No Place Like Home: The Return

NO PLACE LIKE HOME: THE RETURN

a silence broken...
It's been a very difficult few days. Rocking and rolling into the void and out again. Watching their friends out of the window as they wander from world to world. Meanwhile those lost on worlds continue to wander unable to return to the train at all.

"All attempts at returning those who left have failed. This voidcraft cannot do it alone. It is lucky that unlike those that have left before them, I can still sense them.

But I cannot bring them back alone. This is perhaps too advanced for Voidtreckers, but you have done the improbable before. You say you wish to help. This is how you help."

Their SCA's light up with a message. Or rather, a series of instructions:
In the unlikely event a tether gets stranded on a liminal space platform or between their own world and the platform space, you should, in the first instance, contact the Void technicians who monitor their non-travelling self. However, in the case they cannot be reached or there is a mass displacement of tether, an anchoring procedure can be carried out.

Ideally, this will involve two fully tethered individuals to retrieve the lost tether. One should be a stationary anchor. They should be outside of their void craft, if possible, and in physical contact with it. The second should be a roaming anchor reaching to draw the tethers back. In situations of mass tether displacement the stationary anchor can hold mutiple roaming anchors but it is recommended to not exceed five. In this situation, it is recommended that anchors rotate between stationary and roaming.

To start an anchoring of this kind, those anchoring should activate their anchoring program. Those staying station should reach out to the tethers of those they plan to steady. This might cause some emotional upheaval, and they will need to stay steady, especially if connecting to more than one roaming tether. Roaming anchors then must hold the person they search for in their thoughts and move towards them. It is recommended that the lost tethers activate their emergency beacon to facilitate being found and returning but this is not a necessity.

Once the roaming anchor has found the lost tethers they must keep hold of them and guide them back towards their craft, the stationary tethers must draw them back, pulling them through.
There is an additional note at the end, in different font.

It is as Anan told you. Your minds should visualise it. Be strong Voidtreckers.

... a short-lived dream
The doors open and anyone who wishes to try this can leave onto the platform. It is empty, devoid of the figures they had seen before; and, beyond the fog, devoid of anything. But searching requires their SCAs, not a path, and as people get into teams, they can activate their anchors and begin.

For those who will roam, their minds become filled, visualising light, void, voices and chaos; their bodies feel less stable, like they might unravel if not careful. But for those who will stay, when they touch the Voidtrecker Express, they will feel more stable, grounded. The fog shifts, but the world moves around them without pulling them in.

Thinking of the person they wish to keep stable, a mental and emotional link will be established, and they will feel each other as the roaming anchor sets off to find their missing crew.

Outside the train...

For those that had left - either by choice or by strange happenings - they have found themselves back at their anchor point during Poi 26, regardless of where they were before. For those unfortunate enough not to have a world to return to, or those who were stuck between in the first place, they will find themselves alone, in a fog filled space where no matter how far they walk, nothing greets them.

All those in fog or back in their world receive the same message from their SCAs.

Hold fast. Press your evacuation button. Your friends come.

RETURNERS: FLEETING HAPPINESS
But it's likely before the message arrived, that something wrong has been noticed by those outside the void. More than the bizarre ability to travel between existences, an inability to move far from where they appear. Back at their anchor points, they may notice - in time - colours sometimes flash across the sky, streaking through clouds or making trails in a night sky. At first not much, something to be easily dismissed but it builds. People talk, wonder at what is happening.

For the colours aren't the only thing. Across worlds, in cities, kingdoms, villages, underworlds and space stations, people are dreaming. Bright colours, vivid dreams. Prophets spring from nowhere, people claim to know the future or to have seen the past. Some talk of places and worlds they could not have seen.

Perhaps at first it can be explained away, there are always such people. But more people talk, from urchin children to commanders, people dream and the colours dance.

ANCHORERS: A STEADY HAND
While the stationeries will feel grounded, they aren't blind to what's happening to their roamer. It's as if they're both linked, intimately, meshing together, and they will need to work to keep their feelings separate; hearing each other's thoughts, their feelings. Images of what the other thinks and memories shared between them.

And then there is the search for their teammates, amongst the multiple of realities. Existences move past the roamer, threatening to lose them in the mess, but they must persevere, keep their thoughts on the individual, their stationary anchor to help them. Until finally, they appear - in a world they perhaps know, don't, the kaleidoscope colours of the void faint above their heads.

