage than they are there to fix. They will attack any one who tries to interfere with them. They can be fought with weapons or magic, or for those that think to use the panels they can be shut down.

Patch Job

Once the malfunctioning Helpmates are dealt with the pipes still need to be fixed. The patch kits do not have any instructions but are simple enough that anyone with a basic knowledge of how to fix things should be able to figure them out- though the more knowledge and expertise they have the better the fix!

For those that don’t, many of the jobs will need more than one person and so for those that don’t mind taking instructions they will find an extra pair of hands is always welcome.

"I suppose from an outside perspective..." Armor is ultimately a fairly standard part of having a shadow, and most people have them where she's from, but...

"Ah- certainly, it's not impenetrable! At the end of the day, a set of armor is only as good as the one wearing it- even a full suit of plate armor has its flaws. For the most part, the armor I have is simply part of making use of either the associated abilities, or my glove- though I've not had much chance to draw up a field in an actual fight..." she mutters with a frown.

"Truthfully, since these are all matters reliant on the mechanics of my own world, I hesitate to rely too heavily upon anything beyond the scope of myself though. I can still use the glove for necessary medical work regarding souls, but even that comes down to compatibility I suspect..."

....

"Ah...I rambled..." It's her area, her area..! She can't help it!!

The rambling only draws a smile of amusement from Roland, who is all too happy to hear her explain her powers and its setbacks. He thinks this not just as a team lead, but because it gives him peace of mind to know he can cover their flanks on a fight since he's more or less aware of where to help Yuume if she should find herself in a pinch.

"Well, you're not wrong. But I'm not too worried. You seem to know what you're talking about, and how to use your skills to the best of your ability. I'm glad to have your support on a mission." He reassures her confidently. Though of all the things she mentions to Roland, it's one particular line of thought he sort of hones his spotlight on. He hesitates for only a second before he speaks again.

"What...do you mean you can do medical work regarding souls, if I may ask?"

i'm sorry, roland....

Well at least he's taking it with a smile in that case then...

She really can't be surprised by that last question anymore though. "Ah- it's a job I have in my world; using this," Yuume explains, holding her glove, "I enter one's soul to handle matters of injury, or even division from their shadow. In the latter case, the mind's manifestation becomes opened up to the realms shadows originated from, and it becomes vital to replace what was lost- it's why I have so much combat experience actually. As a 'doctor', I need to be able to traverse these realms leaving minimal traces behind, affecting as little as possible- however, I have to still defend myself in those same actions, whether against the soul's own defense, or against what comes through the opening. Naturally, because of this, the technique is also used to determine if any general issues have occurred with one's soul as well- while natural matters reflecting on the psyche need to be handled by natural means, such as therapy, anything brought on by say, a curse, or other matters, would be handled from within."

Hopefully that made sense, or she's about to feel quite embarrassed.

If Roland grows quiet because of her explanation, it's not because anything she said upset him, or confused him even. Quite the contrary; Yuume's powers seem to have an unexpected resonance with Roland, his eyes staring intensely at her as if she had just told him the world has now stopped and they were the only two people left behind.

That's way too close for comfort. Her ability, soul diving almost, soul diagnostics - no, no that can't be right. How could that be possible? She's from another world, though. It's not unlikely that the magic - science? - behind souls and the relationship they can create with another is entirely unique to his circumstance. Their circumstance?

Besides, what good would knowing what Yuume is capable of actually do for Roland? Did he have some desire to explore that aspect of himself? He clears his throat before speaking up, calm, betraying the thoughts that refused to quiet in the deepest recesses of his mind.

"Issues with the soul, huh?" He swallows his doubts and decides, at the very least, this would be enough to satiate his curiosity on the subject. Then, back to the mission at hand. There would be time later, he thinks. He hopes.

"What counts as something in the soul needing to be repaired?"

me, literally playing through rolands game recently: `im so sorry dude`

Ultimately, she has no idea just how close to things she's striking- and more than that, she's so entangled in simply explaining matters she doesn't catch any intensity, or particular oddness about the conversation. By the time she likely could, Roland is calmly asking his question.

"Hmmm...there are a few matters," she begins. "The easiest answer of course, is if someone, or something has cast some sort of magic intended to affect it- perhaps twisting the personality, or binding one to another's control. Many things aren't necessarily so obvious, so such things can be more insidious than that- but at the very least, it leaves marks upon the soul. Other, more extreme examples however..." Hmm.

Ah, yes- Her face darkens a moment, but she explains all the same. "...I once tended to a patient who had been split literally in two; in order to sustain a blow intended to split the spirit in half, her shadow had divided their body into 'equal parts'. Unfortunately, while they're alive..." ... "...I wasn't able to return them to one being. It was the most extreme case I had ever seen, however."
adregem: (overthinking is a hobby right?)

