The Endless River

On the morning of day twenty one of the month of Kazoo there is a message on the ICP screens around the train. Their SCA's will light up the colour of the Void and show the following information.

World #398050 is a void nexus known locally as Tshering. As a void nexus this world has strong links with the void and the connection through worlds. World #398050 is home to the Endless River. Legends speak of this river being powerful enough to send thoughts from one heart to another across any distance. All that is needed is for you to know who it is you wish to reach.

On-board

The dressing carriage is open, filled with clothing best suited to a pleasant spring day. Light, airy and in a rainbow of joyful colours and florals. One closet is entirely filled with wide-brimmed hats bedecked with ribbons, feathers and ornaments. A stack of picnic baskets and containers filled with an alarming variety of passenger-suitable foodstuffs and flasked drinks sits in one corner, next to rolls of thick, weatherproof blankets in the four team colours.

The large box marked Do Not Use Yet, filled with small, empty jute bags, is hopefully still sat in the Luggage carriage, ready for passengers to grab handfuls of its contents as directed by the announcement.

Upon landing (after an appropriate countdown), the train remains on the surface, its carriages partially curved to form a gathering site for the day. Welcome to Tshering, the eighth void nexus!

A Day for Picnics

Tshering, system #398050, is a strange place, only habitable by grace of the passengers' SCAs. The sky is shot through with colours, a cascade of sunsets, and through it, the void shimmering through it in seams like a child's painting of the milky way. Still, there's a beauty to the chaotic mash of colours that soaks through its landscape, and in the shelter of the forests of towering funghi that dot its surface, the Void can go unseen by its visitors.

The temperature seems mild, suitable for the provided clothing, and if there are weather patterns around the world they've taken the day off. The funghi are sturdy enough that what air flow there is doesn't disturb their stalks, and carved grooves and holds in some of the larger examples indicate that climbing them to sit atop their glowing crowns is eminently possible, and, in fact, encouraged.

the Endless River

The Endless River is a font of pure chaos, flowing from a multitude of small rivulets across the area to a central reservoir, from which it pours directly upwards, away from Tshering's surface and out of sight, beyond the world's atmosphere.

Anything bagged and placed within the Endless River will also flow upwards and soon be out of sight, passing, presumably, into the Void. Scattered across the surface of Tshering are small, glittering pebbles, as described in the announcement.

The stones are pleasantly cool to the touch, and all passengers need to do is feel. Messages can be in any form that the Voidtreckers wish. Perhaps words, perhaps feelings, perhaps an image from their mind into the stone. Perhaps a mixture. Once they begin their message the stone will glow slightly and continue to glow as they secure it in the bag and cast it into the river. They will feel, almost instinctively, that they need to focus as they do so, thinking of the person they wish to reach all the while.

There are plenty of bags and many more stones; passengers will not be limited in their sendings.

Works!

She knew, inwardly, that he'd been right. She had difficulty understanding why his transporting her from the battle against her will was so upsetting. She wasn't a controlled droid anymore, and his actions were logical under the circumstances.

Why, then, did she immediately feel like turning away when he approached?

"Oh," she responded, voice carefully neutral. "What do you wish to speak about?"

"Because I want to apologize again, and also share something about me that might give you new context. I'm also hoping to learn more about you too, while we talk." He was carefully neutral himself, ready in case she said she didn't want to talk. Trunks was usually a pretty respectful person unless given a reason not to be.

She was quiet for a long moment, crossing her arms, a curiously defensive gesture for someone like her.

"Go ahead, then."

Trunks was quiet for a bit too, trying to think of where and how to start. "When I'm in Super Saiyan, my emotions are a bit more heightened--I can be more reckless, as the form is driven by anger and rage." Possibly an odd place to start, but he hoped it would be enough. "I'm sure you noticed I paused a bit, seemed to be wrestling with myself. I was, because I was in Super Saiyan."

If she hadn't noticed before, he'd just told her so...

"My world has been under siege by homicidal psychopathic androids since I was about 6 months old. They've taken almost everything from me, including near-killing me. And I'm 'lucky'--because I can at least amuse them and stand up to them. No one else can--and my whole world has suffered." It might seem like a weird segue, but he was hoping she'd connect the dots.

[personal profile] marvelous_murderbot 2021-04-17 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
"And you think I am like them?" she replied, simply.

They were the only dots she had to connect, after all.

"In this, Super Saiyan, as you put it, at least."

[personal profile] light_of_willpower 2021-04-17 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
"I know you're not like them, logically. But finding out you were an android, essentially, while I was in a heightened state, meant my bias was harder to fight against." Trunks sighed, reaching up and running a hand through his bangs.

"I'm suspicious of all androids. It's not rational, and I know it's far from logical. But considering how my life has been, it's there. So...I'm sorry. I do try to have my more rational mind make the decisions and judge accordingly. It's hard sometimes, especially in super-saiyan."
marvelous_murderbot: (displeased)

[personal profile] marvelous_murderbot 2021-04-17 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
She was quiet for a very long moment, weighing all of that.