Speak to each other, keep each other focused, certain, and find who you came to save.

BOTH: HOLDING ON
Searching for individuals, the anchorers will find themselves at a character's anchor point; if they haven't moved far from here or another world, it will be easy to locate them. Now is the time to convince them to come back, and then the eventual work of doing so.

It can be in agreement, or force. Taking a hold of the person, the anchorer can pull them into the mass of chaos. Just like when they helped the guests return to their worlds from the false Diagad, all parties become battered by images, voices. Voices like sirens; 'Just stay,' the voices encourage. 'Just let go and drift into the chaos. It will be easier.'

But they must be strong, move towards their anchor and towards the craft. The crossing doesn't take too long, perhaps ten minutes each way, and once they get to the craft the person they are rescuing glows gold and vanishes. The anchors will know instinctively that they are safe on the train.

And indeed, the rescued will find themselves within the luggage carriage - exhausted, but safe.

TRAIN: AN INEVITABLE RETURN
Exhaustion is something all parties will experience, once everyone is returned to the train and the adrenaline wears off. Those who anchored will be hit with a total exhaustion, leaving them unable to do much more than eat and sleep for a few days. Those rescued won't be as bad, but if they decide to join in with the efforts, they'll too face the soul-tiring experience that other anchorers are.

There's likely to be efforts, to help soothe people over this time. And as people return to their life on the train, they will see the marks of the last few days for those who stayed behind. Broken ceramics, books out of order in the library; the ICPs in the standard coach, storage, sports and games carriages broken, and some damage to furniture.

But for the scars brought on by this event, surely, they will heal - eventually.

OOC NOTES
OOC post. Ask questions here. New second part OOC post here.

First phase of the event took place during Poi 22 to 25; the second phase takes place during Poi 26 to 28 (20-25th February).

VISITING WORLDS: While during Poi 26, it will be possible to go back to wherever they were, or other spaces. However, they will have increasing difficulty doing this, and will feel themselves getting more lost if they try world hopping too much over the next 3 (void) days. It's like something is trying to pull them back, or pull them, but into nowhere.

SCAs: The SCA's comms will not be active at this time.

1. for jiu
Kyoko has absolutely seized dibs on rescuing her roommates. There's no way to dress it up in anything other than the truth: She wants them back. She wants back the normalcy she's found in them, that she hadn't even realized she'd gotten attached to until it was gone. And she doesn't even feel like she has to feel selfish about such thoughts, because being here on the train is better than being stuck out there in the void, or whatever the hell else could happen to them out there.

So she grits her teeth against the tiredness threatening to creep into her bones and dives out into the void again, this time firmly holding in her mind thoughts of the fox-boy. She'll bring him back. She is determined.

2. for vegeta
It's done. There are still people to save, but the rest of the Voidtreckers are working on that. Kyoko has pulled back four of her own -- four... friends -- and discovered two more that made it back without her. She would throw herself back out there again, even for people she doesn't know, but... She can't fight it any more. The toll of anchoring has come calling, and it's impossible for her to keep staving it off. Her job is done, she's clocked out.

But she refuses to succumb to the sleep that's calling her yet. There's someone she feels like she owes. Vegeta's been there through it all -- He's helped her bring her people home back. She'd seen him around the train before this, of course, and known that he's friends with Yondu, but she'd never talked to him before all this. But when she saw his attitude about this anchoring business -- the closeness required of their minds -- She knew that's who she wanted to work with. If Yondu trusts him, then she can trust him, and if he's cranky about the intimacy of it, well, he'll be in good company. Kyoko wants to be better at expressing herself, but she didn't like the idea of having to connect with someone like this. But it was a cost she was more than willing to pay to do what needed doing -- To do what she wanted to do.

Kyoko searches the train for him, holding a plate of food in each hand with two drinks tucked into her jacket pockets, hoping he hasn't retreated to his cabin yet. The least she can do is bring him something to eat.

3. for sylvia
The cabin is starting to feel better now. It's been downright fucking eerie -- Kyoko knows there are cabins that aren't entirely full as the norm, but she's never been in one. And this cabin in particular... Any time Kyoko has spent in it during all this, she couldn't help but think about the people who should be in those empty bunks.

