Let it Snow: Blue Start

The moment the doors open for purple to jump the train is speaking again. “Blue team to doors. Void shift imminent. Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one” The train lurches and shudders as the windows flash the colour of the void for a split second before it shakes again and they are back in that frozen tundra.

The doors open and blue can jump down into a large snowdrift. They are at the foot of an impressive mountain range. Snow swirls around them, the wind hows. Ahead of them, half obscured by snow is a tunnel entrance.

Even getting there is exhausting, wading through the snow. Inside there is no snow but it is cold. The walls and floor shine with ice and the way is treacherous. It is pitch black.

Their task is to find those hiding in the tunnels. Some have formed makeshift camps in large caverns, others have fled into the small tunnels and have gotten themselves lost.

The voidtreckers are lucky to at least have a map on their SCA though it does not show where anybody else it. It is time to start the task of rounding everyone up and making sure they can survive the storm.

"He is your friend because of your magic?" Romeo waved at the bear, not finding it too strange. After all the gods in the heavens had all sorts of powers.

"He looks like a good friend!"

They would keep each other safe, so that was good!

The bear stared at him, looking as if he was trying to decide if this boy was a threat or not. It was only the soft warm touch of Naminés hand that kept it from lunging forward.

"He is. The snow creatures here... I don't think they want to die. Even if many of them have been created by the storm." It made her sad though she knew that they had to save the town and the people here.

She knew what it was like to be created against her will and placed in a difficult position. "I am a witch and... my magic lets me change peoples memories." She sounds sad when she admits her powers but with Terra on the train there was no point in trying to keep it a secret. There were people who already knew.

That was really sad. He hadn't even thought that the snow creatures here might not want to die. He had sort of thought they were like ayakashi, but easier to destroy because they were made of snow.

But if they had feelings. If they didn't want to die. Then it was bad to hurt them, especially if they were just working for some bad boss who was making them be bad and hurt them.

He blinked at her. "Memories? How do you change a memory?"

He knew you could take memories away. But changing one, that sounded strange.

He looked at the snow bear again, wondering if there was anyway to stop all this fighting so no one died.

Naminé was speculating. Her understand of the world and various situations were born from her own unusual birth and captivity. She knew what it was like to be born without memories, locked in that cold castle and alone. The organization had eventually found her and used her but they hadn't been there at first. She'd been lost in the castle and only a shell of a person.

"I put myself in the place of someone else. The memory stays the same. It is... much harder to change memories and longer." She would freeze to death if she tried to do that here.

"I'm sorry." Her voice becomes softer. "I know... that isn't nice."

"No." Romeo shook his head, "It's not very nice at all." He doesn't sound mad though. Because he's not mad. He's more just confused, he doesn't know why a nice person like Namine would do a bad thing like that.

"So you pretend to be peoples friends in their head?" Was that what she meant by taking the place of someone else?

"Why don't you just be their friend for real?"

"No!" Her response was sudden and frantic. "I just..."

Her fingers curled around her chest as a sudden pang of guilt shot through her heart. She had manipulated Sora's memories and while she had fixed her mistake, it hadn't changed what she'd done; even if Sora didn't remember any of it.

"I-" She didn't want to use these powers again but she hadn't known what else to do. "I don't. I just didn't want anyone to get hurt."

Even as she spoke, it felt like an excuse. "I'm... sorry."

He feels guilty the moment she apologises and looks like she feels bad. He hadn't wanted her to be upset. He was just trying to understand why she would do such a bad thing even though she was really good and nice and made everyone get well cards!

But if she had done something bad by accident, because she didn't want anyone to get hurt. That made more sense.

"It's okay miss Namine!" He stepped closer to her, keeping an eye on that snow bear. "If you're sorry then you can correct your mistake and it will be alright!"

"I-" Her voice caught in her throat as she looked over at the towering snow bear. "I just wanted to keep everyone safe entering the cave. I hadn't meant to-" The pain in her voice was audible as she placed her palm on the bears side.

"You should go now." The bear whined softly as it turned and began to lumber down the cave tunnel. It stopped a few times and looked back but Naminé continued to urge it forward. She'd have to wait until it was outside the cave to release the spell, to keep those hiding here safe, but she would because she'd been keeping the bear around for her own selfish reasons.

She didn't look back at Romeo but kept her gaze on the snowy cave floor. "I'm sorry."

"It's okay miss!" He reached forward for her hand. Because she looked so sad and like she really felt bad for doing what she had done.

"You let him go now and you realised you had done a bad thing. So now you can make it better. I'm not bad and I don't think mister bear was mad either!"

Naminé wondered, not for the first time, if she'd done something really bad. That bear was a creature made of snow. It didn't have a future like the rest of them did. It knew rage, loneliness and loss. Would it all really be okay?

"He wasn't. I know he wasn't." Not yet.

She looked up at Romeo and forced herself to smile. "Thank you."

"It's okay! Come on miss Namine, let's go further in. It might be warmer there!"

It's very cold!

He smiled at her, worried about her and trying to think of a way to help keep her spirits up.

"Ah. Yes. Let's go."

She nodded her head firmly, determination taking command of her features. They had work to do and people to protect. "Is everyone inside now? Are they safe?"

"Yes! Everyone got in and we started finding people in the tunnels. There's lots more people to get though. I think they ran far away because they were scared."

He would have ran far away as well, so he doesn't blame them! It must be scary for your home to be turned into a blizzard and attacked by ice creatures!

"At least they're safe." She smiled over at Romeo. "That's what matters most and if the other teams do their job, they can return home soon."

Naminé was very hopeful.

"Is there anything I can do to help? Maybe find more blankets?"

"Yes! I bet the other teams will do a great job and they can all go home in no time!" He has every faith in them!

He smiled, "That's a good idea. I think everyone brought blankets so we shoul gather them all up so we know how many we got and hand them out!"

"Right!" She smiled and became more animated with something to do that might help. "Let's do that. I think it'd be good to pass out what we can. If we need more... maybe we can see about making a trip back to town. There might be blankets there too."

Naminé paused. "Do you think that's okay or should we ask the people here? I don't know what's... normal."

"Maybe we should ask first! It's really cold out there and if they know where we should go then we can go quicker!"

Because if they tried to go without knowing where the blankets were a lot of time would be wasted looking for them! People in this town would know the best place to go!

"Let's see what we've got first then we can talk to mister Ignis and the people from the town and decide what to do next!"

Naminé inclined her head in a quick decisive nod. "Okay." She liked the idea since she didn't want to take anything without asking first anyway.

"Let's go."

"Yes! Let's go!" Romeo smiled at her and led the way back further into the cave where they had began gathering all the people.
