The Endless River

On the morning of day twenty one of the month of Kazoo there is a message on the ICP screens around the train. Their SCA's will light up the colour of the Void and show the following information.

World #398050 is a void nexus known locally as Tshering. As a void nexus this world has strong links with the void and the connection through worlds. World #398050 is home to the Endless River. Legends speak of this river being powerful enough to send thoughts from one heart to another across any distance. All that is needed is for you to know who it is you wish to reach.

On-board

The dressing carriage is open, filled with clothing best suited to a pleasant spring day. Light, airy and in a rainbow of joyful colours and florals. One closet is entirely filled with wide-brimmed hats bedecked with ribbons, feathers and ornaments. A stack of picnic baskets and containers filled with an alarming variety of passenger-suitable foodstuffs and flasked drinks sits in one corner, next to rolls of thick, weatherproof blankets in the four team colours.

The large box marked Do Not Use Yet, filled with small, empty jute bags, is hopefully still sat in the Luggage carriage, ready for passengers to grab handfuls of its contents as directed by the announcement.

Upon landing (after an appropriate countdown), the train remains on the surface, its carriages partially curved to form a gathering site for the day. Welcome to Tshering, the eighth void nexus!

A Day for Picnics

Tshering, system #398050, is a strange place, only habitable by grace of the passengers' SCAs. The sky is shot through with colours, a cascade of sunsets, and through it, the void shimmering through it in seams like a child's painting of the milky way. Still, there's a beauty to the chaotic mash of colours that soaks through its landscape, and in the shelter of the forests of towering funghi that dot its surface, the Void can go unseen by its visitors.

The temperature seems mild, suitable for the provided clothing, and if there are weather patterns around the world they've taken the day off. The funghi are sturdy enough that what air flow there is doesn't disturb their stalks, and carved grooves and holds in some of the larger examples indicate that climbing them to sit atop their glowing crowns is eminently possible, and, in fact, encouraged.

the Endless River

The Endless River is a font of pure chaos, flowing from a multitude of small rivulets across the area to a central reservoir, from which it pours directly upwards, away from Tshering's surface and out of sight, beyond the world's atmosphere.

Anything bagged and placed within the Endless River will also flow upwards and soon be out of sight, passing, presumably, into the Void. Scattered across the surface of Tshering are small, glittering pebbles, as described in the announcement.

The stones are pleasantly cool to the touch, and all passengers need to do is feel. Messages can be in any form that the Voidtreckers wish. Perhaps words, perhaps feelings, perhaps an image from their mind into the stone. Perhaps a mixture. Once they begin their message the stone will glow slightly and continue to glow as they secure it in the bag and cast it into the river. They will feel, almost instinctively, that they need to focus as they do so, thinking of the person they wish to reach all the while.

There are plenty of bags and many more stones; passengers will not be limited in their sendings.

"That's a fucking shame," Devero says, eyebrows arching. "They control alcohol and tobacco like that too?"
bakegarasu: (uh oh)

"Of course they don't. Slaps on the wrist if you're underage or selling to them, but a lot of people smoke indoors and most offices have after-hours drinking parties. And the yakuza smoke and drink all the time, obviously." He thinks back to some of his scars... eh.

"Didn't see much weed. Saw a lot of harder shit... sometimes we moved drugs. Other times we moved... other stuff." Which he'd never been all that comfortable to begin with, but he'd long learned to keep his damn mouth shut.
subcircuits: (run that by me again)

Devero squints at him, baffled. "Wait-- let me get this straight," he says. "Alcohol and tobacco are legal but they arbitrarily restrict access to this?" He waves his blunt around. "That's... completely bonkers!

"Harder drugs I can understand," he continues. "But what makes herb any different than the other two?"
bakegarasu: (driven by hate)

[personal profile] bakegarasu 2021-04-16 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah. And I don't know? It's been like... forty years since they came down hard on it? We've run it... it's more popular nowadays than it has been in a while. We've also run meth, psychedelic mushrooms, cocaine, and stuff like that."