But fox-boy is back, and Sylvia is back. Yondu, Elidibus, Idia, and Nozomi are all home back on the train, too. It's... It's going to be okay. Yeah. She can finally start to feel like it's going to be okay.

And as the urgency and adrenaline fade, the exhaustion settles in. And in the middle of the day, Kyoko finds herself so tired that she doesn't really want to climb up into her own bunk. So she ends up flopping onto Sylvia's lower bunk instead, arms sprawled up over her head. But, even as much as she could fall back asleep... She's hungry, too. So she goes fishing around in her pockets for something to snack in.

Better hurry, Sylvia, or else someone's going to end up eating in your bed.

4. wildcard, aftermath
Exhausted or not, Kyoko doesn't want to curl up in her cabin. She wants to be out in the carriages as they fill up with life again and return to the normal hustle and bustle. It's easy to turn around, in any populous carriage, and find Kyoko in a seat, snacks in hand and just people-watching, or outright passed out asleep right there despite the noise.

It had been a confusing month, or was it only a few weeks? Either way the experience had left Sylvia conflicted and tired. Sure she had managed to see some familiar faces but there were still absences, and the gaps in the timeline seemed to have taken their toll. For a little while, she had thought she could return home and ease her family's worries about her absence but it was temporary, and nothing was really solved. Plus, she couldn't imagine why when her father must have been informed of her disappearance that he didn't make the trip out to Japan to join the search.

That just didn't sound like him. Had something happened to him on the dig site? Was she not the only missing person in the Leafe family? It also forced her to accept that her parent's relationship had been strained lately. Her father could have simply abandoned them..

.. but she refused to believe that was possible, whether it was denial, intuition or wishful thinking on her part. Why would this man who had doted on their family all his life, suddenly turn his back on them? Why would he have sent her this precious artifact?

Then there were all the other worlds she visited just trying to get back either to Domino or the train. What a trip it had been. All she wanted to do was sleep for about 15 days straight. Maybe her roommate thought the bunk was empty since Sylvia had thrown the covers over her head to drain out the rest of the world, but it wasn't. The sagging of the mattress from the additional weight was jarring enough but when the limbs flailed out haphazardly and accidentally struck her, Sylvia yelped and sat up swiftly. She reached for a pillow to smack the intruder with it, when her eyes focused enough on the form to prompt hesitation.

"Kyoko?!"

Kyoko is never going to admit to anyone else that she legitimately thought the bunk was empty. She knew she was tired, but it's clearly so much worse than she thought.

"Gyah!"

She's not a magical girl for nothing, at least, and she successfully gets her arms up to block the pillow before it collides with her face. Except... It never actually lands. Sylvia's caught herself just in time, and now Kyoko gets to play a different kind of defense.

"What?!" As if she's done nothing wrong in her life, ever.

[personal profile] storms_eye 2022-03-04 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
"What do you mean, what?"

Sylvia shot the other girl an incredulous look, her muscles were still tensed and the pillow was still aloft. In the next moment she expelled an exasperated huff and lowered her makeshift weapon. It was a relief that she wasn't actually under attack but she still felt bewildered from the experience.

Now that she could think, Sylvia tried another tactic.

".. I didn't know that you were the cuddly type." A little teasing seemed a fair trade for the interrupted rest. "You could have told me before and I would have tried to be understanding. I'm sure it's hard for a lot of passengers to sleep alone."

Hey.

[The Kyoko of the blue team sits down across from her counterpart, just as snack-laden as she is, and with Momo the Growlithe quickly hopping into her lap. She watches the crowd a bit before speaking up.]

So. I figure, if we're going to be staying here, we might as well learn to get along.

[That "hey" earns a wordless grunt of welcome and acknowledgment. During the pause, she assumes that this is gonna be mutual quiet snack time, which is more than fine by her, so she doesn't say anything herself.

But it looks like she read the other's intentions wrong. Kyoko slowly blinks once, twice, and then raises her eyebrows.]

I dunno what you mean. You're livin' your life, I'm livin' mine... I didn't think there was a problem. [She waggles a snack, albeit lazily and with half a grin.] Don't tell me you're wanting to get all buddy-buddy all of a sudden.

