What their Eyes See: Start
"Good Morning Voidtreckers, today is day five of the month of Llama." The voice echoes through the train as passengers wake up in their beds. Not long afterwards their SCA’s glow with the colour of the void and a holographic image will appear.
Preperation and Arrival
As usual they have a couple of hours before arrival to ready themselves for the mission ahead. As promised the dressing carriage is open for them to find suitable clothing. Trench coats, a lot of leather, a lot of black with neon colours thrown in here and there. There is a lot of choice in a variety of sizes so everyone is bound to find something to fit. Hopefully something they like, though some passengers may be more comfortable with the fashion choices than others.
A couple of hours after the announcement of the mission the voice speaks again. "Shortly arriving in system #93426194992. Arriving in ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one." The train shakes as it leaves the void, colours fading to be replaced to a grey thick smog outside the windows.
The train bumps slightly as it hits rails, snaking its way towards the city before entering a tunnel. A few moments and they come to a stop, the doors open onto a platform. Stepping out into the station the first thing to hit them is noise, it sounds like there are ten different advertisements blaring, someone or something is playing loud music. There's a lot of flashing signs, screens with advertisements, bright lights that change colour for no real apparant reason. Heavy on the senses as they make their way to the gates.
They will find that their SCAs allow them through the barriers and into the wider train station, which is somehow even louder. It is busy as well, people hurrying from place to place. There are signs declaring this to be Tier Three, Home of Manufacturing. as well as signs pointing the way to lifts, to take them to other tiers.
Tier One
Mapping
For those travelling up to tier one the first thing they will notice when they leave the lift is, it is a lot quieter up here. Peaceful even, there are people around, all looking official and busy. None will pay the Voidtreckers any mind unless they are acting particularly suspicious.
The air feels better here, probably because the whole tier is encased with a dome that they will be able to see as they enter, coming from a lift near the edge of the tier. The buildings are all harsh dark metal, almost uniform in design. The streets are clean and there has been an attempt at greenery with some shrubs and simple plants.
The buildings all need to be accessed using their SCA's. Their SCA maps show them where the buildings are but give no information about them, nor do they have maps of inside. Once the voidtreckers enter they will find that their maps fill in as they explore.
There are plenty of different buildings, offices, labs and meeting rooms. There are also a lot of security staff and anyone acting too suspiciously will be approached and questioned. Hopefully they have a plan, blend in or sneak around.
Flickers
Sometimes though that is a little harder, they might enter a room to find themselves on their old street, in a world they have visited before on the train or somewhere else that is decidedly not here. These illusions get more common as time goes on and people will begin seeing the illusions of others or find the two scenes merging together.
Voidtreckers who are immune to illusions will not see these strange visions and those who are particularly strong willed will be able to fight them off. Once people know they are illusions they can focus through them to see reality even if it is overlaid with what their minds want to see. It will take a lot of concentration to stay focused and get an accurate map.
Tier Two
A Mystery
The lift here brings them out into a glass covered corridor. Outside the glass the air is thick with smog but the filtration systems means that the air seems fine inside, especially with their SCA's helping out. Outside the tunnels they will be able to see the lights of hovercars zipping around and the silhouettes of buildings. Office blocks and large houses make up this sector. Large billboards blare out advertisements at all hours, neon lights shining through the smog.
The atmosphere of the sector is one of fear, people hurry about their business, keeping an wary eye on their surroundings. The newcomers won't get too much scrutiny but people are likely to be very wary if approached or questioned.
But they will talk once they guage them to not be a threat. Murders. Six people dead, from inside their own houses. Locked doors, security systems, all for nothing. Is it a serial killer? But the reports suggested an animal attack? From what animals?
Getting access to the houses will take some negotiating or breaking and entering. The bodies themselves have been cleared by law enforcement, caution tape still up to keep out any nosy public.
The rooms the bodies were found in were all rooms that used holograms as decoration and the voidtreckers will realise when they enter them that these holograms seem a lot more realistic than some of the others they might have seen in their stay in the sector so far.
Creatures
As they talk to people, or overhear gossip they will hear more about animal attacks. Someone swears they saw a lion prowling the streets. A hovercar crashed and the driver swore they had been attacked by an eagle. Neither of those creatures live in the city. Neither of those creatures exist on this world anymore.
