So Familiar a Gleam: Start

JINNJAR CITY
"Welcome to Jinnjar City! A city famed as the central power of all of Diagad, and where the magic happens. It has a big history: the birthplace of the first Heroes Association that led to the creation of the Interstellar Justice Alliance, the protectors of the universe. Compared to other places, Diagad's what many people call a superheroes world, but that isn't true. A lot of us don't have the crazy powers that some of the popular folks have! And people like me? We don't care about saving the world! I'm just trying to make it through school, hang out with friends. Live my life!People tell thousands of stories about us though, and that I can be proud of. When other planets call for help, it's us that comes running to their aid. Our heroes put their lives on the line for anyone who needs a hand, and sure, I don't count myself one of them... but I want to share their story anyway.
Well, I don't need to be telling you about this city, do I? You're a part of it! Always have been, just like me. So I should talk about some funny stuff that's been going on lately instead…”
A TL;DR notes version of days/prompts: (click to show)
EVENT BASICS: Un-apped AU characters were taken 1 week before the event from their own worlds, their minds altered to believe they were always from Jinnjar, Diagad. They have a superpower because of this and a new life either living alone or with family (other NPCs or PCs). Go to the OOC post for more info.
DAYS ONE-TWO:
- Strange streams of colour in the sky have appeared, and looking at them for too long causes strange headaches. At this point you’re not sure what they’re about, but you can investigate them. However, trying to get right close to them is impossible. You will never get high enough. Regardless, let us know if characters will be investigating anything!
- Voidtreckers arrive, be on the lookout. People are excited about finding these infamous criminals, and may be bothering those wearing peculiar watches, or the colours of Blue, Red, Purple, or Orange. You might be one of them: the bothered, or botheree. Many games or movie criminals are some adaptation of these Voidtreckers. A lot of people are worried they’re behind the phoenonem in the sky.
- Nevertheless, people will still have their own lives to deal with, regardless of worrying events. Play around with what job your character has, if they’re in school, what work they do; if they’re drawn to a night life or just hanging around wherever they like. Characters not used to technology in-canon may find themselves having trouble with this world (despite believing they’ve always lived here).
- Some of the Voidtreckers who are most resistant to illusions and mind control will be breaking out by the end of the first day. They will have to lay low and plot in secret, figure out how to make contact with others. The SCA comms do not work.
- Other Voidtreckers might begin having dreams about their past by day 2-3.
DAYS THREE-FOUR:
- Those who have been brought to the world begin to dream of their real and past lives, if just in very small and confusing snippets. Some of those dreams may bleed into reality, and people may start to recognise absolute strangers, but don't quite always know why. This is stronger for Voidtreckers than 4th wallers.
- Random electronics seem to be glitching in odd ways, particularly the training centres, which lock people in together, even random strangers. Mostly it's harmless and more of a pain. People also swear they think they see the tops of buildings 'glitching' or colouring out. People have been speaking about pets going missing on walks, though the zoos and such are mostly fine, save for some of the higher up bird sanctuaries.
- More of the Voidtreckers and some of the more resilient guests will begin realising the reality of the place they find themselves in. That this is not their own world at all.
- The propaganda of the city starts to escalate, warnings about the dangerous voidtreckers and reminding people of how great the city is.

DAYS ONE & TWO: SLICES OF LIFE
![]() |
"This is an emergency broadcast to everyone in Jinnjar City. At 08:00 today, a breach into the city was attempted by the invading force known as the Voidtreckers, who have tried countless times before to take over Diagad for themselves. While it's believed the group was resisted, citizen are advised to watch out for anyone acting suspiciously in the city, and to watch out for this emblem. Please call the D-F-O-R-C-E hotline if you see anyone you suspect of being an intruder! Remember to keep low altitudes while we deal with the phenomenon above." |
[ RAINBOW SKIES. ] "Everyone's been speculating about what's been going on up above. About a week ago, these long streams of twisting colours suddenly spread through the purple skies of Diagad, rainbow colours inking the clouds. They've been growing out, like merging with the sky itself, and news broadcasts have been telling people not to worry. But what even are they? They say that looking at them for too long causes headaches, while some swear up and down they've seen things in them! I've heard a couple of friends talking about investigating them, but I dunno..."
