No Place Like Home: Outside
NO PLACE LIKE HOME: OUTSIDE
HOME SWEET HOME

You're somewhere familiar, or just - the last place you remember being before your life became tethered to the Voidtrecker Express. A field, a city, a kingdom, or perhaps even a space station. You should be nowhere, yet you find yourself somewhere, despite all odds.
People - if there are people - don't at first notice you; but attract enough attention to yourself, and that will all change. Friends, family - are they near, a phonecall away? It's either everything you wanted or everything you imagined (for good or worse), and it could seem unbelievably real. But it is real - you're off the train, back somewhere you know.
...If only.
You're moving away from where you arrived, for whatever reason. Who wouldn't? You may be far from home, have business elsewhere, or want to go sightseeing. It's time to return to - and live - your life, and that doesn't include sticking to one place.
But you'll find that when you reach a point, the world becomes...foggy. A fog that you hadn't seen in the distance before it appears, and when you walk through it, you'll find yourself in a place some have already found themselves in.
Because for some passengers, there was nowhere for them to return, and so the barriers lead only to fog, and then straight back onto the platform. The Voidtrecker Express may be stationed, or there may be a blanket of fog where it should be; sometimes, it can be caught trying to leave the station, only to come back a few minutes later. The doors are shut tight, and the windows are obscured, showing nothing inside.
Those who came from somewhere can go back, should they go through the turnstiles again. And if they want, they can take people along with them, too...
But sometimes, they go to a world no one knows. They go through the barriers into nothing, a black emptiness. Not space, for those that know space, and it doesn't seem to be the void either. But it is a void, devoid of anything at all. Just a darkness so complete they will not be able to see anything at all, they will only know their companion is there through touch and sound. How they are breathing, how they are living at all, is a mystery; one probably answered only by the SCA on their wrist.
Being there brings an unease deep down inside them. This place is not natural, not somewhere that they should exist in. Not a place that should exist at all. Luckily they are never there for more than a few moments before they return once more to the station, fog covering them like a safety blanket.

A DIFFERENT CORNER: LOCATIONS
In the first couple of days (whatever that means, when time doesn't match up between most places), the only way to move to another's tethered location is by them leading another there. But after that, individuals will show up in other locations when they reach close to the distance limit. Indeed as time goes on everything gets a lot less stable. They may know their five miles perfectly but still one step to another leads them back to the platform. Attempting to return to their world leads them somewhere else entirely.
And there's quite a few places to end up.

OOC NOTES
OOC post. Ask questions here.
LOCATION TOPLEVELS: Since it'll be easier for players to engage with settings presented by those offering them, when we see a toplevel for one of the above locations put up, we'll add it to the list! We've also included the OOC comments for settings to the side, so any questions can be left with the player, as well as extra details. Please always speak with the player first if you intend to do anything drastic to the setting!
A REMINDER: Time of log is Poi 22-25, but time within worlds can last up to a maximum of two weeks. Minimum is whatever you want it to be.
During Poi 22 and 23, characters will need to be led to a location to be able to access it. From Poi 24, people will show up in locations regardless of invitation.
The second half of the event will go up during 20th to 25th February (Poi 26-28). But as always, play around in here and do as you like!
If your character's setting isn't above, link us to it in the Questions post, along with your toplevel! We'll add it.

Thanatos and Zagreus seem to take these things as their due. This is how things have always been. This is how they will always be. Change is for mortals. As if the Olympians aren't infinitely changeable, capricious even. As if it is their lot in life to die hundreds of times, to be shackled to a job that leaves them so little time to themselves. As if being looked down upon is just how things are. Nothing changes until someone says something. Perhaps this will change nothing. Perhaps it will change everything. But she's learned that nothing changes standing still and quiet and obedient. Zagreus knows that much.
Persephone steps into the slightly brighter light in front of Hades. He is imposing, as all rulers tend to be, several times her height. But she's so tired of being intimidated by men who are taller and older than her. Her eyes, red and piercing, look up at him.
"Hades." And when she has his attention, she begins, "I am Persephone, Goddess of Spring," And there's the slightest pause, "Bringer of Death. And you, you have been a terrible king."
He got a message from Perse, right?
Hades puts down his quill and looks down upon this pomegranate pink goddess who introduces herself as.... It's faint and hardly noticeable, but Hades shifts how he sits, how he looks at Persephone. "Shades, dismissed. Court will reconvene later." His gaze turns steely when they don't immediately disperse back to where they came. He pounds a fist to his desk. "Begone!"
That gets the shades to leave. Orpheus makes himself scarce as do the House Contractors. (They might have taken refuge in the lounge.) Achilles stands more in view in case any try to enter the Great Hall from the Administration Chamber.
With a grumble, he returns his attention to Persephone. "You're from that train."
yup
"Yes, I am." Persephone adjusts the way her skirt falls, as if his questions are boring, not requiring her full attention. If she's honest, it's a move she'd seen Hera use. Then she looks back up.
"Honestly, I do not understand the way you choose to rule. Are you king or are you not? Do you have the well beings of your subjects in mind or are you just a tyrant? Because the way you let some in your care languish is truly awful. Perhaps Zagreus has gotten used to being called trash for the blood of his grandfather, but you're the one letting them speak to your son this way. Perhaps Thanatos is used to being forgotten and taken for granted, but you're the one who does it. Not to speak of the lies you let perpetuate."

