Memory Cave

After the passengers see a glimpse of a life that is not their own they appear in a cave. It is light, a strange moss glowing on the walls and ceiling illuminates the cave nicely and it is large enough for them to pace around in without trouble.

They are not alone. In the cave with them is another voidtrecker. Maybe someone they know well, maybe someone they have only seen in the aisles of the train. But they are together in this cave together.

The cave has no exit, at least not yet. They know that it will, eventually. When the time is right.

But for that time to come, they first must talk...

"Make that the both of us. Being stuck on that train is a special kind of torment." It was loud, there was no privacy, he was surrounded by food people all of the time. There was never a break from it. There was never a break from the smell of blood, the sound of their hearts, the sound of all of their conversations coalescing into just a buzz in his ears.

"I don't think many people noticed. I certainly thought nothing of it until I remembered it earlier and then ended up here." He gave a sharp exhale and a wry smile. "I really wish this was a break. Instead we're digging up each others' memories. I thought the lack of privacy was bad enough on the train, you know?" Not that it was her fault. She didn't ask for this just as much as he didn't ask for it. He found his own rock to sit on, examining his nails.

"So, what did you do, exactly?"

"I was a grad student. I was planning to go into academia and spend my years doing a lot of reading and lecturing. Maybe write a few papers that became enormously famous in very small and esoteric circles but remained totally unknown by the general populace."

A quiet life. It still sounded nice, but she didn't feel like she could go back to it now. Her eyes had been opened too much, and she had annoyed too many powerful people.

"I don't think it's going to happen, at this point. You saw the memory. That city was my home, and it was on fire because I couldn't shut up."

Uta couldn't stop himself from smiling a bit at her response. That wasn't what he really wanted to know. If she had done that on purpose it was absolutely something he would do to avoid answering the actual question. The smile faded as he spoke.

"So you spoke up about the fact you could cast magic and that put a target on your back? Does that about sum it up?"

OH that's what he meant.

"No, I just...started teaching people wizardry. When they told me to stop I told them to stick it where the sun doesn't shine. I didn't even think about how that would put them out of power until much later, but by that point I was committed."

He was almost surprised that she hadn't been intentional with overthrowing some regime, but what she said before removed the surprise. She had big dreams: to become famous and important, but in such a way that she was out of the spotlight. Being the leader of a revolution was definitely not out of the public view. Things also hadn't gone entirely according to plan either.

Uta was acutely aware that they were very different from each other. They approached problems from vastly different points of view.

"Ah, I see." He lowered his gaze back down to his nails. "I know it may not mean much coming from a stranger, but I'm sorry your home ended up embroiled in conflict." It sounded as if he knew something about what that felt like.

"Thank you, I just get carried away, sometimes. I'm hoping that as bad as things are right now, when we come out the other side things will be better."

She lapsed into silence a bit, thinking about home.

"...What about you? What happened to Renji? How did you end up in...whatever Liminal Space is? If you don't mind me asking."

Getting carried away is something that Uta could definitely relate to. Being quite a cynic he had nothing positive to say about how things may turn out, so he simply held his tongue. He may have something to add if circumstances were different and she were at home - it takes one person to make a difference, but they were here, she was not at home, so who was to say that her world wouldn't be obliterated by the time she made it home.

"I fear my life at home is not quite as exciting. I eventually opened my shop and made masks for people. Renji-kun and I are actually very good friends and we spent quite a bit of time together." They grew strong together, really. His next comment is quite has a note of sadness. "He was doing well when I was taken." He paused for a moment to ruminate, then continued.

"Making it to Liminal was much like ending up on the platform for the train. You're home one moment, somewhere else the next. I had a meeting with the being that took me from my home, though. They were less inclined to keep us in the dark."
