Swirling Consequences Start
On day Seven of the Month of Quicksand as passengers are beginning their day there is an announcement over the ICP system. “Attention voidtreckers and passengers of the Voidtrecker Express. Please give your attention to the following message from the void ministry.”
A blurring of the screen and it fades into a video of an elderly woman, skin a swirl of purple and blue sat behind a dark wooden desk hands folded neatly in front of her.
I assume no one has any objections as voidtreckers have chosen to work with the Void Ministry. Please see your mission briefs. This is not a catastrophe mission."
They have a couple of hours before landing, a few hours to study their briefs and prepare for what is to come. Teams might chat, people might give out equipment gathered over the months, some of the passengers who have been on the train since the very early days of the month of Apple may have advice to give.
Either way a couple of hours later there is another announcement. “Shortly arriving at System #5739. Exiting the void in ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one...”

A blurring of the screen and it fades into a video of an elderly woman, skin a swirl of purple and blue sat behind a dark wooden desk hands folded neatly in front of her.
“Greetings crew of the Voidtrecker Express. I am commander Orlaith of the void ministry. As you will be very aware, you were recently involved in a dangerous and somewhat foolish experiment of the tethering system which we assume was initiated by your voidcraft. We received your call for emergency assistance, and were able to stabilise your craft enough to allow it to focus on ensuring crew safety. We are under the understanding that it was a crew member who used the emergency signal given by the Inspection Arm of the ministry, and that member should be commended. So too should you all, for we have reports that the crew of the Voidtrecker Express took part in a risky and difficult anchoring task to ensure the safety of all. As ever, the crew of the Voidtrecker Express exceed expectations for a crew with no formal training. The video ends.
However, in less positive news, the actions of your Voidcraft have had a ripple effect throughout the void. Worlds that are non void active have reports of seeing void activity in their skies, with residents reporting dreams and uneasy feelings. In void active worlds there are more serious incidents. We have voidcrews in thousands of systems working towards stabilising the void access points.
We understand that after such an ordeal, your crew may be exhausted however we do need your help. System #5739 is a hub world that is extremely void active. It is used to weathering void storms and the barrier between the world and the void is thin. However, it is currently experiencing an unprecedented amount of void activity and world bleeding effects. We need a team to go in and help the citizens there, clearing out any issues and helping stabilise things from within.
The people there know about the void, and are used to void travellers. However, try not to stir up any extra trouble.” The last sounds almost exhausted. Their reputation may precede them.
I assume no one has any objections as voidtreckers have chosen to work with the Void Ministry. Please see your mission briefs. This is not a catastrophe mission."

ARRIVAL
The train shakes as the view of the void leaves its windows, giving way to a cloudy and wet sky in its descent. There's a small bump, and they land on a set of tracks that lead them uphill. Grassy mounds can be spotted on either side, occupied by sheep, goats, and the occasional six legged antelope grazing. In the farther distance are secluded farm houses, or small clusters of buildings.
Things don’t seem so bad, until the clouds spark with colour that sends animals running, far skittish for anything they're used to.
The sparse hills give way to more trees as the train weaves through them, until finally comes to a stop at a small station, no more than a raised platform in the woods. With a sigh, the train doors open, and passengers can walk out into the clearing. Once everyone who wishes to leave disembarks, the train sets off once again, flying up into the air and out of sight.
"Oh good. You’re here!"
Looking over, voidtreckers will spot a young girl at the edge of the clearing.
"Ma said we should expect some void heroes any day now. She’s put some stew on."
And she’s off. For any who wish to follow her, she leads them to an inn, The Weary Wanderer written on a sign. It’s a large inn, larger than might be expected in such a remote place, and the innkeeper Albany quickly organises rooms and food for any who wish it.
“Well, there’s a whole lot more of you than there was.” She takes in the group after Maia explains that they are from the Voidtrecker Express. “Storms are getting worse, we’re getting reports of stampedes, landslides and monsters coming through the colours.” She explains. She has some maps of the area and happily allows her main common room to be turned into a planning station. She’s clearly used to void travellers.
THE WEARY WANDERER
There's enough room for the voidtreckers to squeeze into the front at once, and the tables can be joined to create a more team atmosphere.
YELLING HEIGHTS: FOREST
Location of: Dralites, young and old, their nests; monkeys, voidblobs (uncommon), fruit cups and purple stars. Displaced people.