▷ Twisting streams of colour are becoming exposed in the sky, and indeed, those who look too long high up will find themselves receiving headaches and dizziness. They’ll fade once you look away, but those who do decide to investigate by getting close will experience a tug, as if something yearns to take them somewhere. There will be patrolling Heroes - this world's equivalent of police - keeping an eye on things. Maybe your character is one of them, or posing as one. Maybe your character wants to learn more about what these are. Regardless, they won’t be able to get significantly close to the streams no matter how high they aim.
[ THE VOIDTRECKERS. ] "Gossip is HOT about these Voidtreckers. I remember seeing a movie about them once, based on something that happened years ago. They tried hacking their way into taking over a dyson sphere being built - like a giant structure around a star. There's other stories about them too, but are they really the ones behind this? Who are we even meant to be on the lookout for? I don't know... I'm kinda spooked. But do they seriously ride around in a flying train?"▷ You've heard about the Voidtreckers, whether you remember stories about them or not. Are you bothered about them? The news broadcasts say they got rid of them - then why are they asking people to look out? And what are you supposed to look out for? On top of the emblem, there's chatter going on about watching out for people wearing strange devices on their wrists, and wearing colours of Blue, Red, Purple, and Orange.
Will you defend your city from these mysterious foes? Be smart about it, or rash? Or maybe you're interested to know more for your own deeds… whether or not they’re the Voidtreckers of tale, they may have resources for furthering your own goals.

[ LIVING YOUR LIFE. ] “But nevermind all that! Life’s about having fun and hanging out with your friends too. I work part time, but I’ve got plans after my shift’s done! Doing some shopping, going to see a movie. I can’t stress out about the funny stuff going on. And I heard the new waiter in my favourite cafe is suuuper cute!”
▷ Despite the few anomalies going on, you still have a life part of Jinnjar City. You have a job filled with devices that you’ve been surrounded by all your life, or certainly longer than a week or, so you know how to work a coffee machine, right? You know how to drive an air taxi!
And where would you take one to? To anywhere: to the gym, one of the training centres, a spa, to the movies - normal things that everyone around the city have always been around. Meet up with some friends for fruit smoothies, or watch one of the shadow displays held by the Georgi’s Gang around every street, putting on shows to mesmerise and delight the kids.
Or how about buying your groceries to take back to your apartment or house? You know what all these fruits are! Right? Right?
… … maybe it’s produce from another planet.

DAYS THREE & FOUR: JUST ANOTHER NORMAL DAY
[ DREAMS. ] “Dreams are just dreams, but a lot of people have been talking about them. Like, really being disturbed by them? Not in a creepy ohhh a monster’s coming for me! way, but like, they say they see worlds they swear they’ve been to before. Or see people? I wouldn’t really think about it except, there’s this guy… not like a super cute guy, but someone I think I knew…”
▷ Talk about dreams have been popular lately, though not everyone has them - or, not right away. Sometimes people may be at work, in school, doing nothing in particular when a name (important to their real self) appears in their mind, a flash of scenery. Coming as quickly as it goes. They don’t know what it means, if it isn’t just a symptom of the latest weird gossip influencing them.
But it sticks with you, something you can’t completely dismiss. But surely it’s nothing - right?
But it sticks with you, something you can’t completely dismiss. But surely it’s nothing - right?