But the Voidtreckers will quickly learn there is something to these rumours, especially as dark falls, the feeling they are being hunted. A paw tread, a tail disappearing around a corner. As days go on they may get attacked by a bear, a tiger or perhaps a creature from their own world, one that should not exist here at all...
Tier Three
A Crisis
Leaving the station brings them into crowded streets, air thick with smog, Up above them is the floor of the plate above, set with bright lights to offset the lack of natural light getting through. Billboards and screens blare advertisements, traders yell their wares. Life is fast and swirls around them as they step out into the streets.
Here also there is an air of worry. The talk is all of Spectura, kids unconcious after playing video games, hospital overflowing. Spectura's fault, there are calls for accountability, claims of sabotage. No person gives the same story and it becomes clear that most people don't know what has happened but almost everyone knows someone who has been affected. Fear, blame, tensions are high.
But life must go on, the factories never stop, people can't not work and with so many people unconscious people have to pick up the slack. The whole sector feels at breaking point.
If they try and buy Spectura systems they will not be stopped though they will need to sign a waiver, to take on all responsibility for what might happen to them if they go into the system.
Spectura
There are a whole range of games to look through, though the two most popular ones where the majority of players can be found are an open-world farming MMO called AgriTopia VI Ultimate, with bright landscapes and calming diegetic music, and Aegis Force, a tournament team shooter with short battle scenarios and smaller maps.
Those entering the system will fall unconscious in the real world and as they enter the problem will be pretty obvious straight away. Red vines, covering everything, tangling trees, creeping up buildings, coming straight for them to attack.
Anyone who gets overwhelmed by them will be stuck, unable to move or progress. It is possible to fight them off and for those voidtreckers who have faced the vines before they will find their soothing powers will work here as well.
People are tangled throughout many different games and once they are freed will need some help to find the next save point or exit. They need to help plant the final hundred potatoes, or team up to take down the level boss or solve the next puzzle, keep the vines away and free as many people as they can.
Tier Four
A Way In
As they leave the lifts they will find this tier is dark, dim lighting barely penetrating the smog. Homes are makeshift and all on top of each other. The streets are crowded, loud and people don't stop to chat. It is incredibly claustrophobic, with large support columns, exposed wires and large pipes running alongside and over the 'roads'.
Here there are plenty of stores selling anything and everything, certainly not above board. Credits are sometimes accepted but more often store keepers will prefer to trade in barters, food is popular. Anything that isn't nutri slime or the even worse unbranded basic version.
Bars and other seedy establishments are open all hours, neon signs beckoning. It is here that they will find the entry points to the fighting rings.
People don't talk about it openly but you look big enough, mean enough or dramatic enough then it will be slipped into conversation. Have you heard? Winners get a dream come true.
The fights are a mix of one on one and group fights. All terms are negotiated before hand with an overseer and fights are to the yield. The crowd wants a show and so dramatics are encouraged.
What was that?
The rumours about people going berserk are spoken in whispers. No one really knows what has gone on. A few fights have gotten out of control, a couple of fighters broke down after fights, at least one has quit for good. Most spoken about is The Crimson Fist. The best fighter in the ring who two days prior just left. Left the city with no protective gear, no word to anyone. No one knows what happened to them.
As the voidtreckers get further into their fights they will begin to realise something strange is going on. That opponent you are facing? They now look like your worst enemy, or perhaps your best friend, your lover. Sometimes you're no longer in the city but in a place of fond memories or your worst nightmares. Fights can very quickly go south when your opponent believes you their greatest foe.
Advancing the ranks now seems like it might be more difficult than first it appeared.

He nodded his agreement with Tidus. "I've heard a lot about you from their meeting before. Sorry I missed that. I'd love to pick your brain."
no subject
His eyes twinkled slightly as he glanced at Senku. "I'm certain there's a great deal many things that we're curious about ... but I'm just as certain you asked us to meet for a reason. I hope you're doing well."
It's possible she asked to meet not because she wanted to help them - but because she was in need of help herself. More probable, anyway ... Gen knew most people were motivated by their own needs.
no subject
But pleasantries aside, Roland knows they don't have the luxury of time. So true to form, he proceeds to cut to the chase as soon as Gen mentions it.
