The Will to Fight: Finale: All teams
The Far Gate
Given that people have scouted ahead, it will be no surprise when those who arrive at the Red objective find an army of demons there. Unlike the other packs they have encountered, these ones are not roaming, and don't appear to be heading towards the city. Instead, they are guarding something.
A gate. It is larger than the others they have seen so far by an order of magnitude, and if there are this many demons outside, the keystone must be guarded just as well.
For those who are actually on the red team their SCA will flash up a message: This gate has multiple keystones. It is the focal point for other gates closer to the city. Close it.
Around the City
In the Caverns
Once the rockfall was cleared, those that wished to could make their way back towards the city. They might come across demons on the way, small packs scouting the land and hunting survivors, but for the most part their way will be clear until they get to the city and to the Voidtrecker camp.
For everyone else, there are plenty of non-combatants that need protecting. The cavern itself remains warded against demons, but patrols still pass and keeping everyone safe and hidden is important.
Almost all the citizens have thrown off the mind control now. Some of the younger children have started having nightmares, and keeping everyone positive and calm is harder than it was before with a goal in sight.
In the City
The sigils hum and glow. For those feeding them power it's a very long couple of days; though once the monks are free they join in, brusquely waving off any questions or concern about their wellbeing to focus on the task at hand: protecting the city. They will of course accept any extra energy. The wards are not meant to go out completely, it will take a lot of energy to restart them.
By the eleventh day it is clear something else is wrong. Some of the focus stones on the city walls are out of place, either knocked awry in the battles before the false peace, or sabotaged by demons. Either way, for the wards to fully activate they will need those not giving energy to go out onto the walls, to find the stones and align them. It's not too technical but might be dangerous, because outside the walls, a fight is about to begin…
The Battle for the City
The attacks have gotten more frequent but on the evening of day ten they stop. Silence. No gates open, no demons attack. The whole night is spent in a tense, almost eerie silence.
It is broken at dawn the next day, two massive gates open, one to the north of the city and one to the south. Demons march out, heading towards the city.
Not just demons, they each have two large structures, siege machines. It seems they wish to knock this city down completely, securing their victory over the humans.

All this fighting and attacking and only NOW was the Overlord of this place showing up? Zetta was furious at the delay, glaring balefully at the gate as if he was going to wither this incoming demon with his gaze alone. Of course, his army of minions had formed ranks, staves and swords and spears leveled at the gate, and for some reason a starfighter stolen several missions ago now zipping in a holding pattern around the gate, just waiting to rain some arbitrary-energy-bolts down on an incoming foe.
"Now this Netherworld will be be mine! Hyaaaha ha ha ha ha!"

The spider appears between the demon gate and the city in a blaze of spatial distortion, and if she'd survived on Earth long enough to see the Avengers, she'd totally have made a quip about assembling or whatever, as she holds her spatial tear open for others at the camp to step through. Come on, come on! She's not about to solo this, okay?

city walls-a stone quest
He points at a pile of rubble as he walks to it, rolling up the sleeves of his hoodie. "Something should be in there."
The problem with looking through the monocle is that it somewhat restricts his field of vision. He's keeping his ears open, but it's dangerous work out here.
no subject
A monocle was definitely not in Kaiba's wardrobe the last time she'd seen him. Of course, a lot can change in this bizarre city, for better or for worse, and yet here is Bulma anyway, regarding the pile he says they ought to start digging in with a bit of a raised brow.
"So what does that track?" Bulma reaches up, then, indicating his eye. "The monocle."
She's not any use digging, so she's not even going to try.

