A City Falls: Start

Preparation

Just after light on the seventh day of the month of Bassoon everyone’s SCA glows with the colour of the void before showing a message. A briefing for the mission to come.

Anyone who goes to investigate the dressing carriage will find all the cupboards and drawers open. They may need to battle through spider webs but soon will find an array of clothes. Trousers, skirts, dresses, shirts, robes, cloaks. Everything they will need and plenty of choice. All the clothes have accents of team colours in more muted hues than the normal bold hoodies they wear.

A few hours later there is an announcement over the speakers. "Arrival to Planet #25768 imminent. Prepare for exit from Void. Drop order: Purple, Orange, Red, Blue. All passengers are to wear their Safety Control Apparatus and are reminded that emergency evacuation protocol is three short taps."

The train shudders and jerks. It is time.

Purple

"Purple Team to doors. Drop in two minutes. Purple team to doors."

The train flies down through the air before coming to a stop between two rocky outcrops. The doors hiss open, it’s a bit of a jump down to the ground and anyone who looks back will find the train hard to see. Not invisible but definitely cloaked, shifting to blend in with the rock.

They can hear the sound of many footsteps and the high sound of young voices. It is easy to hear where they need to be.

As they move down the rocky slope they will see the main pass. A large group of children are walking. Spirits are high even if it is clear they are on their guard. Older teens are wearing weapons, swords, the odd axe, a few daggers. Nothing expertly crafted but they all wear them with ease. Slightly younger children carry the very young, toddlers and those too young to walk and keep pace.

There’s a sound from in front of the group. From around the corner a girl, about thirteen years old, runs towards them. Her braids bounce against her shoulders, her eyes are wide with fear and she waves her hands at the others. “Run! Run!”

A shadow looms behind her, a winged wolf, gaining speed towards her. Sat on the wolf is a spear wielding goblin.

From all around them a growling of many more wolves, in the hills, close and ready to pounce.

Orange

Once Purple Team are gone the train flies again. "Orange Team to doors. Drop in two minutes. Orange Team to doors."

The train seems to be still concealed as it hovers at the city walls. There’s a bit of a jump onto the walls but at least they are near one of the staircases down into the city.

Also luckily no one seems to have seen them appearing out of no where though that has more to do with the general chaos rather than anything else!

There is a lot of chaos! People evacuating, animals everywhere, people looking lost and bewildered. Get herding or helping and encourage people up that cliff path!

Red

The train flies onward. "Red team to doors. Drop in two minutes. Red team to doors."

The train makes a slightly bumpy landing on a rocky slope. Scrambling up the slope red team will see a group of fighters, perhaps eighty in total. There are some supplies to the side, not yet allotted. Some horses and weapons. All the fighters are currently focused on a tall woman who is on horseback, facing them from the front.

“… Say those that stand here, as few as we may be were the ones who end the goblin menace on our lands for good. For our children and our families. We fight!”

The end of what was clearly a rousing speech, the fighters cheer. They begin to move over the slope, towards the goblin camp below. If you are joining this battle the time is now!

Blue

The train flies low, skimming over the lake. "Blue Team to doors. Drop in one minute. Blue Team to doors."

Jumping down off the train they will land in the shallows of the lake. It’s not deep enough to go over their boots and now too far to wade to shore. The shore is rocky, loose rocks and pools of water to avoid. The tower stands before them. Three goblins, riding wolves perch on the walls high above them. The sky above crackles with lightning that is not at all natural.

The doorway to the tower is open, there are a lot of stairs to get up. The howls of the wolves fill the air as the wizards fight them off above. Time to climb!

Gwen has one single webshooter on her. Just one. The other one was loaned to Miles and Gwen was making due. There was enough humidity in the air that her webs were strong and so very versatile and currently, she was sitting up in a tree, crouched on a tree branch and waiting.

Timing was everything with what she was about to do, and it had everything to do with one of the flying wolves and their riders. There was one buzzing around up high, trying to stay out of reach and Gwen was purposefully antagonizing it. Flinging globs of webbing at it to irritate it just enough to come down and chase Gwen.