[ ANOMALIES. ] ”Just what we need! My friend’s dog’s gotten lost! She was taking him for a walk, and then she just says he went running ahead, and poof! Disappeared! Maybe he saw a cat? He’s always been a lazy chubby thing, but even dogs can’t help themselves, I guess…”
▷ The colours in the sky seem brighter today, closer...but it’s difficult to say for some, unless you’re actively studying them. Sometimes when you look above, you might catch - if just for a second - the tops of roofs glitching out, corners or streaks erased, colours meshing with the walls. You think it might be the light or your eyes, as it never lasts long, and even standing around waiting to see it happen again won’t give you what you want.
You may have other things to worry about than tricks of the light. Animals have simply been...disappearing, and always the ones owned, or particularly birds that fly around freely. People will ask you for help, and it’s weird they need to. Most owners have a tracker chip and app, and either apps show a blank map, or show them just standing in place...a place that when you get there, is nothing, no one.

[ TRAINING CENTRE. ] “Really though, other than the weird sky business and how jumpy the news has made everyone about the Voidtreckers, the only odd thing that’s been up is some weird stuff happening at the training gyms. Even I saw it! I was just doing my warm-ups for the day when the field I set it to, the sky...these shapes suddenly appeared, dark and looming. It seriously creeped me out. But it’s just a glitch, right?”
▷ Young or old, the training centres around the central district are a popular spot for everyone to give their powers a safe space to be unleashed. While there’s basic simulations that’s free for everyone to use, people can be personal trainers, or even run group sessions in the bigger rooms.
Sessions aren’t always linked, since getting private training is allowed. However, lately, people keep getting jumped into other’s sessions, and can’t get out until they finish the routine. Sometimes they’re simple, where you need to destroy building block-esque cubes, or superspeed through courses twenty times. But then there’s also story modes, such as…
Castle Defence: Help protect the castle of Erna from the tricky Voidtreckers! They’re trying to storm the castle, and the world needs your power to help keep them away. Difficulty is based on the amount of people present, and speed of the individual. Do you turn things green? Then turning a Voidtrecker green will make them pop! Good job!
Kama Aid: Floating spheres have been lured inside a giant 3-tiered labyrinth ball. You must help the spheres - come in optional people-shaped or even cute animals - be released back outside where the air is fresh. Use telekinesis to tilt the tiers like a ball tilting game, or use super-strength to destroy the different tiers!
Dia Mysteries: A theft, vandalism, maybe even a murder. The crime scene is locked down, and something is afoot. Use your telepathy to gain information from the suspects, sneak into a secure area under invisibility... the solution is yours to find in this investigative simulation.
[ A PSA or Six. ] ”Stay vigilant citizens of Diagad. Please report any suspicious behavior to the DFORCE force.”
"Heroes don't keep secrets! If you have suspicions about any dangerous people in our midst, let your local DFORCE force know. Speak the Truth. Save the World."

Announcements blare from speakers on public transport. Adverts pop up as they scroll through Diagnet. All remind citizens to be on their guard, report strange or disturbing behaviour and keep a look out for any of the symbols or colours of the Voidtreckers.
▷ Billboards are plastered with bold posters reminding citizens to keep an eye out for the Voidtreckers or anyone who they might have tried to sway to their side. For those beginning to glimpse that this city might not be what they once had thought, this could be dangerous especially if their families and friends believe the city truly is under threat.

Re: ( wildcard; closed to elidibus )
He had also needed only fifteen minutes of the thirty he had claimed to get to the park and mind the area around the fountain before approaching directly on time.
A young woman with green hair begins walking toward Roland Crane. Or toward the fountain itself, if one prefers to look at it another way. A good memory of the roster will assure Roland this person is... should not be a member of the train's current passengers.
Nothing about her attire stands out. No reds, blues, purples or orange present. If it wasn't the appointed moment 'Olivia Curtis' claimed she would arrive, it might even be brushed off as coincidence that a woman is approaching.
The question is what will Roland do about this conundrum?
no subject
Either a power they gained while being on the planet, or they had this skill when the train took them. Only one way to find out.
He makes a show of nonchalance.