Bucky/Soldat | Red team guest | Targeting Keystones
There's a few minutes before Red Team (and companions) actually enter the fray, while they gather and prepare over a hill, mostly out of sight (one hopes, anyway). Soldat is buzzing from person to person in the group. They're doling out the last of their edible supply so everyone has energy for the fight-- mostly carb-based, and a few bites of cookies they'd been saving, for some fast energy. They're checking bandages on current wounds to make sure everything will hold and nobody's going to bleed out in the first few minutes of the fight.
And they're actively chewing on a pendant from a thin chain around their neck. Keeps them from eating anything they're not supposed to out of nerves, and also makes a nice outlet for anxiety in general. Even if it looks kind of ridiculous.
Now's your time to make plans, snag them for last words, or shove them off from fussing too much.
II. Getting There - OTA to folks at the Far Gate
There's a lot of goddamn demons between Soldat and that gate. The big one won't be hard to avoid, there's a lot of people keeping that one busy and avoiding big things like that is easier than it sounds, but it's the horde of smaller ones they're concerned with.
Frankly, they're not even aiming for killing, now. They're aiming for disabling any foes just enough to fly by and get to that gate. If they can close that gate, then the demons will be cut off, and they can route them. That's the important thing, and that's what Soldat has been practicing over and over for five days now. They know the exact points on a keystone to hit, now, to take it out in two shots. Time to shine, soldier.
Come help them tangle up a poison whip on their impervious metal arm to unbalance a larger demon, or hamstring a regular demon and kick it aside, or punch a life-stealer through the chest, so they can get closer to the gate, and then finally inside. Teleports welcome.
III. Keystone Targeting - Pre-Determined CR
Then they're through, and they've got a team. They've got a goddamn team and it's wonderful. Soldat surveys the area even while ducking a strike from one of the demons on the other side, absentmindedly grabbing its throat and throwing it away, steadfastly ignoring the feel of the realm's drain starting up. It's much less for them than most, it's fine. Taking stock of the threats takes just a quick look around, and finding the best position even less time. They're trained extensively for this.
"I need to get there." They point to a central point where they can shoot out at least two of the multiple keystones, maybe three, to start with. "Cover me."
III
"It won't be subtle though, if we teleport."

He is the aspect of destruction, though, so pointing him in the right direction is a pretty effective way to clear a path. Especially in his Resurrección form. He's all claws and teeth and ears that would be comical if he weren't currently ripping a demon's face off. When the demon drops to the ground a few seconds later, he takes a moment to rest, gaze skating across the crowd before dropping to Soldat.
The guy with the cat toys. He flashes a big, toothy grin. "Wouldn't have pegged you as someone who can fight," the words are half taunt, half challenge.

III-cont (cw: character death)
It's been a hard fight, and Soldat hasn't come through unscathed: they're bleeding from a few cuts about the face and legs, though their torso and right arm are still whole enough, thanks to the armored tactical vest. Their back aches from the stress of using the metal arm so much, and they're panting, exhausted-- the light from their lantern is hidden behind metal shutters, but inside it's flaring and dimming, their extended fight and stay in the demon realm this time taking its toll. But they're almost done. Almost done.
Shooting from inside the ring of stones isn't going to get them access to the big one, in the center. The angle is all wrong. They roll aside, out of the way of an attack, and fire their pistol point-blank into the demon's throat, ducking again to grab their rifle and sling it over one shoulder. "I need moved outside the ring!" they call, aiming for the attention of one of the teleporters in the team.
But there's no time. The demons, aware things are going badly for them both outside and in here and alerted to Soldat by the shout, mass up for one last push, swarming past any defenders and over Soldat's position.

In the City (orange teeaaaam)
The latest stone is tilted off-kilter, the wall cracked and crumbling from where, at some point in the battle, it'd taken a hit. Someone is already righting it, and Ken almost exhales in relief - but then he sees the wall between that person's feet give way. The stone isn't in danger, but its rescuer -
"Look out!"
Heeeeeeere's Ken, dashing directly onto a surface he knows is unstable so he can push someone else to safety. "KEN-CHAN!" Wormmon shrieks, bouncing forward - but will he be in time??
He can't watch Ken-chan get hurt saving somebody else AGAIN!!!
no subject
The skateboard barrels across the ground as Conan takes advantage of every trick he knows to increase the speed. He finally reaches Ken and throws himself forward, aiming to hit both him and the other person with just enough momentum to throw all three of them clear of the crumbling floor.

He's dizzy with the thought and the sense of death in their air that is stronger with every moment. But he has a job to do and he is determined to be at least useful here. Even if he cannot help in any other way.
He can adjust stones. That is until the wall starts giving way. His eyes widen and his body twists as...
A warning shout. A familiar child and an even more familiar bug! As the wall crumbles further and Wormmon bounces forward so does Taiki.
Or rather he soars, where there was once a nervous young man is now a black horned creature, aiming to save Ken.
"Grab my mane."

