The Endless River

On the morning of day twenty one of the month of Kazoo there is a message on the ICP screens around the train. Their SCA's will light up the colour of the Void and show the following information.

World #398050 is a void nexus known locally as Tshering. As a void nexus this world has strong links with the void and the connection through worlds. World #398050 is home to the Endless River. Legends speak of this river being powerful enough to send thoughts from one heart to another across any distance. All that is needed is for you to know who it is you wish to reach.

On-board

The dressing carriage is open, filled with clothing best suited to a pleasant spring day. Light, airy and in a rainbow of joyful colours and florals. One closet is entirely filled with wide-brimmed hats bedecked with ribbons, feathers and ornaments. A stack of picnic baskets and containers filled with an alarming variety of passenger-suitable foodstuffs and flasked drinks sits in one corner, next to rolls of thick, weatherproof blankets in the four team colours.

The large box marked Do Not Use Yet, filled with small, empty jute bags, is hopefully still sat in the Luggage carriage, ready for passengers to grab handfuls of its contents as directed by the announcement.

Upon landing (after an appropriate countdown), the train remains on the surface, its carriages partially curved to form a gathering site for the day. Welcome to Tshering, the eighth void nexus!

A Day for Picnics

Tshering, system #398050, is a strange place, only habitable by grace of the passengers' SCAs. The sky is shot through with colours, a cascade of sunsets, and through it, the void shimmering through it in seams like a child's painting of the milky way. Still, there's a beauty to the chaotic mash of colours that soaks through its landscape, and in the shelter of the forests of towering funghi that dot its surface, the Void can go unseen by its visitors.

The temperature seems mild, suitable for the provided clothing, and if there are weather patterns around the world they've taken the day off. The funghi are sturdy enough that what air flow there is doesn't disturb their stalks, and carved grooves and holds in some of the larger examples indicate that climbing them to sit atop their glowing crowns is eminently possible, and, in fact, encouraged.

the Endless River

The Endless River is a font of pure chaos, flowing from a multitude of small rivulets across the area to a central reservoir, from which it pours directly upwards, away from Tshering's surface and out of sight, beyond the world's atmosphere.

Anything bagged and placed within the Endless River will also flow upwards and soon be out of sight, passing, presumably, into the Void. Scattered across the surface of Tshering are small, glittering pebbles, as described in the announcement.

The stones are pleasantly cool to the touch, and all passengers need to do is feel. Messages can be in any form that the Voidtreckers wish. Perhaps words, perhaps feelings, perhaps an image from their mind into the stone. Perhaps a mixture. Once they begin their message the stone will glow slightly and continue to glow as they secure it in the bag and cast it into the river. They will feel, almost instinctively, that they need to focus as they do so, thinking of the person they wish to reach all the while.

There are plenty of bags and many more stones; passengers will not be limited in their sendings.

"Look, I was just in prison on postal fraud charges? And that alone numbed me to it just because of temperamental inmate shit. Before the apocalypse even started."

You see enough people shanked, worry about it happening to you, you stop caring about people being killed outside of the times it's a massive inconvenience and the rarer time it's actually a friend. Even moreso when the zombies started.

(Murphy, understandably, doesn't have many friends. It's difficult to determine whether this is intentional or just a symptom of his deep personality flaws).

"I know they want people to fight for 'em but right now I just wanna feel as normal as I can. All two weeks of it before shit's due to go to hell." He says it in a way that there might be more wrong with him than just being red.

He snorts. "Well, I mean... helping people out in my city. Here is a different story. I'm just glad I got put on the team that gets sent in for the heavier fights. I can take a beating and keep going."

Hm. To tell him or not? ... Eh. A bunch of people know, it's fine. "I can't feel pain. Something with my nerves and my brain not getting the signal. Doesn't mean I don't need to heal, but I've taken some pretty terrible shit and kept going."

Normal, though... "Not totally sure what normal for me is anymore, but I'm being dragged into shit like board games by people I like here, which I think is probably more normal than a lot of stuff."

There's a couple of reactions that happen in him. One, it's jealousy. Because it hurt for so long. The process of change from the mauling through the entire first shed had been nightmarish and painful.