"I can...accept that apology. But you must understand - we do not have androids like that in my universe. Robotic life of all forms are...drudge laborers, weapons of war. Very seldom do we have autonomy of our own. I am...fortunate, to be free. And it took my erstwhile master's untimely and sudden death to achieve it."
light_of_willpower: (long-hair concerned)

[personal profile] light_of_willpower 2021-04-17 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Now it was Trunks' turn to be quiet. Thinking about that, and if she didn't object, he's going to sit. Not close--enough for distance, but to talk comfortably. "I'm not sure which world has it worse, for its androids." He finally settled on. "My world doesn't really have advanced robotics that have sentience except for the androids. Which probably sounds barbaric and monstrous. I'm sorry."

[personal profile] marvelous_murderbot 2021-04-17 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Perhaps," she said, settling in herself, "it's better that way. Rather that quadrillions of droids, in servitude."

She was quiet a moment after that.

"I...can also admit that once, I may have been more like them. For most of my existence, I was programmed as an assassin and bodyguard. I had no choice in it - I never even had the capacity to question it, not until I emancipated myself."
light_of_willpower: (long-hair confused)

[personal profile] light_of_willpower 2021-04-17 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
"That's why you're not like them." Trunks said after a moment of contemplation. "You choose to be different. From all I've seen, you haven't decided to murder anyone just because it amused you, or toyed with anyone else sadistically." Trunks raked his hand through his bangs again. "17 and 18...they had a choice, in some ways. While they were created, they didn't have to follow through on what their creator wanted of them."

[personal profile] marvelous_murderbot 2021-04-18 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
"Once that was my purpose, at the will of an organic master. I would not choose to do it, if I could avoid it."

He nodded.

"It must have been terrible."
light_of_willpower: (long-hair confused)

[personal profile] light_of_willpower 2021-04-18 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"It probably isn't very good of me, but I can't really find it in my heart to pity them." Trunks said, managing to keep the bitterness out of his voice.
marvelous_murderbot: (curious)

[personal profile] marvelous_murderbot 2021-04-18 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
She gave him a look, frowning.

"I meant for you. For the other people."
light_of_willpower: (long-hair grimace)

[personal profile] light_of_willpower 2021-04-20 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Reaching up, Trunks slapped his hand to his forehead. "Right. Sorry. You're..." A sigh, and he brought his knees up to wrap his arm around them. "You're not wrong. It's been awful. Especially since sometimes there aren't even any bodies left. They've been vaporized, thanks to whatever the androids have that's similar to a ki blast."

[personal profile] marvelous_murderbot 2021-04-20 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
"They seem similar in some ways to war robots in my universe. Though there, at least, they are simple, programmed things - that would not recognize what they were doing as either right or wrong. They do not suffer from ideologies."
light_of_willpower: (long-hair looking down hopeful)

[personal profile] light_of_willpower 2021-04-20 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
"Simple, programmed things. Sometimes with complex programming, but still programmed. That's what I'm used to." Trunks offered quietly. Not entirely sure where to go from here, so he was quiet for a few more moments. Before sighing, and getting to his feet.

"In any case, thank you for listening Guri. And explaining some more about your world too. I'd...like us to be friends, but if that's not possible, then at least I'd like there to be no bad blood between us."
marvelous_murderbot: (conversation)

[personal profile] marvelous_murderbot 2021-04-20 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"So you are aware," she added, "I was denied, for most of my existence, control over my own body. It - I - was used without even understanding the concept of self. Please understand, given that, why I prize it so highly now."

It's a pre-condition to being friends, really. It has to be.
light_of_willpower: (long-hair speaking)

[personal profile] light_of_willpower 2021-04-21 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Trunks was quiet for a moment, before speaking again. "I can't promise, that if you're in a dangerous situation and might be a liability, I won't get you out of it. But I'll do my very best to have that only be if necessary, and to get permission otherwise."

[personal profile] marvelous_murderbot 2021-04-21 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"A fair place to start from," she agrees, with a nod.

"Granted, so long as I can avoid combat for entire days, the problem should not recur."
light_of_willpower: (long hair profile talking)

[personal profile] light_of_willpower 2021-04-22 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
"It's not something I'd like to repeat either, for what it's worth." Trunks said, but offered a small smile.

[personal profile] marvelous_murderbot 2021-04-22 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, that we can agree on."

She stood, moved towards him, and offered a hand. "Then let's try starting over."

Because she made decisions, and doubt did not afflict her.
light_of_willpower: (long hair profile talking)

[personal profile] light_of_willpower 2021-04-22 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
He took the hand, firm but friendly. "Thank you. Also, it is nice to meet you." Especially when not giving her a tour of the train, or pulling her out of a battle.
marvelous_murderbot: (Default)

[personal profile] marvelous_murderbot 2021-04-22 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes, in a non-crisis situation, even."
light_of_willpower: (long hair profile talking)

[personal profile] light_of_willpower 2021-04-23 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
"That is helping, yes." Trunks said with a light grin. "If it's not upsetting to you, what have you done with all your newfound freedom? Before the train?" Because he was still curious about her.

"I had just decided to help the Republic build more machines like me to help defeat the remnants of the Galactic Empire, when I was brought here."

She pauses, then:

"Oh, and I ensured the criminal network that used me could never rise again by deleting all its secrets from my head including their command overrides and imprisoned the only potential figure who could have led it."