The Yelling Height's forest reach spreads far, wrapping around the lower third of the great Ciyesia mountain and its budding fellow heights, with trees as tall as redwoods making up most of its wood. This gives plenty of space for travellers to move through, but the treetops create thick canopies that shroud the world below, the dots of penetrating light visible in contrast. Against some trees can be found what look like bushes, and there's plenty of them around, along with moss; but looking closer, these have hollow middles, made up of pin needles, twigs, feathers and all sorts. Some have been ruined, some have eggs inside.
High-pitched cries can be heard echoing, but it can be hard to tell how far, or what distance they come from - there's too many, making what should sound distressing, sound like a racket. While there's paths that can be followed, some of the wood has fallen, with ways disturbed by rubble that's tumbled all this way down from the mountain. There are signs to aid - those that haven't been knocked over - to give some sense of direction. Still this wood is hard to navigate, and Voidtreckers will want to be careful about rushing in without a plan. Trouble lurks in all manners...
YELLING HEIGHTS: SCRUBLANDS
Location Of: Farm animals, some voidblobs, great chinchillas, farmers in need; ruined paths, craggle leaf. Some dralites, mostly adult. Displaced people.
The trees eventually give way to a mix of rock and dirt, stone jagging up from the ground underfoot that travellers will need to watch out for. Vegetation is littered around, patches of shrubs as often easy to catch the eye as grazed grass poking out around mossy-coated stone. There are paths, or were, but only the remains of them can be found, the area reshaped by landslides.
Animals can be found isolated or in some groups, spooked by any newcomers around, and the odd shepherd trying their best to get their herds under control. But there's further trouble than blocked paths to deal with - because these jobs can never be simple.
LOWER LANDS: FARMLANDS
Location of: Voidblobs (common), great chinchillas, a few horned goats; ruined pathways, farms in need; people to craft balms and potions, access to tools.
While not as high as the Ciyesia mountain, nor as shrouding as the blanketing forest, the rolling countryside shows its sloping and uneven distance, varying fields split by tones and sandy paths - or what should be sandy paths. But the damage to the earth is noticeable, chunks of the various mounds ruined, broken at parts. You can see trouble, ensuing or approaching, just by looking around long enough.
And the biggest trouble will be reaching it.
Buildings squeeze against fields and fencing, separated far from anyone that could be called a neighbour. But there's a few of what can be called villages, where trades are conducted and visitors are sure to stop. There's usually a singular inn, but people looking to call on the help of a void traveller to help with this mess. They can promise hot meals and some goods in exchange, but first needs to come the help.
Extra people to set up perimeters are very welcome, as are those who can drive the creatures back into the forests. It’s not just the homes themselves that need protecting but also the paths between them, so voidtreckers and others can deliver supplies to the further afield communities.
FROM THE VOID...
For now they need found, gathered in once place and care given to them.
They are rampaging, strong in their urge to destroy. Fighting them is difficult as nothing seems to slow them down until they die, it’s hard to know how hurt they are and injury doesn’t seem to stop their brute strength or will to kill. They rarely will stop and fight either, requiring a team just to keep up with them as they will lash out and fight but keep rampaging on, drawn towards groups of people or creatures. They can be found anywhere.
OOC NOTES
This log lasts for 7-10 Quicksand, with the next log going up on the 21st March (11 Quicksand). farmlands: horned goats
Does Tidus know much about herding or rearing? Absolutely not. But he usually knows a few things about making wildlife scarper and run off without doing too much to the animal in question.
Not with these guys. Cipher manages to dodge a bolting goat with its head meant to catch the guy in its protruding crown, eventually slowly, swinging its head when it notices it hasn't gotten a prize. It starts turning back in their direction, Tidus having heard the commotion, and he swings up a hand-
"Zip and zap already-!"
And throws it out in the goat's direction, a weak but quick bolt of lightning hitting the ground in front of it, startling it with an angry cry.
An important key word there: Angry. For no weak light show's going to make this fellow leave them, and instead gets Tidus a new target on him as it starts running for him, Tidus cursing under his breath. Another quick bolt misses from his panic, and then he has to be the one to dodge and roll, the side of the foot just clipping against the side of those fancy antler-horn-things.
This is going perfect.