( closed. ) purple camp ; before the final demon invasion.
But he ignores whatever gut feeling comes with the territory of holding the line. For he is in no position to question whatever shade of luck they gathered after a whole week of trying to keep the city safe. Horde after horde, tired even after snatching moments of rest; Erda poses one of the hardest missions Roland's ever had to come across in both lifetimes. The skirmishes of Evermore were never this gruesome. They lasted a day or two before Evan managed to break enemy formation. And where was Roland during the war that broke out between the four nations of the realm and the army of the undead, summoned by the stolen souls from Doloran's cusp? On top of Lofty, a massive dragon riding into the belly of the beast. No, he can't even credit that war to himself; merely the strategist, pulling together tactics but not quite rushing to the charge. His stamina was not meant for this kind of conflict; he is not a man built for war and he does not want to be one if he can help it.
But that is not the role granted him in this iteration of life, it seems. Indeed, Roland plays the part well, darting worries and concerns expertly in favor of doing the job. The job comes first, and it always will. The job will send them all home. The job will save the innocent, the final people of a dying world. The job that will protect his teammates. The job that will defeat impending doom. The job -
- the job that was fit for warriors and kings and he is no longer one or the other, not anymore. He is but a man, stumbling through camp now with the worst of the worst behind him, though there is more pain yet to come. He manages to gait like nothing is wrong, ignoring glances sent his way, focusing all his remaining strength in trudging through the closest tent possible. Hair down, can't be bothered to tie up after it was so thoroughly whipped, cut and jagged from the back with strands sticking up unevenly. Clothes in tatters, cuts and bruises peppering his body where it can and can't be seen.
It's the drips of blood and toxin that give it away. A larger gash cut open against the skin of his shoulder all the way down his chest, ending by his ribs, barely patched up with salve that's not potent enough to stop demonic poison seeping into his bloodstream. When he is able to part the tent flaps, there is no more facade to show. The strength has all but left him, breaths no longer enough to sustain him defeated and weak.
He was cornered. Two giants, toying with him. And at first he had the upper hand, knowing what they could do to him, knowing what followed the snap of their weapons. He was going to go for a two-in-one kill. Then, it all came tumbling down. The Cat King's Claw, his favored weapon, broke at last, could not sustain the corrupting magic it already had to endure in his previous fight with a smaller demon. When he tried to escape quickly, the gun Senku patched up before disembarking failed him too; the mechanism snagging, the grappling hook stuck inside its barrel.
He would have actually died then, had it not been for Rannygazoo's final effort to save him, using up the last of Roland's magical stamina to summon its knight form, distracting the two for him to run away. The higgledy in question, was absent for now, not enough of Roland to summon it, not even in his heart. He lies asleep, in the abyss. When he tried to take supplies out of his Arms Band, it was of little use when his mind was so bogged up, he could no longer remember what was inside apart from Soreaway.
"Sorry, I'm just gonna - " He gurgles out, the flaps closing weakly behind him, covering him in shadow. His vision grows dim. He can only see motions now, no longer shapes or distinct faces. Just that he wants to sleep for a bit. Just a bit. Then he'll be back on his feet, as always.
As always.
"- take five..."
Roland collapses on the ground, face first, the golden hilt of his sword sliding lamely across battered soil.
no subject
But even as he's standing there right now, talking to Tidus, Inigo can see something from the corner of his eye. A figure moving that somehow immediately draws all of his attention, despite not even realising what he's watching right away. Like some instinct calls his gaze out towards the form.
And when he looks - really looks - and realises just who is stumbling through camp like that, and what kind of shape they're in, Inigo's heart completely freezes up. He stops mid-sentence in his conversation with the other teen, and he runs off towards the tent Roland disappeared in without saying anything more. Mostly since panic has taken over, but maybe a part of Inigo figures that Tidus will be following him anyway. That he most likely is having a similar reaction to this that Inigo has, a singular desire to go check it out as quickly as possible.
When he opens the tent and sees the collapsed form on the ground, Inigo immediately drops to his knees next to the man. His eyes go wide, and both of his hands reach out to find a piece of Roland's coat or skin that isn't ripped or an open wound, shaking the other. He's really trying to not do it too hard with Roland's current state, but it's hard to tell if Inigo can keep himself to that when panic has entirely overtaken him at this point.
"Roland--!" Inigo summons a potion forth out of his band, but then realises there's no way Roland could drink it in this state. Should he just pour it out on the wound? But the wound looks so big, and it's not like there's just blood surrounding it, he can see the poison the demons are using as well--
"Father!"