"You may think me cruel, but I bring order to this realm. Meanwhile, that blasted boy will bring ruin upon this House. His actions have already managed to corrupt even the best of my--" Hades nearly says more, but he cuts his sentence short and reconsiders his words. There is a line even he fears to full cross when he is unsure of how justifiable it is. Something has made him question his actions, inactions, whether he'll admit to any wrong doing or not.
"Were it only him alone facing the consequences of his foolishness. His place is here in this House."
no subject
"Oh no, go on." Even her voice is a little different, a strange quality to it.
"Go on, Hades. Tell me how your son is the one corrupting beings by caring for them. Because if you want to know who 'corrupted' Thanatos, who changed how he thought about you and this world, that was me. And if I had had my way, both of them would be in my world, not yours. I have shown them green fields and kindness, I have cared for them more in this past year than you have in your lifetime."
She thrusts a finger towards him as she speaks.
"They may live and work in your realm, but they are my people. And you're the one who should watch what you say about them in front of others."

It's the look in his mother's eyes as they meet each other's gaze that makes Thanatos worry. His graceful mother does not know how things will play out nor which side she may have to take. Persephone is an unknown factor in this battle of words. And so is he, Thanatos realizes. His mother doesn't know how he may side because he's no longer the same. She doesn't know him as she once had... as she thought she had.
Hades lets Persephone talk without interruption, but as soon as she finishes, he speaks. "Hypotheticals mean little. You're young and not bound by responsibilities. As you grow older, you'll be bound by more and more, so enjoy that freedom while you still have it."
He takes the stone and stows it away to some darkened part of his desk. "However, some of us have no choice about what we must do and where. It's a cruelness from the Fates to entertain the idea of something more."
no subject
Her voice drops, a power thrumming through her. Her hair starts to creep over her shoulders now, getting caught in the growing wings on her back. Green life is also peeking from the cracks between tiles, around the edge of pillars and doorways. It clings as it climbs and grows.
"I have had responsibilities and I have walked a path so tight and narrow that I almost ruined my life to be free of it. Do not presume that because I am young, that I am still just Kore. I am not and will not ever be that child again. You know nothing about me," There is a pause, "But I know plenty about you."
The audience is forgotten. A world beyond her and Hades. She forgets that Thanatos is listening, that his mother is there, that Zagreus could appear from that river at any moment. Her anger blinds her.
"I know your realm fears you. I know you let them treat your son like trash and you do even worse. I know you let a child do the work of an grown god, let him be kidnapped, and only found him when your realm was affected. And I know you let Persephone think her son was dead. And you tell yourself it was because you were respecting her wishes but really you were just treating her the same way everyone treated me. Like Demeter treated her. You never gave her a choice with all the information, you hid things from her because to actually speak up and use your words to apologize and explain would be beneath your pride and your dignity. Because telling her would be hard and it's much easier to take out your anger and sadness on Zagreus and Thanatos and all the other beings in this realm."
no subject
Upon hearing the name "Kore," Hades slams his fist to the table in a brief flash of anger, though it quickly fades to a simmer. "I will not hear that name in my House. She hated being called that, and I would never refer to her or you using that name."
It's strange to think that he's more angry about the use of that name over Persephone's accusations. Maybe because some of it he's heard before in greater detail from the two gods themselves. The accusations are nothing new to him.
"There is no changing what's already done. She made her choice to leave and to go unseen by the Underworld or Olympus. I respected that. It's more than those on Olympus ever did."
no subject
But her anger wells right back up. How dare he scare her?
"I'll call myself whatever I like, thank you very much! Did you listen to a word I said?" Persephone slams her own hands down on the desk now.
"And congratulations. You're better at giving a woman choices than Zeus. I'd give you such a pat on the back, if I didn't think that bar was on the floor." She pulls back, crossing her arms, "Making choices without all the information is--it's not fair to her. Or to Zagreus. You don't think she would have made different choices if she'd known that he lived? Do you think she wouldn't think it's a punishment for leaving that you never sent even a letter, even a scrap of paper to tell her that her son lived? There is so much in our lives that has been held from us. Schemes played around us, lies told in the name of protection, of love."
Her shoulders soften as her arms drop, then raise up to gesture around them.
"There is darkness here. But there is also family and friends and respect. She could have loved it here, with your family, with the shades, with a garden and flowers and visiting the world above when the darkness is too much. She could have returned to a place of her own, a son, a court. But you never gave her that choice. Does she even know what Mother did to the world?"
no subject
