Memory Cave

After the passengers see a glimpse of a life that is not their own they appear in a cave. It is light, a strange moss glowing on the walls and ceiling illuminates the cave nicely and it is large enough for them to pace around in without trouble.

They are not alone. In the cave with them is another voidtrecker. Maybe someone they know well, maybe someone they have only seen in the aisles of the train. But they are together in this cave together.

The cave has no exit, at least not yet. They know that it will, eventually. When the time is right.

But for that time to come, they first must talk...

"They created the perfect assassin."

He didn't know what else to say about it. It's what he was, it's what he was always intended to be, and what he always would be. There was no getting around it or trying to change it.

That never ended well.

"No wonder you reacted like you did back in Gyueran..." He was built to reject the possibility of teamwork, or family. In a way, he was what she'd wanted to become, after her mother had-- well. That hadn't exactly worked out.

"So... you're the only one left? Didn't you ever think of just... walking away from it all?"

47 made no comment about her assessment of him and his reaction to their conversation on that planet. She could think what she liked. She might not even be wrong.

There were two ways he could answer this set of questions. Either direction had him ignoring one or the other. He went with sarcasm in the end. It might have sounded odd to her ears--it had been a while since he had put this much flavor into his tone. A good, long while.

"And doing what? Taking up gardening and working at a church in a small, secluded town?"

"'How I live is up to me'," she echoed, from her words to Sazh back on that Cocoon evening. "Though I was thinking more... taking out the system that did that to you, and to the others. But if you're more the gardening kinda guy..."

He made an unamused noise. "That isn't walking away," he replied. "That's getting revenge."

He had tried to walk away. He had attempted to retire and live out a life of peace. It had been hard but the hobby and the religion had helped mitigate some of his restlessness. In the end though it hadn't been enough to keep it away. The rest of the world had said no, he was too good to let slip away, and had forced him back into the fold. And then he'd realized that the Father was wrong; he could never be something he wasn't. He would have to live life the only way he knew how.

"After Dr. Ort-Meyer was finished, there were no more trails to my past. As far as I was concerned, that was it. The people who had created me were gone. My life was mine to live very early on."

But what else would a trained killer do but hunt and kill targets? He was an assassin. He made good money at it. Lived an easy life for it. But he knew nothing else and that was all there was to it.

"... Guess you're right. The doctor really did a good job, huh." She looked away, lips pursed. "Wonder why no fal'Cie ever tried making l'Cie like he made you? Easier to--"

Well, hadn't she been raised in a closed space, trained, fed lies? Hadn't she turned on her sister, when it counted most? Resigned to her fate, hadn't she gone ahead with her Focus?

Maybe that was exactly what the fal'Cie had done. She thought, again, about Raines, and his resignation to his role, in the end. "Never mind."