"Did you find out about anything since our last chat?" An anomaly... "We got the bio atmospheric scanners you mentioned, too. Thanks for the tip."
no subject
"Pleasure to meet you both, Senku and Gen." She beckoned them to follow as she began weaving her way through the crowds, seaking out a slightly quieter street so that they could talk as they walked.
"Ah useful, those atmospheric scanners can be a lifesaver, especially somewhere like this. Sorry about dragging you here but I'm glad it worked and that you got the message, void aid calls don't really have scope to give detail and I'm not sure if your craft is picking out the readings coming off the world, I didn't want you all coming in blind and getting caught up in the illusions."
Chiff beeped again as if in agreement.
"I put out some feelers about your situation, I might have a contact for you soon, someone who knows a little bit more. Mostly what I learned is something really worrying is happening. All over the void." She shook her head. "As for these illusions, I'm not sure if they are related to that at all but I've spent the last month chasing ghost stories. Buridian empire had two allied space fleets wipe each other out, the very few survivors swear blind they were fighting enemies. People walking into hostile environments believing it to be paradise, the list goes on. The earliest reports I managed to find were a couple of months ago and those weren't as big, whatever is happening it is getting more advanced."
She glanced at them, "Your team learned anything?"
no subject
So when she asks, he speaks. "One of the jobs here, this level - there's VR devices trapping people's minds inside them. Another planet we went to had that happen, a uh... Crysohale IV? V? It was a planet-space station being built. A bunch of us saw creatures when we got close to the computer running the entire place, but some people say they saw lights - and that's how the animals really look that're attacking us on tier two!"
It's more urgency than a raise in volume, a hiss to his words. He glances to the others.
"Weren't some people saying the illusions seemed like the ones on Erda too?"
But that's been a more confusing point to him.
no subject
“Whether or not our craft is able to pick anything out, I couldn’t tell you because it refuses to pass the information onto us. In fact, most of these missions it intends on sending us in blind and unprepared by design.” Senku frowned, looking miffed about that. “The last one was a catastrophic mission, according to its update afterwards, and it’s promised to warn us of that fact for future missions, but nothing else. Whatever readings it can or can’t pick up, we have no access to. I presume I’d see it in the engine car, but we can’t get into it.”
Senku seemed to think about that, and nodded at Roland’s assessment. “Yes, the atmospheric scanner should be helpful for my SCA experiments. I’m fairly certain it’s doing a lot more than we think it is, but I’m trying to figure out what.” He smiled slightly.
“As for the illusions, I’ve been up on Tier 1, so I’ve seen them first hand. They’re realistic landscapes or locations of places familiar to the one seeing it. Some of them can be shared with a companion, meaning we can see each other’s effect. I can tell you in a building where the effect is shared, it targets the first person to walk in the room. I did a little experiment.” He quirked a smile, of course he did.
“I’d go forward with a hypothesis that this may be related, but plan in case it’s not.” He sighed a little bit, thinking. “The virtual world, someone said it’s the same virus we encountered there.” He nodded in agreement. “And didn’t they also say they had the same skills as they were granted in the last virtual world?” Senku asked. “Which means there’s definitely a connection somewhere through the void.”
“But.” Senku was winding down a little for the moment. “I can tell you none of these things are or sound like the illusions on Erda.” He was shaking his head. “Those illusions were behavioural and memory modification illusions, meaning that it completely changed us at a base level. This is just seeing things. I’m not sure what caused the problems in Erda, and as far as I know, no one investigating found out either.”
He paused. “A request, Anan, if it’s at all possible – would you be able to get informational texts about voidcraft, the SCAs, voidsickness...anything like that? While the train gifts us things, it’s definitely blocking information from us.”
no subject
Of course, remembering what happened during the last mission's experiment, "We've had a fair amount of fun with illusions already. There wasn't a lot of investigation, that I could tell after the fact - people seemed to concentrate on the hostiles there, which were its own ketle of fish."
He hummed thoughtfully, glancing for a moment at Senku, then the others. "We're getting cherry-picked or censored info. Real resources would help a lot. Or at least it would give us more in-depth and complete treatment options for when we're stuck in a void-storm, or whatever else might happen."
no subject
There's something mentioned that does invite for more, so he follows it with a steady voice. "Erda was mainly under your supervision at the time, correct? You mentioned you frequently oversaw that planet. That's why they sent you back when they saw weird readings. Any conclusive results now that you've gotten a chance to catch your breath?"
