Orange Team Onward!

Arrival

Their flight path makes sure they are well out of the way of both the battles taking place and they get to the shield station within an hour as long as they fly quickly.

There are no enemy ships around but it is clear there has been an attack, the shield disk itself is damaged and there seems to be no power in the station.

Once they dock they will be met by some technicians who quickly explain the situation.

Help is needed everywhere. The power needs repaired, the shield needs repaired from the outside, there are injured technicians who need medical care. There is a small med-bay available.

Maintenance

Once the initial crisis is dealt with it is a case of keeping up with things. A patrol is needed to guard the station from other attacks, there are four shield stations in total and so the voidtreckers may chose to split themselves once things are a little calmer.

Keeping up the shields is an almost constant job, especially with the attacks. Once one thing is fixed it seems another thing is down. The maintenance itself is very technical but there are parts that can be done by the unskilled as long as they have direction.

Curufin is standing in the docking bay turning the metal plate over in his hands. He touches its center in order to activate it, not sure whether that will get him an Samata-hologram or some other kind of response. He hadn't had time to ask for details when he received the plate.

He waits to see what will happen.

Nothing, for a few seconds. Samata checked the area first, looking out through the farseeing rune on the plate to make sure he wasn't trying to be stealthy.

When she determined that he wasn't, she activated the simulacrum and a full sized Samata appeared standing on the plate as if it was flat ground, regardless of what angle Curufin was holding it at. It's possible his head would be in her knees or something, in which case he could see that the inside of the "hologram" was just full of light. It was like holding a lightbulb right up to your eye.

"Hello, monsieur. Is everything proceeding as planned?"

Curufin, stealthy? No, never. XD Not at the present time, that is.

He was still holding the plate in his two hands as though it were a dinner plate, so the Samata simulacrum was standing up vertically on the surface. He blinked, a little startled. He was accustomed to visions and to palantir images, but this was more abrupt and realistic. It looked more like a thing of science than a thing of the imagination or the visionary faculty.

"Hello, Madam Samata! Yes, so far, everything is going well. Progressing, anyway. I was just checking in with you to make sure this device worked, and to see how Team Red was doing. My dad's on your team, by the way. . . Fëanor. I don't know if you've interacted with him yet."

les_magique: (There's a perfectly good explanation)

[personal profile] les_magique 2020-03-19 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm...not actually with the red team. They're doing a daring commando raid of some sort, and I'm not much of a fighter or a sneakthief, so I thought my talents would be better demonstrated with the blue team." Less people shooting at her there. "But I am pleased to see that it does appear to be working just fine. I'm kind of figuring this out as I go, and I wasn't entirely positive it would."

[personal profile] so_dark_a_road 2020-03-20 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, right. So you're on the military station with Blue Team. If things are going well there, does that mean the Empire isn't shooting at your station?" He hopes not.
les_magique: (I might be out of spells right now)

"There have been some tense moments, but we're still alive. This whole world is like NOTHING I've seen before, so I'm sort of figuring it out as I go."
so_dark_a_road: (among the contending princes)

[personal profile] so_dark_a_road 2020-03-22 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
"That's good! I hope that you and Blue Team may all survive! Yes, I understand. This world is nothing like mine, and not much like anything I've seen since I left my own world. What else can we do but figure it out as we go, play it by ear?" He smiles at her.

"What is your own world like, if I may ask?"
les_magique: (Let me explain you a thing)

[personal profile] les_magique 2020-03-23 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
"That's kind of a big question. Maybe...put me down, first?"

If he was still holding the transmission plate, he would be kind of looking up at her.

"I've spent most of my adult life living at the capital as a student at the university. It's a big, dirty port city full of hundreds of different cultures. Every block feels like it has it's own unique aesthetic. It's loud, and it stinks, and you can get robbed blind if you don't pay attention, and it's been the best few years of my life." She smiled faintly, eyes full of memories. It didn't stay there, though.

"Of course, the sorcerers have run things for hundreds of years, so they can do basically whatever they want. They've always held the power because until recently they've always been the ones with the magic."

[personal profile] so_dark_a_road 2020-03-23 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
He grins. "Okay, I'll put you down." He sets the plate on the floor. Now the two of them are more on a level.

He listens. "It sounds. . . kind of fun. . . to be a student. I don't have that experience, since my world only had a few institutions that might be called colleges, and I didn't attend one."

Sorcerers? "The magic-users are at the top of the social and political pyramid in your world? Sounds like something has gotten out of balance there!"
les_magique: (We did it!)

[personal profile] les_magique 2020-03-23 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
"According to the church, the fact that they can use magic is proof of their divine favor, which is why they deserve to be in charge. I've always believed that was true, because it's just what I grew up with. But now..."

A proud look. "Let's just say I'm reevaluating my beliefs as I go. Obviously, if only sorcerers can do magic I wouldn't be able to make something like this!"
so_dark_a_road: (green army jacket)

[personal profile] so_dark_a_road 2020-03-23 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
"What's a church?" he asks. "In my world, magic-users aren't privileged, except in that they get to enjoy having a reputation for competence in such skills. Most of them are decent people, but a few of them are not."

Curufin is a magic-user himself, though he doesn't do it often outside of his metalsmithing work. He knows about misusing magic, because he did it himself during the last years of his life in his own world. He is now a reformed man (Elf-man, that is) now, but he can imagine what a mess it would have been if he had achieved any real authority while he was still confused about right and wrong.

"Good for you, that you are thinking for yourself! So you are not a sorcerer yourself? Just a magic-user who knows how to use magic for the benefit of others?"
les_magique: (Rise up my brothers and sisters!)

[personal profile] les_magique 2020-03-23 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
She'll get to the church question in a moment, because Curufin had just hit one of Samata's rant buttons.

"I am absolutely NOT a sorcerer! I am a wizard! I was born without a drop of magical talent in my veins, but through careful experimentation and a WHOLE lot of math, I have determined that magic is not a divine power it's a force of nature! It's possible for ANYONE to manipulate it if they know how!" She said, with a certain amount of passion. "When I get back home, I will keep on teaching other people how to be wizards, and within a generation, we will have made sorcerers obsolete!"

"Oh, I see. I was distracted by the semantics. A sorcerer and a wizard are very different, then, in your world. I respect your efforts to determine the origin of magical powers. The people in my world would agree with you -- that magic is not in fact a divine gift but a force of nature. You seem very sure of this, and very passionate about it. I admire that passion, and your desire to be a teacher of wizardry."
les_magique: (Let me explain you a thing)

[personal profile] les_magique 2020-03-24 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
"Just...so we know where we stand. I promise the math checks out." She has it all in her spellbook, which was sitting on the table by her physical body. "I actually made up the word Wizard myself. It's based on an old word for 'wisdom', because we use our minds to master magic, while sorcerers simply have it in their blood. I was surprised to learn that the word exists in other planes of reality!"

He nods. "I believe you. Although I would be curious as to how the math helped you figure it all out. I know some math, having studied modern engineering. You thought up the word wizard yourself? Nice. Ah, I see. The wizards are the intellectuals of the magical world, whereas the sorcerers are merely the ones who use magic by intuition. Those words do both exist on other planes of reality. We have both words in my world."