He frowns. "... Should stop talking like I'm still part of it. But yeah, alcohol's a big thing, smoking's still big. Everything else is illegal as hell."
subcircuits: (i mean if you say so)

Yeah, it wasn't fair to expect Otoha to know that, was it? Still, Devero shakes his head and mutters, "Your Before-society was absolute bullshit, mate, I'm sorry. There's nothing wrong with this that isn't as bad or worse with booze and cigarettes."

He considers the joint in his hand and gestures with it again, this time in Otoha's direction. "--You ever tried herb? You want to now?"
bakegarasu: (who's that rapping at my chamber door?)

[personal profile] bakegarasu 2021-04-17 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, I know. Not like anyone in the yakuza pays real close attention to the law unless it's to avoid it." In fairness, there are a lot of stupid laws.

He looks down at the joint and nods. "Once or twice... might be nice to try it somewhere I can totally relax, though." He takes it and inhales deeply, holding it and then letting out the smoke. "... Few times I tried it I was relatively safe... but still had a reputation to hold up and... you know. Emotions were still an issue."

"You couldn't ever really let your guard down with them, could you?" Stoned he may be, but Devero's eyes are shrewd as he assesses Otoha. He leans back on one arm. His voice is almost gentle as he says, "'S just you and me here. Go ahead and let it go, mate. Emotions and all."
bakegarasu: (determination of the strong)

[personal profile] bakegarasu 2021-04-20 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
"No. Never. Shit, it took several people dragging me out of my shell on the train before I felt like I could relax a little. Still can't, not completely." When you live in a situation where you know full well someone with the same job as you can come rocketing in to kill everyone in your bar, relaxation isn't something that comes easily.

He faintly knows how this goes, so he takes the joint and inhales deeply, holding his breath for a bit before he lets it go. "... Emotions are hard. Anger or smug amusement were the only two I could show to most people." He looks at Devero and then back up at the sky.

"Was a pretty stoic guy. Even around... Reiji." It's getting a little easier to say his name without his brain completely stopping. "In the... what, month and a half I've been here? I've talked more than I have in the past... two, three years?"

"Because we care about you here," Devero says gently. "We want to hear what you have to say. You're more to us than just a weapon." He hopes Otoha has started to understand that, but he also suspects it's something that he'll need to keep hearing.
bakegarasu: (those cold blue eyes)

[personal profile] bakegarasu 2021-04-26 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
"... You do, despite all odds." He takes another deep puff, letting out a small smoke cloud. "Gotten... a little better at accepting that. Still don't really feel it, though. Even on missions, I'm... just there to kill things..."

He blinks heavily and leans against Devero a little bit. He hasn't smoked in a long while. "... Emotions are hard. And kind of... don't know. Not 'scary', but..." Unnerving? Maybe?
subcircuits: (frustrated)

[personal profile] subcircuits 2021-05-03 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Devero's a little surprised when Otoha leans into him, palpable as a stiffening that passes again almost immediately. He then leans right back, reciprocating pressure with pressure.

"Are you?" he asks. "'Cause I thought I was here just to-- hit things--" He is not a fan of killing. "--an' it turns out I was wrong. So maybe you are too. Maybe that's why you're here."

He reaches out, asking for the joint back so he can hit it again himself. "Hard," he finishes for the other man. "Real fuckin' hard. You got that right."
bakegarasu: (uh oh)

[personal profile] bakegarasu 2021-05-03 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
"... I don't know." Shit, he's been hiding it well during their conversation, but he can feel the weed tugging at the seams of his control. "Already fucked up a relationship today. Should just... go back to being a killing machine..."

He doesn't want to, though. He's so tired of all of this... but it feels like he has to run backwards again.
subcircuits: (fuck around and find out)

[personal profile] subcircuits 2021-05-08 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
"Says who?" Devero asks him simply. "An' who says you can't try and fix whatever it is you fucked up?"
bakegarasu: (heroes rise again)

[personal profile] bakegarasu 2021-05-08 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
He blinks in surprise - is it starting to hit already? He can't even tell at this point. "... I... hurt someone close to me. Don't want to do that again. ... I'm.... might be better, though. If no one gets close enough for me to get hurt. Reiji did, and he... well."

It's his fault. It's all his fault for trying to be happy, even a little.
