Memory Cave

After the passengers see a glimpse of a life that is not their own they appear in a cave. It is light, a strange moss glowing on the walls and ceiling illuminates the cave nicely and it is large enough for them to pace around in without trouble.

They are not alone. In the cave with them is another voidtrecker. Maybe someone they know well, maybe someone they have only seen in the aisles of the train. But they are together in this cave together.

The cave has no exit, at least not yet. They know that it will, eventually. When the time is right.

But for that time to come, they first must talk...

“Yeah, that would have been him.”

[Masumi went quiet after that, struggling to find a way to avoid having to talk about her first memory. As much as she didn’t want to think about it, it made sense that they would have to talk about the memories to get out of the cave, but that would mean letting someone in on the secret.]

“...Are you sure? That memory was supposed to be secret.” [And in there was the unstated question if he could keep the secret if told. Even here, even if she was away from her own world, she couldn’t let word get out.]

I'm sure. I know certain memories are hard to explain and for good reason, but I also would have no reason to say anything about them outside of here. Besides... That wouldn't be a very nice thing to do.

[It wouldn't any way at least in his mind and he also understood that some memories no matter how long they are still can hurt sometimes.]

"...Alright. If it's the only way out."

[It took a moment for her to figure out how to explain the memory, and when she did manage to start speaking she was quiet, clearly hesitant to be saying any of this.]

"Someone, I don't know who, poisoned my mom in an attempt to kill her. She lived, but the poison made her shrink into the body of a middle schooler. I've been helping her stay hidden and was trying to find an antidote for her so that she can reverse the effects.

In the memory you saw, I was calling her because I found out that there was definitely an antidote. She wanted me to get it so that she could return to normal and track down the attacker."

[She went silent after explaining the memory, unhappy with having to spill the secret. But only for a moment, since she still had things to say.]

"I know whoever tried to kill her probably isn't on the train and I'm away from my world, but I didn't want to risk it getting out."

That's understandable why you wouldn't want people knowing that.

[Hee also understood that you honestly never know if there is going to be people from you world coming here either. So he really did understand wanting to keep it a secret.]

We don't know when people from our world might come here as well. It's a shame you didn't get the antidote before you came here though... I assume that you didn't manage it.

"Yeah. There's already people from my world here, though I haven't talked to any of them about this."

[She hadn't talked to any of them yet. She's working on that, though.]

"...No, I didn't actually get it for her. I got pulled to the train platform right after that call, so I never got the chance to actually get it for her."

[It's a sore point for her, knowing that she'd finally found proof of an antidote and was able to tell her mom it existed, only to wind up being yanked from her world before she could do anything.]

That's really unfortunate that you couldn't. The train seems to pick up people at points where you wouldn't want to. Though for you it was much worse point to be pulled here from than say myself, so I am really sorry you couldn't get it.

But if the train does take you back you'll at least then get the chance.

Maybe open their doors soon?

"I don't think I could have gotten it that exact day, but I was hoping to get it soon before I got pulled here. Hopefully I'll get that chance."

[There wasn't much else to say on either of her memories, so Masumi just stayed silent for a few seconds before speaking again.]

"...You aren't hiding anything from what I saw, are you?" [She didn't think so, but she wanted to make sure there was nothing being hidden if talking was going to help here.]

[He shook his head slightly.]

I have no reason to really lie.

[What was there he could have lied about was a thought that went in his head at least, but soon he was looking around before spotting something.]

Can I ask if they were there before?

[Masumi looks around too, and easily spots the doors that definitely weren't there before.]

"No, I don't think those were there before. If they were, I wouldn't have said anything about my memories."

[It was true, she would have just given a minimum of info then left to preserve the secret rather than give up everything she knew if the way out had been there all along.]

"...I guess that means we talked enough, if those are our ways out."

I guess that is true.

[he might not have said anything either, though then again his weren't as personal as the others in a way. Something you wouldn't want others to know about.]

Seems so. At least we have to hope we haven't worried anyone by going missing suddenly as well.

“Yeah, I sure hope we aren’t worrying people right now.”

[Masumi goes to leave, then pauses and turns to face Yugi again.]

“Thanks for promising to keep my memories secret. The last thing I need is word spreading, even if we’re not at home right now.”

[The key being right now. People could still go home, and who knew who could show up on the train next.]