When the women with green hair almost makes it to Roland with only a few short paces between them, Roland pretends to sigh and shrug, carefully pivoting his right foot to walk in the same direction as Olivia Curtis. He rearranges his sling bag over his shoulder and keeps walking until he reaches a corner, where he turns sharply, leading a little further away from the park.
If Olivia Curtis really was a Voidtrecker in sheep's clothing, then it's only natural she would follow him. Of this, Roland is certain. So he waits, leaning across the wall, watching if he'll spot green-hair and roaming eyes pop out from where he just crossed.
no subject
But the woman finally turns to follow the path Roland took. Those eyes do not roam but focus on the goal. Should there be no further play in movement, the green-haired woman closes the distance.
"Roland Crane?" A woman's voice as well. Elidibus can easily make use of the host body's full capabilities. "I trust I am not late?"
'Olivia' uses one had to shift a sleeve up with a hand as anyone might when checking a watch. But the very brief revelation shows the astute that it is an SCA.
no subject
Roland takes a step forward and decides that he's come this far. There's no backing down now.
At least he'll be the only one to pay the price if his gamble goes awry. As it should be.
"You're just in time," he answers under his breath, eyes darting about in careful consideration of their surroundings. When he's certain no one would eavesdrop, not unless they strayed too close, he continues with an edge to his tone. "But I've been around for a while now, Olivia." His gaze keeps to her own, unwavering, searching. "And I don't quite remember your face or your name on the passenger roster." Might as well get it over and done with. He's not quite accusing either; just making sure.
"So, who really are you? Passenger on the Red Team, sleeper one, cabin B?"
no subject
Elidibus has no attachments to Roland and no reason to stick around or return if the situation proves untenable. His vessel can be replaced again.
But for now, Roland Crane is asking the right questions. A female voice is used to answer; the one belonging to the host body. If someone did approach, they would not hear a masculine tone answering Roland.
"I am Elidibus," the woman inclines her head briefly. "You would not recognize this body's form or name as she is not a passenger of the train. Regrettably, the city guard have knowledge of my normal vessel's appearance and are searching for it even as we speak."
There's a lot of information about Elidibus's nature in that answer. Including the attitude that his only concern is that his current 'identity' may make it harder to connect with other awakened voidtreckers.
no subject
It takes all kinds...Talent is talent.
At the very least, the name finally draws recognition, a small spark of it that ebbs any more questions. Elidibus. New, and if he can recall, the same platform passenger as when Tani first came? He nods, loosening the tension collecting by his shoulders. A part of him wants to go back to the idea that his original body sounds like it's running around somewhere trying to evade the police, but there were more important matters at hand.
"Thanks. And sorry for the interrogation. You can't be too sure these days." Especially when you're not as attuned to magic and illusions, no matter how many times he's had to go through it by now. Or that his pendant from friends is doing the most that it can to dispel himself free. "The DFORCE don't know about this special power of yours, right? In any case, Miss Olivia...What were you thinking of doing to get us into congress? My cover is pretty clear, but what about yours?"
The internship is one thing, but did Elidibus pick a...'vessel' that could get them in without a hitch, just as their message on DiagNet prescribed? Roland's all ears, ready to work, no-nonsense with arms crossed over his chest. Any lead is a good lead at this point, and he gives the impression that he's worked with teams as intimate as two people before, eager to do his fair share of the plan.
no subject
And don't worry about the original body. It's fine.
"It's to be expected," the woman responds politely and with a nod of acceptance for such necessity. Elidibus pauses to consider the proposed question. "I do not believe that's the case," comes the reply. "This ability is not part of the... gifts this false world has bestowed." 'Olivia's'- no, Elidibus's disdain is clear.
But when it comes to the matter of obtaining access to Congress? Admittedly, this hadn't been too much of a concern for a variety of reasons. "Hm. I responded to your message to make contact with another passenger. This vessel was chosen out of necessity rather than intent." Not his preferred method of choice, but the random selection had probably helped confuse those who were following him.