The second is that he might be able to fix that. Sometimes his inoculation rebuilds neural pathways. They stop and repair degradation in the infected if he gets to them before they're dead, and it could work on someone who wasn't even infected with HZ1. It would be a chance, but he's already seen how people treat things like him. And there are pretty heavy obligations on this guy's plate that he's sure he'd feel at the edge of his consciousness.

It's obvious, though, he thinks about something for a couple of moments, a full beat of him looking off to the side and rubbing his thumb thoughtfully over his lower lip.

But then he comes back out of the consideration, shaking it off. "Being dragged into Scrabble and fighting over it is the height of normal. Oh god how would Scrabble even work with the SCAs? I'm imagining I'd just look at the board and vomit from overload."

He doesn't interrupt. Whatever the guy's thinking about is whatever he's thinking about - he doesn't have to or even want to push.

When he's done though - "Uh. I don't know what Scrabble is. To me you're speaking Japanese. I'm guessing you speak..." Hm. He squints a little. "English? Maybe Russian?" It's not just the red, he swears.

Okay, that makes him laugh. "English. I'm American."

He actually guesses it's either the cheekbones or that he's pretty tall (not that Otoha isn't).

"Hey, if you ever want to look into the pain... thing. I'm sure it makes some stuff a lot easier. But I have a friend who talks out a cell phone that's pretty good with neural stuff. You might wanna try talking to him.

"While I'm sure not feeling your ass being beat has its advantages so does knowing when you're sick. Believe me. When I was a kid I caught everything." It makes being immune to whatever he encounters even funnier now.

Cheekbones and jaw mostly, yeah.

"We've met. He seems decent. ... Don't really mind it, though. Left me with a ton of scars, but it's also kept me from dropping in the middle of a fight. A lot of the fights I've been in, if you drop... you're dead." He's seen guys get hit after getting shot. It's never pretty.

"Try to check myself after fights. Medical on board makes sure I gt a checkup after missions." He really didn't need it at all this time, thankfully. "Had enough infections that I know not to just leave a wound. Never really got sick all that often otherwise." And he's not totally sure if he can get sick anymore. There's a lot of weirdness about being a Karas he still doesn't know.

"Luckily now I'm in a position that I don't have to worry about infections. My immune system's gotten a little boost."

But he is in a position where he will have to warn people to keep his blood out of their eyes an mouth, which sucks. Especially since he now knows either light or dark magical bullshit healing won't work on him. And he can only imagine how someone would react if he got something in their bloodstream and suddenly he was all 'surprise, psychic link' and everyone was like, Murphy, why didn't you warn anyone! Because it's complicated, okay!

Stupid bastard physical conditions.

"At least you made up for it in being healthy. And you look like you could break a guy over your knee." Without enhancements, even.
bakegarasu: (he's a cold hearted snake)

[personal profile] bakegarasu 2021-04-15 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Handy." Especially if the whole world's gone to shit. "But yeah, I've always been pretty strong. Training since I was young, and the natural advantage of being bigger than average. Some people I know are like walls... never been interested in that look. Speed can make up for a lot if you're talking about damage."

"Yeeeeaaah, if you were in family deep, that makes sense. I was a pretty normal guy until the Apocalypse. And even then, I spent a few months in such bad shape I had to rely on the kindness of strangers to keep me from being snack food. And by 'kindness of strangers' I mean 'people that were thirsty for bounty money'."

Come on, a Yakuza guy would understand people wanting a little cash payout for turning you in. Or supply payout. People were dead set on delivering him to yet another lab when he wasn't in a state where he cared much about humanity. Hard to care when you were surrounded by the anguish of their dead and the bullets of their living.

"Eventually everything worked out. I'm a lot better at taking care of myself, now." When he doesn't have a sword or a gun, he can make back-up.

"Yeah. I mean, I was born into it. I grew up in it, it's not like I just joined with my brother." Important distinction, really. "But yeah, I get it. Good thing you're able to take care of yourself... last two missions involved a bunch of fighting, though the amount depended on your team. I think some people can heal, but it's not everyone."