He adds before the pause grows too thick -
"The murders in Tier Two were all inside homes utilizing holographic technology. They're commodities for the wealthy, but I think something's tampered with it. They've gotten way too real." And he only sees through them with a little bit of help, though that is a struggle in itself regardless. "The perp in question isn't even a standard wild animal let loose in the city. They're practically monsters, and they know how to stalk us like prey." Like it's with intention.
no subject
"I agree, they don't have the same draw as the illusions on Erda. I did not know you had been to another world with such illusions, some of your team said they had not seen anything like what happened on Erda before."
But then again, it was all subtly different. "What virus? A computer virus, that goes through the void? And skills from a virtual world?" She frowned, thinking for a moment.
"I can see what I can find for you." That was for Senku, as she tried to keep track of all the questions she was being asked. She smiled at Gen. "Perhaps it would be an idea, to write down what questions you want answered about voidcraft and I can try and find information for you, or answer the questions myself if I know the answer."
But back to the immediate problem. "I checked up on Erda again, they are recovering well. Whatever you did to help everything grow helped them immensely though there is still a lot of grief and pain for what they lost. But as for what happened. I am no longer getting those readings from the world, it's as if whatever was there is now gone. It was the same when I was chasing rumours, I'd get there after the fact and nothing registered as strange. I found this place almost by accident."
Chiff beeped and she looked over at Tidus. "Would you be willing to let me and Chiff try and connect into your teams comms?" She blushed slightly, "I tried to get in before but it was impossible remotely, your security is good."
no subject
But that's put aside when Anan asks what she does, a blink as he glances down at the bot in his arms.
"Oh, uh - sure?" he says after a moment, looking at the others, or as best he can as they walk. Though he slows, wondering if he needs to, twisting his wrist with his SCA on it. "What do you need to do? They're only online," he adds perhaps uselessly, "when we're on a mission."
no subject
He made a promise, and if something went south, Tidus had a different connection than the rest of them did in his own way. "That's not quite true, it's just the comms that are offline when we're on the train. The rest of the SCA functions are still operational. What are you hoping to gain access to?"
That seemed like a pertinent question. If it was useful enough, they maybe able to offer some other help.
no subject
There's just a briefest, so very brief glance of Senku - approving. His husband did remember, and he did keep his promise. If the little robot somehow fried something on his SCA, then the rest of them would be all right. And Senku would surely be able to fix anything that went wrong if it ended up being the same as taking the SCA off, in the worst-case scenario that Gen could think of.
Otherwise, he was focused on Anan and her robot friend. He approached Tidus and looked at Chiff, saying, "Hello there, little friend. You can climb up onto my arm or shoulder as you work - wherever you'll find most comfortable."
no subject
When the four of them eventually stop to perform Anan's quick experiment, Roland is half-listening and half-thinking. A finger rests beneath his chin in an active attempt to rearrange his thoughts into something more coherent, into something that makes sense with the bigger picture. Because there has to be one. And illusions, memories, and false realities hit too close for it to be some floating coincidence. If anything, Anan's recollection validates what they've all experienced in varying degrees...
That other thing too; the only one to force the train's hand time and time again...The one thing they can't get a single clue on, apart from what it looks like. What it can do.
As Chiff clambers onto Gen's outstretched limb, Roland attempts to better focus. He keeps his eyes on both man and machine, studying every movement closely. Not now, not when this could lead to another discovery.
"What exactly are we expecting to happen as soon as you connect?" He eventually asks.
no subject
Chiff hopped from Tidus to Gen and wrapped metal arms around Gen's arm as the front two prongs hooked onto his SCA.
"He should be able to add me into your contact lists and give me access to the communication relay you are using. I promise I won't go any deeper than the comms. Not sure I could anyways."
She was tapping away on her own SCA as she spoke, "I've hacked into government systems with less security than this."
no subject
"Well if you're into hacking, you done any to know what's up here?" It's a joke, one that's not allowed to settle when- "Actually...what else would the SCA show? All that comes up for us is, uh... a light, music...a timer? And the mission jobs and map we have. Don't think any of us mind sharing those with you."