OH NO!! this conversation is going to live rent-free in roland's head for a long time, yuume help

[personal profile] adregem 2021-02-13 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Roland has always prided himself on having a good grasp of his surroundings, and its that precise instinct to keep a cool head above water that saves him at the last second. Habitual in is desire to get the job done before he has time to overthink, though that might be futile since all he does is keep it to himself anyway, bound to implode into the pages of his personal journal in due time. This was going to be no different -

- except Yuume's words are like arrows into the very thing he knows so little about. The revelation of who Roland actually is, and how he didn't have enough time to process soulmates apart from his willingness to die on behalf of his people if that was what it took. At whatever cost asked of him, he would have paid it.

It's going to be difficult though, setting this aside for the mission at hand. It's already taking most of his energy not to pounce on what she shares with him - magic that binds another to their control; marks on the soul; more extreme examples.

Soulmates are extreme examples, are they not? Or as far as Roland could tell. But what did he really know? Earth was so paltry to magic, to all this mess he didn't understand and has yet to decode. As he rests his finger under his chin, the only thing he can say to Yuume afterwards is the most appropriate one that comes to mind anyway.

"What if one being's already been split into two halves? Can you...can you make them exist independently from one another?"

What am I asking her? What am I doing?
shadowslipping: (Saddened)

whomp whomp whomp....this could be really neat to pursue one way or another though ahaha

[personal profile] shadowslipping 2021-02-13 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
That.

...Is a fairly odd question to be asking, not that she points that out right off. For a moment she simply blinks- but, nodding slowly she decides to treat it as if he had asked literally anything else. "...I think I would need more information on that sort of matter, truthfully... ...A being split in two...the only case I encountered it, it was an extreme matter- rather than becoming 'two', they should have died on the spot. But in theory, if two beings bear individual souls, there should be a way to separate such a bond, yes. ...I would again have to do some incredible research on the matter, even within my own world however," Yuume warns seriously. "Injury to the soul is no light matter- the consequences can be fatal- or worse."

...

"But to be asking that sort of thing... ...What sort of matter is it that you're asking about, Roland?"

It has nothing to do with him, it's me. I just want to know. If I can...

Roland halts the thought, finally. One look beyond, four gates waiting to open for them, is all it takes to jolt him out of his reverie. This wasn't even what he expected to hear out of such a tale, but here was Yuume with answers to questions he didn't dare to ask himself even on a good day. That part of his story - the part where he attributes his whole existence to somebody else's - he doesn't think of it as often as someone else might. But the void does things to an idle mind. Experiences taint and color thought until they morph into the same chaotic field as the voidspaces outside their window.

Until such a moment Roland does find himself openly wondering if Doloran knows where his other half went; if he can feel him, if he feels emptiness or nothingness all at once.

And could Roland do it? Live as Roland without the tether to another world? Does he even care enough to do something about it?

There's no room for it. Not today. It makes matters worse that Yuume, the only expert he's ever encountered on the ancient magic of souls, doesn't know enough about his case. Not that she knows he's speaking about himself, but he's not being subtle about it either, is he? By design, Roland leaves such a question to hang and dry. He takes a few steps forward and earnestly lends his hand on her shoulder, grip light yet firm at the same time. Meeting her gaze with his own, colored with...worry? Or perhaps he's just determined to get the mission over with. It could be both.

"Sorry about this, Yuume. I'm distracting us from what's important. We've got a mission to get to before we start talking about stuff like this." A beat. His jaw tenses. "Though, if you have some time afterwards, I'd like to meet with you privately on this. There's no rush. I...I have some things I need to go over myself anyway."

Like why he's even giving this his time of day. Why it matters. Harmless in exploration, and yet -

He smiles, though it's not one that quite reaches his eyes. "Thank you for sharing your abilities with me. They're impressive, and I haven't even seen you in action. I appreciate the trust."

Yuume blinks, but ultimately nods. She's no mindreader- but it feels almost clear that something is weighing upon the other, something that will take far longer than just the time before the mission to clear. The woman ultimately nods, and offers a small- if not rather weak- smile. "All I did was answer your questions- nothing more than that," she insists, shaking her head. "But as it is, I would be happy to meet with you about this after the mission when you have time."

As for her abilities. "You're managing things as a team leader of sorts after all, even if I suspect many aren't necessarily taking it seriously- it would be wise to at least make it clear what you're handling, neh?"
adregem: GODTIER ARTIST PLEASE GO SEE HER WORK (two nations that beat with one heart)

Make it clear what he's handling, eh?

It's often easier said than done for Roland, but the gesture isn't lost on him. He appreciates the people who see him, even when he doesn't want to be noticed or has eluded such attentions from the beginning. He retains his smile, though it grows tighter by the edges, before letting her go and facing the gates of their mission, all four arches high and mighty by the distance.

"Thank you. For now...Onward to the Great Autumn."

He had a lot to think about after all this settles, though he supposes for him, that's just par the course.