There is a pause while Olivia Curtis's memories are sorted through. "No, it seems this vessel will not be of any use for more than the public venues of Congress." Elidibus looks up at Roland again. The gaze seems interested. "Though that covers much as it is. And I can make arrangements for private areas if need be. Tell me. How did you arrive at the conclusion that Congress needs be investigated?"
It's not surprise that has Elidibus asking the question. There's a number of reasons that lead to a logical conclusion that a place like the Congress must be examined more closely. What Elidibus is truly asking after is what method does Roland specifically use.
no subject
Roland takes a cursory glance around them, careful not to look too suspicious, and begins to walk slow towards the building, confident that Elidibus would follow. He speaks in regular tones as he does so; two cognizant folks hiding under plain sight until the time was right.
"Before I woke up from the illusions, I was a student in the university. I'm minoring in History." A small crowd meets them counterflow, bumping shoulders and apologizing under his breath, but otherwise, neither of them meet further resistance. "I worked at the library too. I noticed a couple of things that run similar to what I noticed every time I came close to the congress building."
They stop a few ways away from its general oversight, an imposing building that lay center of Jinnjar; Roland's goal from the moment he understood that something was indeed, not right. Arms cross over his chest as he adds more, glancing over at Olivia though intending his words to carry to his fellow passenger underneath the façade.
"There's...this weird pulse in the books that recall how Diagad came to be. It doesn't read right. History books aren't supposed to read like once-upon-a-time's." Like fairy tales without conflict; where the bad guys lose and the good guys win. "It's the same weird feeling I get when I attend history lectures about the city. Like nobody seems to want to ask questions. Everybody's just nodding along." He breaks gazes and stares at the building once more. Roland's eyes narrow some, until they close completely, breathing in and out as deep as he can allow himself to relax.
There. There it is again.
"Can't you feel it? Look at that place. It's...I can't explain it. But whatever it is I felt when I read those books and when I attended class, it's in there except it's stronger. Louder. And if I know anything about these missions, where there's smoke, there's fire. This isn't coincidence. If we need answers, they're most likely going to be tucked away at the center of the city. I'm sure of it."
no subject
"You perceive better than most," the woman answers. "The books themselves compel those who read them to not question. It is but one of many traps in this world to keep those trapped within complacent."
Not all of it can be avoided. But being aware should help. It certainly seems that way in Roland's case. Elidibus follows through the flow of the crowd, though his path keeps him from colliding with anyone. It is only simple calculation and perhaps the other's own collision giving forewarning; nothing special. But at least he does not have to apologize.
Once the other group passes, the woman steps to Roland's side again. She pauses as he does, glancing at the building in question before letting her attention settle on the more intriguing subject; the reaction Roland is having. Elidibus is given pause to consider the matter.
"Hm. Then when you stopped, it is not to observe the building. Is it because you find it difficult to proceed?" Well it seems as no surprise if nothing else. The Ascian looks between Roland and the observable area between them and the building. The latter region is studied momentarily. "I believe you are correct however."
Then the woman turns away so they can retrace their steps somewhat; away from the undue influence. "Let us withdraw for the moment."
Not far. But somewhere they could continue speaking without being troubled. If Roland agrees, the way will be led to a quiet place that makes it difficult to see the building at all. "I admit I know little of the entity behind these works," Elidibus comments. "Unfortunately I let my reading into Voidspace take priority over the reports of former missions." Hindsight is ever perfect, isn't it?
no subject
With very little to hide, Roland admits his own plans and limitations. Magic and energy...these were never his forte. But he is nothing if not stubborn and determined, seeing it as nothing but another obstacle to overcome. The moment they're free from rapt gazes and unwanted attention, Roland continues his reply.
"I can't get past this by myself. I knew it'd be impossible anyway, even before I tried." He crosses his arms back over his chest. "This place gave us powers, right? Mine seems to be some sort of foresight...I watched people come and go from congress before I realized it wasn't my vision that was glitching. It was because something was stopping my power from predicting what happened the moment someone entered. The same pulse of energy in the books, the same energy in class. It's careful, though. Whoever did this knew what they were doing."