The distraction was certainly appreciated though, so that he could get back onto his feet and while the goat charged at his unfortunate rescuer, Aden moved swiftly in- taking a leap at the animal's back. Twig that he was his weight wasn't exactly sufficient to take the creature down to the ground, but that wasn't what he'd been aiming for.
One hand managed to catch onto a horn, and as he tried straightening himself out the other arm tried to move to wrap around the creature's neck. Aden had taken down bigger creatures before, and he'd never met any organic lifeform that was choke-proof.
The goat had other ideas though.
With the added weight on its back it bucked and panicked- though it sounded more like it was furious, really. While Aden managed to hang on for a moment- hopefully long enough for Tidus to have gotten back on his feet- he found himself being tossed sideways along with a whole lot of falling goat that definitely weighed more than Aden himself did. Though Aden's reaction time was good enough to roll out of the way, those horns were sharp and as he rolled and tossed himself back onto his feet as well as he could, he looked significantly more scuffed.
And twice as angry.
"You good to zap this son of a Hutt again!?" He called to his fellow goat-wrangler. Even if it was unsuccessful, Aden could at least attempt to bring it down again. Or hopefully another shock would be enough to send it off toward the forest. Either or.
no subject
Not a state of being that keeps, but that gives Tidus more room even before his blue company calls over.
"I got better!" Tidus is already pulling back a foot, a swirling mass of blue beginning to form in the place it was in. Rapidly building, taking just a few seconds to become a good enough size, density, for the kick that comes to send it flying straight for the crown-horned goat's disagreeable face.
There's enough strength in there to knock the creature with a stumble, to stun it far better than the lightning - but would a punch to the face make the goat reconsider its life choices today? On top of getting jumped?
no subject
As soon as it regained its footing, it was back to stamping its hooves, apparently trying to decide which target would be the easiest. It seemed a little shaky- that hit to the face had apparently done some damage at least- but Aden was hyperaware of any movement anyway, standing in a stance that would allow him to quickly launch himself sideways should the animal decide to charge at him.
"Just checking friend, but- you good if I just ice this son of a Hutt?"
An indication toward the knife he was so kindly allowed to borrow, to indicate what he means by that exactly. Aden wouldn't mind giving it a few more tries to wear the animal out and toss it back into the forest, but he was pretty sure that getting really got with those horns would be bad news for the both of them.
no subject
There's being stubborn, and then there's being a danger to everyone. Which is what gets Tidus to see what Aden pulls out, his mouth grim, but-
"Yeah. You want me coming in and grabbing it?"
Tidus knows they might have to be quick about this decision, and if Aden assents, he'll be sure to play his part; be quick to move, to circle around the creature and make it more difficult for the thing to know who to go for initially. Hopefully the knock to the head will cause some trouble for the goat's reflexes - and Tidus is keeping as far from its hind legs as possible.
no subject
And while he would have settled it without any murder, that didn't seem like it'd be an option.
"Distract it," He called to his partner now in bumping this particular goat off the census, "Keep its attention on you, and I'll do what I have to do."
Preferably cleanly and without any needless suffering. And it would be nice if the goat could be traded for something good too if it needed to die in the first place.
no subject
Grab them. The goat cries with the sudden fight for control being had, one that Tidus knows he has to be careful with. But he shouts, "Go for it!" as the creature pulls back, a tug of war ensuing. Tidus digs in his heels as he can, and it's a thrust towards him that he needs to be careful about, with the spikes of the horns as unattractive as ever.
Especially to be too close to. But he'll give a kick to the goat's front if he has to, a war of strength not fully on his side. The dizzy, unstable state of the animal is giving him some aid, however.
Hopefully, Aden's got even better aid to provide.
no subject
Aden was quick to move in, of course, not about to waste the chance he'd been given. In a battle of strength between a person and a wild beast, the beast had a tendency to win when it dragged out too long.
While the goat struggled for control even in its shaky state, Aden was quick to slip close, knife in hand- jabbed up into the goat's neck, apparently finding its mark judging by how quickly the animal went down as a result.
It wasn't pleasant work. But at least it was fast, and without much suffering.
And hopefully it should be worth something too. Surely there'd be someone who could make use of it for meat or fur or even those horns, Aden figured. First thing's first though, as he pulled the knife out so he could wipe it off, gaze turning to Tidus, giving him a quick glance over to see if he could spot any obvious injuries.
