Jema'grethy: Memory Cave

Passengers see a vision, an instance of someone's life, before just as suddenly - they find themselves inside a cave. It is light, a strange moss glowing on the walls and ceiling illuminates the cave nicely, and it is large enough for them to pace around in without trouble.

They're not alone. In the cave with them is another voidtrecker; maybe someone they know well, or maybe someone they've only seen in the aisles of the train. But they are together in this cave, and they will come to find out that it was one of their memories that the other witnessed. And them, one of yours.

The cave has no exit, at least not yet. They know that it will, eventually. When the time is right.

But for that time to come, they first must talk...

"He's still a Somebody." No making up random exceptions, Xion! "So there's one Somebody that you can talk with just fine."

"This cave thing trapped us together in here. And besides, he has someone who tells him what to do and gives him missions too. And there are all sorts of things he can't do... like eat ice cream..."

Roxas scratches at the side of his head. "I don't think missions and having someone tell you what to do are what decides whether someone is a Somebody... Whether they can eat ice cream either." He does try to keep that assuring smile though. "But it's nice to know that he's that much like us in those ways."

"I..." That wasn't what she had meant to say. Is that what she had said? She was so confused. But at least this meant Roxas wasn't going to be angry about Taiki being with them, right?

"What's wrong? Did you mean something else?"

She nodded, but was unsure how to explain. She looked at her gloves, trying to figure it out. Finally she asked a question, rather than trying to rephrase her point. "Do... most Somebodies also get missions...?"

"Well, I don't know that much more about them than you. But I think it depends on what they do. Like sometimes jobs can involve missions." Did what Riku and Ventus' group do count as missions? He's never asked.

"Then... why did you think what I said meant Somebodies get missions...?"

"I didn't, I... What I meant is just because Taiki is kind of like us, doesn't make your ability to make friends with him any different than befriending another Somebody. You were able to do that. So I think you can make more friends if you want to."

"But... he's Taiki..." she said, a bit dumbfounded. They weren't friends because of anything Xion was good at, but because Taiki was good at being friends. Right?

Roxas runs a hand through his hair, in a way that probably mimics Axel. "I met Taiki. And he's pretty cool. But we didn't become friends immediately. Friendship is something you have to work at, I think. That's why you and him are friends. Not because he's Taiki."

"But... I didn't work.... Not to be his friend or... yours and Axel's...."

Roxas laughs lightly. "Yes, you did. You learned my name. And you learned to trust us. You didn't have to do any of those things. That's work. And keeping in touch with him, that's work too."

"But... no one told me to..." So it wasn't missions, so it wasn't work, right? Her head tilted curiously.

"Work isn't just about what people tell you to do. It just means it takes time. Like when you're learning something new."

"But... I thought work... was what you don't want to do but have to or you'll be destroyed..."

"That's just the Organization's definition. But I've done work in other places." Technically, that was a datascape but let's not quibble. "It's definitely not just about not being destroyed. It's more about... keeping busy. And gaining something. In some cases, that something is friendship."

"What... did we gain doing missions...?"

"Experience, mostly. It helped us get stronger and smarter about fighting."

A small ghost of a smile. "Did we...?"

"Of course we did. We can't all start out amazing like Axel."

She giggled into her hands. "Think we'll ever be as good as him?"

"I don't know about you. But I'm planning on being better!"

"Better than Axel?" she asked, eyes wide, a laugh still in her voice as she shook her head. "We'll never be that good, Roxas!" she laughed again.

"I've got time. I just need to pick up a few more tricks of my own."