Hades grimaces and turns aside once he realizes he had startled Persephone. Despite her not being his Queen, he is loathed to make her feel any less of herself. When he speaks, his tone is much more controlled. Still, he does not look at her, as if that would make amends for his earlier outburst. "I do not know where she is. By the time Nyx revived my son, she was lost to us. Not even Hermes would be able to relay any message. That is what she wanted."
Nyx glides forward. Despite her height, she seems to command more presence than the desk she stands next to. "The reason no message could be relayed to the Queen is because my power masks her location, and I cannot betray her by removing that protection. She is lost to all in the House, to Olympus, as Lord Hades says. Zagreus could only deliver that message himself." Nxy cants her head slightly. She can't say much more on the matter without revealing what allows Zagreus to be an exception, and perhaps she has already said too much.
Hades regains his imposing presence. "The fact that the boy reached her once is enough. He'll put this whole realm at risk should he try to again."
no subject
Her sympathy, her small kindness, deflates as she takes in these two old gods. So old, so many more years on this world than her. And yet, so--so set in their ways. So ready to make a mess of things for their own reasons. Instead of anger, instead of fury, there is just a quiet sad disappointment.
"Clearly you betrayed her enough to allow Zagreus through. Once or more than once. I could have swore..." She turns her head slightly as if in thought, then shakes her head. It's probably time nonsense.
"I'm so tired of beings who make everyone else deal with their problems. You--send a note with Zagreus. Stop killing him to keep him from her, she wants to see him. The door is opened, the way is there to speak to her, use your brain and put pen to paper to tell her how you feel, how you screwed up."
And then she turns to Nyx, "And you--it was immensely kind to help her. I have a friend who would do such things for me, basically no questions asked. But he would still give me information that I need. He wouldn't leave me alone without a clue of what had happened, wouldn't let me find out however many years later that my son lived and everyone thought I wouldn't give a damn about him. You are also a mother. Do you not care for your children in the slightest? Do you not think that the grief that drove her from this realm would be lifted in the slightest by his rebirth? No?"
Persephone takes a deep breath and runs her hands through her hair. Her hand snags on a petal and she mutters, "Sugar snaps."
"I'm going up. I heard there were fields." Unsaid is the implication that his realm better not fight me on this journey.
no subject
However, when Persephone mentions her own children, Nyx does not need to glance in Thanatos's direction to know that he is not looking at her now. She has done things to separate herself from her children, to help them grow and to be independent. Some of her children are no longer a part of her life unless outside circumstances push them together. But earlier, Thanatos had accused the both she and Hades so passionately, and she feels some guilt, regret within her. All the same, he does not know what she, his grandparent, and his elder sisters did. Nyx keeps her secrets. The Night veils in darkness.
It is Hades's gruff voice that breaks their silence. "You may leave through the Queen's Garden if you wish." Hades points towards a locked gate down the hall. "Should you require an escort to show you the way, I will assign one to you. However, none shall harm you."
no subject
"Sorry I got so loud Than." She holds out her hand to him, unsure if he still wants to take her anywhere with the literal and figurative mess she's made.
no subject
He can't shift the both of them to Asphodel, but he can try to guide her there on foot. Or by floating as they both can do.
"I was loud when I first returned here too."
no subject
Her small smile, Thanatos speaks, is fond. She squeezes his hand, gentle, and starts walking. Or floating really, in her case, since hand in hand requires some lifting off the ground on her part.
"Really? I'm sorry I missed it." Her eyes are still blood red and her wings are as obvious as big sets of branches can be, but the petals are falling from her hair.
no subject
"Zag missed it too. He had already left for his mother by then."
no subject
"I'm sure he'll be upset he missed both of us yelling. Though I'm not sure he ever wanted me to meet Hades. Do you think I could make it up to the mortal realm?"
no subject
"Maybe if you could make it to wherever the Queen is. I don't know if it's in range or not." Thanatos sighs and looks upward. He's never been there. He only knows what it looks like because of an illusion Zagreus was lost in once.
"I tried to shift to the surface to collect those passing right now, but I ended up back at the platform instead. My presence allows the mortals to die again for Charon and Hermes to guide, but I can't help further."
no subject
There's an exit right? Honestly, Persephone isn't sure how the Underworld to mortal realm space works from the mortal side. Not here. Not in her world.
As they reach the entrance to the garden, Persephone hesitates before the doors. Oh maybe she should leave this space to get other self. Or maybe she'll appreciate it too.
"Is it weird to want to meet her?"
no subject
"It makes me wonder if my mother swore to the Queen that no one working for the House would be able to find her. To be able to block even that from me. I know Zagreus has been leaving through the Temple of Styx, but I don't know where he goes from there. But maybe you'll be able to find her, or maybe she'll sense you and help that way."