"You okay, kid?"
no subject
But it does manage in that brief struggle to scrape a jagged thorn for a thorn into Tidus's upper arm, a cut off curse let out when the pain hits Tidus. It's not a graze, but not too deep, and Tidus isn't turned in a way to make the stab wound obvious to Aden before the question. He's shuffling on his feet, the pain starting to pulse, and he hovers a hand over the wound, then starts to move away from the animal to give himself distance.
"Yeah-" Ugh, "--yeah, it just got me. I'll clean up."
As soon as he can kneel, sit on the ground and take off his hoodie. The tear bloody where it is, and his skin more so once revealed. He's not entirely alright, he knows, isn't trying to hide it; his answer is more aggravated than anything, annoyed.
Again: Ugh. If only he could hold still an animal like it was nothing.
no subject
The goat could wait. Aden moved around the animal, heading over to Tidus. He was careful to not immediately get right up into his personal space- only close enough to look, not to immediately reach. It was what he would have preferred for himself, after all, and had it been him who'd gotten injured only to instantly have a concerned bystander or teammate right up in his face, he would punched first and asked questions never.
Not everyone reacted like that and the kid seemed less inclined to bouts of random violence than he did, but still. Crowding an injured person was never a good idea anyway.
"Mm, our stubborn friend got you good, didn't it."
Mild concern, though it was hard to properly see, given his emotions running more subtle than a human's. Still, it was there in his tone at least.
"I guess the predators will eat well while we get you back to civilization to get you patched up properly."
He had most certainly not brought any first aid kit with him, unfortunately, nor did it seem like the kid had, so best to go back to get the injury treated a bit better than they could do in the field.
no subject
"Sure you don't want it? Or- see if the farmers want anything from it?" He gives the smallest wave with the hand of his less compromised arm, then holds his other over his lap. "I've got bandages, magic - I'm fine."
At least, it's not as worrisome as needing to take him anywhere. From where he's positioned his hand carefully, there comes a golden light, like threads - and they come together, making appear a white bag, chunky with whatever contents are inside.
no subject
Magic indeed. The powers he'd already shown off were somewhat unfamiliar and here the kid was showing off another talent. It was once again hammering home how idiotic it was of the train to grab ordinary men like himself. Even if Aden was critical to how many relatively young people had been flung into all of this.
"Need some help bandaging yourself up, at least?"
The situation right now was calm enough. Aden wasn't one for pushing on when injured unless the situation absolutely called for it. And since their stubborn friend was already dead, and the kid was wiser than Aden in bringing medical supplies, the least he could do was offer assistance in helping getting him patched up.
"And since you helped, I figure we should both bring the goat back and see if we can't get something from it. I think the one who actually bled for it has more of a claim to getting something for it than the one who didn't, in fact."
no subject
It's either that or rolling out an actual bandage around his arm, and he might as well go for a patch that's likely to be less awkward (and should be just as effective, in his experience). He's got some cloth to press down on the area, just for the blood that is coming through. In the meanwhile, he makes a small sound at Aden's offer, or preference.
"If we get a meal out of it, that's enough by me," he remarks, indifferent otherwise. But he admits, awkwardly, "I've...never tried to get anything out of giving anyone an animal. I know someone who'll probably cut it up and skin it for parts on the train though. I mean, if no one else we find gives anything good - whatever you think's good."
Is he leaving that up to Aden? Yes, entirely.
no subject
More with kolto patches, really, but the two were pretty similar it seemed. Certainly similar enough that he could help get it on correctly.
There was a bit of an eyebrow raise, at Tidus apparently leaving the fate of the goat and what they could get out of it entirely up to him. It was a sort of trusting nature that Aden himself certainly would never entertain having, since he assumed that most people would only look out for themselves when there was something to possibly gain.
"I wouldn't mind taking it back to the train, honestly. Pretty sure I could make a knife or two out of those horns or some bones."
Hardly ideal weaponry, but then, it'd be a while he thought until he could get his knives from home. He did also enjoy collecting knives as much as he enjoyed putting them to good use.
"And if you want a meal out of it, I'm sure I could arrange something. If there's any use for the rest of it, well. I'll leave that for you or anyone else who might want it. If that seems fair."
There was a slightly pointed look he gave. Don't trust strange blue men to be fair, perhaps. Maybe that was just the cynic in him.