As she swings from tree branch to tree branch, she swoops down by Edge and waves.

"Hey! Wolf on your left!"

And Gwen has let enough webbing behind herself where her own wolf is starting to tangle itself up. As was her plan.

Edge liked the look! But being not the sort to jump on a taken girl behind low-key flirtations, settled for a thumbs-up that became a brutal strike with his open palm as the wolf drew forward to snap at him. Not expecting this, the wolf bowled over backwards, quite regretting its life choices.

"If we can lock some down, I can switch to melee!"

Lock some down. Cool. That's something she can do.

"On it!" Gwen shouts as she swings by again, landing on a tree branch in a crouch. "Lock some down, lock some down. Okay. I think maybe if I..."

And with her one webshooter, she fires off a few massive webs, trapping several goblins and a couple wolves in place. There's roaring, shouting and shrieking and she's pretty sure she's being cussed out and called all manner of things, so, with an eyeroll and a wave of 'whatever' from the sixteen year old Spider-Woman;

"Yeah, yeah. I've heard it all before. Probably." Turning to look at Edge, she lets herself slip to the underside of the branch, feet planted and sticking and just managing to dodge a spear that her spider-senses warned her about.

Firing off a line of webbing, she snags the errant spear out of the air and yanks it over to herself. Now she's armed.

"How's that? That locked down enough for you?"

"That'll do!"

Edge yanked his fuuma shuriken out of his belt, but rather than unfolding it into its four-pronged throwing shape he simply grabbed it by the center ring to wield it more like a sword. Without hesitation, he charged into the fray, slashing left and right to cut down the goblins and wolves without hesitation or remorse. "Nice work!"

"Thanks!"

Gwen's glad he approves, glad she has someone helping her fight these monsters and their rides. Going after children was inexcusable and wrong and Gwen was throwing her everything into this fight, even if it was the absolute pits.

Bouncing from one tree branch to another, she fires off a line of webbing to a tree across the way. Watching an oncoming group of flying wolves and their riders, she waits for a moment, holding her end of the web line loose until just the right moment. Then it's pulled tight, catching goblins by the neck, dropping them to the ground below, flying wolves flying up and off and away in what was probably the only good life choice they've ever made.

If Edge had one complaint, it was that her techniques tended towards the nonlethal. Ensnaring these monsters was well and good, but he'd rather something swift and direct to make sure they didn't have to deal with the problem second time.

But that was okay. Her techniques were very effective, and he'd much rather have effectiveness than lethality. Besides, he could handle that!

With three swift motions of his fingers and then a throwing gesture, Edge unleashed another ninjutsu. The earth around a number of goblins both dropped and pinned rose up, then crashed down on them in a wave, burying them beneath it.

Gwen is happy being the one to contain and confine. She can let others do all the murdering. She's only been a Big Damn Hero for a handful of years, and is already being charged with a murder she didn't even commit back home. She likes being non-lethal.

But, since this is kids in danger, Gwen won't fault anyone else for killing goblins. Don't worry. She'll get to a point where she can actually kill one of these creatures.

For now, she's happy doing her own thing. Netting goblins, leaving them easy targets for the others.

Like she's doing now. There are a couple goblins that she's giving a significant amount of hell to, wrapping them in a cocoon of webbing from her webshooters, kicking the goblin ball towards a tree where it sticks and the goblins continue their tirade against Gwen, probably her mother, and everything she loves and holds dear.

Whatever. She doesn't care at all.

Edge had a different perspective, growing up as literal monsters grew in number and ultimately caused a massive amount of suffering. These goblins won't have the same chance.

"I still can't believe we haven't been given proper weapons," he grumbled out loud in the middle of cutting a few more down. "This battle would be trivial if I had my swords and shuriken with me! How'd you get access to that --" Not knowing how to describe it, he motioned with a hand like he was shooting web.