Caverns
That's not her scene, for now. She's precise and has a sixth sense, and not much else. It's just a matter of protecting...
Her sense is pinged, and she spots a scared and lost looking child. A quick glance doesn't immediately spot parents, and she walks up to the boy, holstering her gun and working up a smile. Think about ice skating with loved ones. Ice cream. Della's silly badge. So she smiles at the scared kid, who really isn't much younger than her in the grand scheme of things. "Hey. Are you looking for your parents?" He nods; and Ple Two holds out her hand. He takes it. Maybe he's more inclined to trust a kid just a bit bigger than himself. "It'll be alright. See? I'm not much older than you are, and I've been through this sort of thing more than once." And she's... not okay, not all the time, but she's standing here, and she's strong and smiling for him. "So we'll find your parents, and tell them that it's okay together."
It doesn't take long, even. His mother is a bit busy, however, keeping the father from breaking down, and giving up, and so Ple Two and the previously panicking child. Ple Two's seen people survive devastation, and even if she was one the wrong side of that once, her experience seems to have them back on their way...
And she stands there, feeling pretty good about herself. Now to worry about horrible, horrible demons.
no subject
This is cute. This is so cute to watch. Because Madoka spotted Ple Two and was honestly about to approach the other, but then she realised what exactly the other girl was busy doing, and that makes Madoka hold off for a few moments. Sure, she could help the other with the small child, but it feels like defeating the point when it looks like Ple Two is doing it so well by herself.
.. It's a far cry from what things were like when the other first showed up on the train, huh. Sure, Madoka has never doubted Ple Two's inner goodness (not even during that day where she reverted), but this display makes it more and more clear that the other is growing more into showing that goodness too. Even being gentle with kids.
So when Ple Two is standing there and basking in the nice feeling, she may suddenly feel two arms wrapping itself around her. Perhaps alarming for a second, but no longer than that, since Madoka begins to loudly and happily laugh.
"Ple Two! You did such a good job!"

Della Duck | Purple
Before the mission, Della went several nights without sleep to make the badges.
Then came the mission, which has has been non-stop fighting. Every day, almost every hour. Della's enthusiasm has waned, but her need to help people has not. And she's no robot or superhero, she's a mom in her late thirties, and there's only so much she can take. It even seems like the demons knew she'd be like this, targeting her to wear her out the past couple of days, because she simply couldn't stand back and rest while others fought. She couldn't even sleep that final night, as it was way too tense.
So when the final battle cries come up on that final day, Della trudges out, with bags under her eyes, shallow breathing, her body trembling... ]
All... all right! Let's do this thing! We can... Ducks don't... I...
[ With one more step, her eyes roll back, and she collapses on the ground.
Maybe get her to safety before the demon horde mows her down, please??? ]
no subject
Before he jumps into the fray, he goes to Della's side, erects a thin water barrier for protection, but he doesn't need long.
He scoops her up and uses a portal to get them away from the main conflict.
Demyx is hoping that going through the portal isn't going to be terrible for her and he uses his body to shield her, no matter how brief this little interlude with the darkness is. ]

[She holds up the scanner, screen out, showing points along the wall where magical channels are broken. Some good checking points for misaligned stones.]
So they've got a really fascinating runic system here, but this is what happens when you don't maintain your equipment. Magical or not.

She should rest, but with the tension and anxieties high coupled with the fact she doesn't need to sleep nearly as much as a mortal would, find her wandering around offering her aid.]

But even with the fight against the D-Reaper, there had been breaks. Times he and Guilmon could rest and spend time with their families and friends in between battles. Here... he couldn't remember they last time they had spent this long as Dukemon. The last few days had been spent constantly fighting, apart from a few short breaks in camp.
After the last fight, he and Guilmon had just managed to grab something to eat (Guilmon wasn't about to let him forget), before they'd stumbled over to their tent and collapses in a snoozing heap just outside it.]

Enemies don't just stop like that. This can only be a brief reprieve and they need to take advantage of it. Make sure everyone is as healed up as they can be, anything that can be replenished is.
Make sure everyone is fed and rested. Maybe she'll even remember to do that last one instead of just reminding other people.
Battle
There are people here that are heavy artillery. People who can take out siege engines and everything else that might come through the gate.
She is not those people.
On the other hand, it won't make much of a difference to take out the big targets if the rest of the demons overrun the city in the meantime. Still plenty of work to be done for ordinary mortals.
Ordinary, exhausted mortals. But that's always what you have to deal with. SHe's not giving up and she's encouraging the others to hold out too.
Camp
This mission was nothing like he'd experienced on the previous one, or anything else really.
He was a little off to the side as though he didn't know anyone, he kind of didn't, and he stuck out like an orange beacon in the group of mostly reds and purples. He was a prime candidate for pestering.

And there's not a lot to remedy that boredom here in camp. All there is to do is sit down, eat, and sleep.
.. and talk to other people, but that's exactly where the conflicting feelings come in. Alice sure doesn't want to sit here in silence and feel bored, but speaking up to people? It's such a two-edged sword. Especially when Alice's tolerance levels for people are so low.
But right now, as she's sitting down near a fire and watches an already present boy sitting there and eating too, Alice mostly just doesn't want to be bored.
So she sighs and speaks up.
"Do you think it's just going to be this the whole time? No matter how much we're fighting, it seems like we're making very little progress."