Far from sloppy work.
Roland assesses 'Olivia' once more, taking his time now. He gives an impression that everything he says is not without reason or thought. Now more than ever, every single one of them had to move carefully. All these eyes upon them, all this hatred for the so-called heroes of the void. They were not among friends here, and it's palpable. Still. Roland can admire someone who took time out to read about their predicament, however shoddy some of the train-prescribed literature can be. He'll follow this intuition with his own knowledge of things, compounded from months upon months of his own careful research. Musings that had nowhere to go but the pages of his personal notes.
"All we know about the entity is that it started becoming more prominent in the past couple of missions, each more involved in breaking out of illusions than the last. We don't know anything about it apart from what it's doing, and that it could be a remnant of a world that no longer exists-" He gestures to everything around them with a careful wave of his hand. "-Diagad."
He wonders how honest he can be. Well. Roland can't sit on his own ideas forever.
"...Though truth be told, something tells me this being's been around a lot longer than we might think. It's personal conjecture at this point, but we'd be fools to assume our missions are disconnected from each other. This is all leading us somewhere."
If only they were in more peaceful circumstances. He'd have his journal ready in the waiting.
no subject
Elidibus chose a place that may have been discreet but follows the precept that Roland first lay- they are nothing more than two individuals talking. Not in shadows or subversively. The Ascian remains observant as it wouldn't do to be overheard or of someone started paying too much attention. But this overwatch is also discreet. As long as an outsider doesn't get lucky, there should be no unfortunate interruptions.
"It was never in question the power behind this has immense skill and talent," Elidibus agrees. "Where they obtain the aether required to create and maintain this cage would be an important question to find answers for."
The Ascian is working on reading anything the train and other residents have provided in the library. That included the children's tales. But it is still probably lacking and certainly made no mention of this entity. As Roland speaks about it, Elidibus pays close attention. The eyes of the body he inhabits narrow a trifle.
"The remnant of a world, you say. From your view, would you say that refers to a being from a certain world or the world itself?" Both schools of thought seem equally valid in Elidibus's view.
"Has the world named Diagad been mentioned during previous missions by this entity?"
no subject
Well, that's new. Roland shakes his head some. "I'm sorry. I wouldn't know. It was just a voice that appeared at the tail-end of our last mission." He wasn't present at the time of its bellowing remark, but he's heard enough from accounts thereafter. Tidus and Masumi were vocal about what they saw, and even then, Roland overheard the booming voice that threatened their entire mission as it succumbed to chaos every which way.
Even now, he isn't sure what to make of having both Erda and Kamakan missions come consecutively.
His expression falls pensive, half in thought and half in memory. "No sky is real. They will all crumble to ash...Diagad had purple skies." Roland's eyes meet 'Olivia's' keenly. "Before that, we were basically threatened before it retreated, saying it'll get us eventually. I will find a place. I will find a home. And you will all pay. You will not stop me."
The impression Roland leaves is one of vigilance. He's been tracking the happenings around the void space since he first arrived on the train and it shows simply by the ease of how he remembers, that he makes routine out of study and personal musing. Whether or not he's saying everything he wants to say to Elidibus however, is another question entirely.
no subject
And 'Olivia' meets Roland's gaze in kind. Elidibus is calm and someone with Roland's observational skills will probably note that most of his explanations are being received with an intellectual's level of observation. What follows is thought on the words themselves, rather than the impact of the being who uttered them to Elidibus on a personal level.
"Is it safe to presume this sparked no recognition in those who are... or were passengers any have been aware of? When I had first arrived as a passenger, thought we were cut off from the age the Void Ministry and its travels existed in. Though perhaps that is truly not the case?"
Unless this entity has been around for millennia. Which... well, wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility by Elidibus' standards.