At least, the jobs.
no subject
"I know." Senku addressed Anan. "From what poking around I've done to the ICP on board as well, whatever the locks are, it's not a language I'm familiar with and despite my ability to read patterns, I haven't found one as of yet." He pressed his lips together.
Senku shook his head a little bit at Tidus' explanation. "That's all we see, yes, but the SCA definitely reads more than that. The translation function, the customized warning system, it definitely reads our vitals as well, among other things. There's more information inside of it, we just can't see it."
He addressed Anan again. "If this doesn't work, I have another idea. If you are able to do repairs..." His hand went behind his back, so he could use the arms band out of sight, just in case someone did happen to see them and he held it out to her, to show her the broken SCA.
"I looked inside already, there's nothing remarkable to be seen, but also most likely the internal components aren't damaged and it's all in the screen. It doesn't presently function, but as I can't get information on how to repair it, it's not serving me much use."
no subject
Nodding absently at the others, Gen agreed, "Maybe you'll be able to find out more from the busted one - or maybe it's well and truly busted. Doesn't hurt to look, though, hmm?"
He glanced over to Anan. "Why not poke a little more deeply? It might not end well, but it is the reason you're poking around on my SCA, instead of someone else's. Perhaps we could even connect to the train like this. If it's an, hm, what is that term in the movies. A backdoor?"
no subject
"Connecting to the train itself isn't a bad idea, but be careful if you try it." He adds, arms crossed over his chest. "Pretty sure it's common knowledge by now that the Voidtrecker isn't run by a someone. It is a someone." Or so they're led to believe, straight from memory island itself way back then. He could be proven wrong, but he has no reason to believe otherwise.

Anan was also tapping away, listening to the conversation as they spoke. "I can try, though you've got pretty good security. I'll try and see if I can repair that busted one as well, never know when you need a spare."
She could have done with one on Erda, that's for sure.
She raised an eyebrow at Roland. "You really don't know..." She winced. "Sorry that sounded rude. I mean, even though I know you all come from non void active world it's still difficult to understand that you don't know things. Is the Voidtrecker a person? Is a voidcraft a person? A machine? Something that is neither? Both? It's a question that baffles much greater minds than mine. Void philosophy."
She made a sound at the SCA, tapping buttons with a small hiss.

"Can we trick it?" Maybe a weird place to start, and he sighs quietly, conceding already- "Well, I don't know tricking it, but - we have this feedback post, and it's listens to some of it. Is it like, I dunno...if we say stuff to it, does it learn from that? Can we get it to think we're on its side?"
If all voidcrafts were, well, weird.

“I think it believes that already.” Senku responded to Tidus. “We do its missions.”
He seemed to think, tilting his head a little. “But any suggestions as to how to deal with the voidcraft itself would be very welcome.”

He shrugged a little and looked apologetically at Anan. "And that's also assuming the train we're on is sane, for some value of that word when applied to voidtrains. How or why it's sentient doesn't seem relevant - but it does appear to be a little, well. Crazy."
Absently, he pet the little robot as it hacked into the SCA and he spoke to the others. "And people who aren't sane aren't very predictable."

Is it a person? A machine? Neither? Both? He hides the click of his tongue against his teeth but moves on to Chiff, resting his gaze upon it as it whirrs in its work.
"Is it putting up a good fight?" He asks her, peering a bit closer over Gen's shoulder.

She tilted her head, "Perhaps, you do all seem an... eclectic group of people."
She cursed at her screen and nodded at Roland. "Yes, but I'm nearly there. Your craft has a lot of security, wherever it comes from originally sounds more high tech than my own world."
She went back to pressing buttons and hummed. "Voidcraft, sentient or not as the case may be are pretty attuned to the... mood I guess, of their crew. I'm afraid it knows you more than you know it."

"But, uh...I mean, if it's got a better idea of how we feel than it acts, then sure, it knows I don't like it." He's made that plenty clear. "But it has started to let a few details out... I don't know if that's because of us or some other reason, but." He looks at Senku and Gen, chewing on a thought before he looks back at Anan at work.
"If it's reading our moods...would it be reading everyone's? 'Cause I mean, overall... it's not like everyone's unhappy. People are even getting together in the train." And that he shares with a light shrug. "Some people like being friendly with it."
Would it be that suspicious, to try and keep prodding it?