[personal profile] redmeguca 2022-03-03 10:22 am (UTC)(link)
Hah, hell no. I just figure that I should finally get the details on how your timeline is different than mine. Plus, while we're pretty good at staying in our own lane, I'd like to give Madoka some good news for once, you know?

[Kyoko's shoulders sag as she sighs. This... She doesn't wanna deal with this. She's so tired. But it's not like she'll ever be in the mood to deal with this, so she might as well do it now, while it's right in front of her. Eat what's on her plate, even if she doesn't like it.]

Yeah. Sure. We can do that. Where do we start?

I dunno what good news you're expecting, though.

I guess we start with Mitakihara? I went over to take over Mami's territory after I heard she died and found an annoying blueberry. What about you?

And I dunno, that she can meet with her friends without our awkwardness looming over the whole thing? I don't know about you, but it's starting to rub me the wrong way that I don't know about you.

[After Mami died. Kyoko doesn't reply right away, first chewing on one chip, then another.]

Well. For starters, Mami was still alive when I went back. I'd heard she had a new apprentice, so I went to check it out. Teamed up with Homura for information. But as I was scoping out the new girl [aka fighting her, mocking her, pushing her to her limits], Mami got in the middle of it to put an end to it.

Huh, do we just always end up fighting Sayaka or something? Please tell me that yours at least wasn't swinging her sword like a damn baseball bat if she was actually Mami's new apprentice.

The fox-boy she's looking for is currently holed up in a tiny cave in this freezing wasteland, gazing forlornly out at the changing sky above the creepy-looking trees. How does he leave? Is he trapped here forever? Will he ever get to see B—

Wait a minute is that Kyoko? Jiu doesn't say anything at first, but his ears have noticeably perked up as he stares off in her direction. Is it really her or is he just starting to hallucinate his roommates for some reason? Important question.
wishalone: (141 ≬ anime)

[personal profile] wishalone 2022-03-03 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Kyoko can't say she knew enough about Jiu or where he came from to have any kind of expectation -- But she still finds herself surprised by the cave anyway.

"Shit, it's cold," are the first words that come out of her mouth, and she starts to pull her coat closer around her.

Except then her eyes land on Jiu, and... She almost offers him her coat, but -- It shouldn't matter for long enough. Instead, she holds out her hand.

"I'm here to get you the hell outta here. C'mon."
foxyou: (you're not THAT bad i guess...)

[personal profile] foxyou 2022-03-08 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Kyoko's complaint about the cold is what snaps Jiu out of his momentary surprise - it's true, while his cultivation keeps him relatively insulated, Kyoko doesn't have any such ability. And when she offers him her hand, well...honestly that kinda warms him more than her coat would.

Not that he shows it. No, he just relaxes slightly, nods, and takes hold of the offered hand.

"The sooner we leave this place, the better."

Vegeta hated every part of this. The idea of having others in his head, having his thoughts and feelings, which he often kept very buried, on display. It was horrible. Two things had helped; his training he had been doing since their stop at the Void Nexus to strength his mind, and that his partner for these anchorings herself was rather reserved. It helped to have someone who wasn’t wanting to go pushing beyond their personal bubbles or be overly excited or have a dominating mind. To just understand this was work and it needed to be done.

And it was also was a chance to learn she was one of Yondu’s close people on the train.

Really Yondu, he’s going to start comparing you to Piccolo at this rate and his ability to gain children. Just in a different color scheme.

Vegeta finds her after having a break to get cleaned up during the down time, curious to see her carrying a couple of plates around, he planning to move to the side so she could get past him and to wherever she’s off to with them.

Good, there he is. Kyoko pauses purposefully to hold his attention and then jerks her head, illustrating that she means for him to follow. She spies a couple of open seats in the car up ahead, and she heads towards them, with only a brief glance over her shoulder to make sure he got the hint.

No words necessary, not right now.

They weren't needed, but this all still got a raise of Vegeta's eyebrows at her action, pausing a moment, before following after to see what this all was about. The fact it seemed it was he she had been looking for, and was waiting on him to keep pace, Vegeta can take a guess at this all. But he's still surprised by it. Having others make food on the train for all to eat wasn't unusual, but for someone to seek him out in particular to give him some was. Other than Bulma of course.
